Services will be held Saturday, April 18, at Slininger-Schroeder Funeral Home for Patsy Hastings, 93, of Jefferson. Interment will be at the Jefferson Municipal Cemetery.
Patsy Ann Young Hastings was born November 1, 1932, in Jefferson. She was the youngest of four children of James Hugh and Marie (Kelley) Young, growing up on farms in the Jefferson and Churdan areas.
Patsy started school a year early at age 4 because she would follow her siblings to school. She continued to run away to school daily until the teacher decided to just let her stay. She completed the 8th grade at country school, then attended Churdan High School, graduating with the class of 1949 at the age of 16.
Patsy started working at the Jefferson Creamery as a bookkeeper. While working at the Creamery she met her future husband, Ken Hastings, when he applied for a job. Their first date was to the St. Patrick’s Day dance. Less than a year later they were married and created the farming partnership that lasted 71 years until Ken’s death in 2021.
Patsy was very active in community affairs at the township level, the county level, the state level, and the national level. She was a “Pink Lady” volunteer with the local hospital auxiliary for 40 years, was active in the Rural Electric Cooperative Women of Iowa for 24 years, serving as secretary, vice president and president, and was an election official and poll worker for 46 years. She was also a Governor-appointed member of four state boards – Real Estate Appraiser, Chiropractic Examiners, Speech Pathology and Audiology, and Podiatry Examiners, serving more than 21 years, as well as being on the Upland Game Birds Commission.
Patsy is preceded in death by her parents, Hugh and Marie Young; husband Ken Hastings; and siblings Virginia Vernon, Duane Young and Joan LeGore. She is survived by children Steve (Mary) Hastings of Colorado Springs, CO, Joyce (Mick) Rings of Columbus, OH, and Vicki (Dan) Taylor of Jefferson, as well as six grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren, also sister-in-law Kay Renwanz of Scranton, brother-in-law Chuck (Dina) Hastings of Grimes, and many nieces, nephews and friends.
