The Jefferson Garden Club will offer a free program on beekeeping presented by Adam Dolezal, Iowa State University post doctoral research associate. Also sharing his knowledge of raising bees will be John Brunow of Jefferson.
The program is planned for Thursday, April 10, at 6:30 pm at Trinity Lutheran Church in Jefferson. The program is open to the public.
Dolezal received an undergraduate degree in biology from the University of Illinois followed by a Ph.D. from Arizona State University. He’s currently a researcher at Iowa State University studying honeybee viruses and nutritional stress. He has been working with bees for eight years.
Dolezal will present information on the types of bees found in Iowa and explain the basics of their biology. In addition he will summarize some of the problems facing bees, including Colony Collapse Disorder.
Brunow is a local business owner who enjoys beekeeping as a hobby. While living in Virginia, he kept bees in his back yard. Last year he had hives along the Raccoon River Valley Trail. Brunow will talk about his apian experiences.
The public is welcome to attend meetings of the Garden Club. Club activities include caring for the Memorial Gardens on East Lincoln Way and presenting “Yard of the Month” awards to property owners whose efforts to beautify their space may inspire others to do the same and make Jefferson a pleasant place to live.
