Charges filed in Sept. 14 fatal accident

Charges have been filed in Greene County related to a traffic accident in Boone County Sept. 14 in which Aaron Beaman, 20, of Jefferson was killed.

A Jefferson police officer assisted the Boone County sheriff’s office and the Iowa State Patrol with the investigation.

The JPD reported Oct. 4 that Larry Lee-Warren Varnell, 21, of Churdan has been charged with providing alcohol to underage person – serious misdemeanor, driving while license barred – aggravated misdemeanor, and failure to file SR 22 insurance and open container of alcohol in a vehicle, both simple misdemeanors*.

(Oct. 9 update) — According to information filed in Greene County district court, the charges are based on a signed statement by another under age friend who was with them that day. The friend told investigators the three of them drove around Greene County from 3 to about 9 pm on Oct. 13, and that Beaman and Varnell both drove their own pickup trucks that day.  Varnell is charged in Greene County with providing alcohol to the witness friend and other charges listed. He is charged in Boone County with providing alcohol to a person under age resulting in death, relating to Beaman’s death.

Note: All charges are merely an accusation. All defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
