The Greene County boys soccer team picked up two wins last week, with Gesser Gutierres leading not only the Rams in goals, but the entire state.

Last Tuesday, the Rams hosted Boone, taking the game 11-1 after the 10-goal rule came into play, ending the match early. The Rams made eight goals in the first half with three in the second, allowing the Toreadors just one goal, made in the first half.

“There’s still lots to clean up but boys played well in slick conditions,” said coach Carl Behne. “Communication was solid and the back line was better talking to each other and stepping to the ball. Very proud of the improvement.”

Gesser Gutierres kicked eight goals from nine shots on the goal. Nathan Behne was credited with three assists and two goals, with goalie Gabe Ebersole saving four goals, with one goal made against him.

Team stats: Assists 9; Goals 11; Points 31; Shots 19; Shots on goal 17; Corner kicks 3; Saves 4.

Friday’s game brought a 5-1 Ram win on the Carroll Tigers’ home field, with Greene County scoring three in the first half and two in the second. Gutierres had three goals from four shots on goal, Behne adding two goals and one assist, with Ebersole credited with another four saves.

“A bit more of a football game than a soccer match, but we came out with a solid win and only a few banged up guys,” noted coach Behne. “The match scoring started with a great volley from Nathan off a ricochet from a corner and loose ball. Followed up with a goal from Gesser and then another.  3-0 at halftime.

“Second half brought another goal by Nathan off a free kick from about six yards outside the box. And then a great exclamation point by Gesser to end the Ram scoring,” added Behne. A questionable call for a handball in the box gave Carroll a PK late for their only goal.

“Four saves by Gabe and a solid defensive effort by the whole team. It was awesome to have Cody Allen back from knee surgery. He played a great match and had a great goal saving move late in the second.

“I’m proud of the boys as we prepare for back to back matches to start the week,” concluded Behne.

Team stats: Assists 2; Goals 5; Shots 11; Shots on Goal 9; Corner kicks 8; Saves 4.
