Police blotter – April 2022

Following are excerpts of activity reported by the Jefferson police department:

Saturday, April 30: At 3:19 pm staff at Regency Park reported a possible elder abuse occurring there. The Department of Inspections and Appeals will conduct the investigation into the reported matter. At 7:29 pm a resident caught a stray dog in the 300 block of Edgewood Ave. The officer placed the dog in the animal holding facility.

Friday, April 29: At 6:04 pm a resident turned in a cell phone he had found near N. Olive and E. Washington Sts. The phone was placed in Lost & Found.

Thursday, April 28: At 8:46 am a complainant reported a neighbor’s cats defecating in her flower beds in the 300 block of N. Chestnut St. The officer is attempting to speak with the neighbor about the issue and have the cats recognized as a TNR colony, per ordinance. At 9:47 am an officer was advised that the strong odor of marijuana was coming from a residence in the 400 block of W. Sunset Rd. The officer spoke to the property owner, who signed a consent to search form. During the search, officers located small amount of suspected marijuana and seized the item. The officer is following up on the investigation. At 8:08 pm an officer investigated a single vehicle accident at the intersection of W. Elm St and Lincoln Way. Grace Hardaway of Jefferson was northbound on Elm stopped at intersection. She attempted to turn left onto Lincoln Way but took the turn too wide and struck a street sign. Hardaway was cited for failure to maintain control. Damage to the vehicle she was driving, a 2015 Ford Fusion owned by Daniel Hardaway of Jefferson, was estimated at $2,000. Damage to the street sign was estimated at $600.

Wednesday, April 27: At 5:06 pm a complainant reported his juvenile son was being bullied at school. The officer is investigating and working with the school on the issue. At 5:30 pm the Jefferson PD participated in a county-wide disaster drill at Landus Cooperative. At 11:52 pm an officer investigated an accident in the 500 block of N. Chestnut St. Trent Ganoe of Odgen was driving a 2003 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck owned by Linda Gustoff of Scranton. He was pulling a trailer southbound. As he attempted to pull into a private drive, he struck a parked 2015 Chevrolet Impala owned by Jolene Anderson of Jefferson. Damage to Anderson’s vehicle was estimated at $3,000. Damage to the trailer was estimated at $1,000.

Tuesday, April 26: At 3:15 pm an officer received a report of a possible sex abuse occurring in Jefferson. The officer is investigating. At 7:32 pm a complainant reported a cat in a tree for several hours. The officer was able to use her ladder to retrieve the cat.

Monday, April 25: At 4:40 pm staff at Greene County Medical Center ER reported a dog bite patient there. The officer learned a juvenile was petting a neighbor’s dog at a residence in the 1000 block of W. Wall St when the animal bit the child on the side of the head. The dog was placed in a 10-day quarantine at the owner’s residence and per city ordinance, was deemed as an “illegal animal.” The dog cannot reside in the city limits after the quarantine period ends. At 4:58 pm officers were advised of an intoxicated female attempting to drive away from Wild Rose Casino. The officers made contact with the female and the investigation led to the arrest of Sarah Dawn Schwery, 45, of Jefferson for public intoxication (simple misdemeanor)*.  At 9:08 pm a caller advised of a driver doing burnouts in the parking lot at Greene County Middle School. The officer could not determine who was involved but spoke to a group of juveniles who were present. At 10:19 pm an officer performed a traffic stop on the driver of a vehicle that had a registration plate obstruction. The officer located a juvenile passenger who had left a court ordered treatment facility. A deputy was contacted to transport the juvenile. The officer located two handguns under the seat of the vehicle and spoke to the driver about them. The guns were not listed as stolen on a NCIC check.

Sunday, April 24: At 12:15 am an officer responded to a car-deer accident near S. Elm and 250th St. Gordon Kambel of West Des Moines truck a deer with his 2018 Volkswagen Jetta. Damage to the vehicle was estimated at $1,500.

Saturday, April 23: At 6:03 pma complainant reported her juvenile son had walked away from her residence in the 600 block of W. Adams St and she could not locate him. The officers began searching for the youth. He was later located and transported by a deputy back to custody of DHS.

Friday, April 22: At 12:21 am an officer spotted a female at Sparky’s for whom he knew there was a court order to take her into custody to be evaluated by a medical doctor. The officer detained the subject until a deputy arrived and transported her to ER. At 4:17 pm staff at Greene County Medical Center reported a committal patient had walked away from the facility. The officer did not locate the subject. At 5:10 pm officers attempted to catch and remove a snake from a residence in the 900 block of W. State St but were not successful. At 9:32 pm a complainant reported criminal mischief to her vehicle while it was parked at Greene County Middle School. The officer is investigating.

Thursday, April 21: At 10:26 am a complainant requested officers at a residence in the 300 block of N. Wilson Ave for a domestic assault occurring there. The officer’s investigation led to the arrest of Katherine Elizabeth Wells, 33, of Jefferson for domestic abuse assault/injury (serious misdemeanor)*. At 6:12 pm a complainant reported possible fraudulent charges on his credit card. The officer is investigating.

Wednesday, April 20: At 8:53 am a complainant reported a male attempting to get into his residence in the 500 block of W. State St. The complainant reported the male was screaming and covered in blood. Officers located the subject in the area and learned he had been assaulted and shot at inside a residence in the 600 block of W. Lincoln Way. The male was taken to ER by the Greene County Ambulance. Officers are investigating. At 9:11 pm a caller advised of drivers doing burn outs in the parking lot at Greene County Middle School. The officer located a few vehicles in the area and spoke to the young drivers about the issue.

Tuesday, April 19: At 12:11 pm a complainant reported the theft of a rifle from the 1200 block of S. Mulberry Street. The officer has a suspect and is investigating the report.

Monday, April 18: At 12:21 pm a complainant reported criminal mischief to his vehicle while parked in the 300 block of E. State St. A large rock had been thrown through the window on a 1996 Ford Ranger. The complainant provided the officer with a possible suspect in the matter. The officer is investigating. At 3:18 pm a complainant reported an abandoned bicycle in a yard in the 600 block of N. Locust St. The officer placed the bike in the impound lot. At 3:22 pm a complainant reported a stray dog in the 200 block of S. Cedar St. The officer caught the stray and placed it in the animal holding facility. At 4:21 pm the Audubon PD requested any information from Jefferson officers concerning any missing tombstones. The Audubon department had located a tombstone there and wanted to find where it originated. Officers checked Jefferson cemeteries but did not see anything suspicious.

Sunday, April 17: At 8:20 pm at Wild Rose Casinoan officer arrested Conar Allen Hornsby, 25, of Grand Junction on an outstanding Greene County warrant for probation violation*. A search of Hornsby’s person located a marijuana smoking device. The officer also charged Hornsby with possession of drug paraphernalia (simple misdemeanor)*. At 9:23 pm an officer responded to a car-deer accident at S. Elm and W. Russell Sts. Samantha Lehnhoff of Jefferson struck a deer with her 2014 Ford Explorer. Damage to the vehicle was estimated at $2,000.

Saturday, April 16: At 8:19 pm an officer spotted a driver whose license he knew was barred in the parking lot at Wild Rose Casino. The officer spoke to the subject and the officer’s investigation led to the arrest of Mitchell Kenneth Venteicher, 37, of Jefferson for driving while license barred (aggravated misdemeanor)*.

Friday, April 15: At 2:42 pm an officer began an investigation into a possible assault and criminal mischief to a vehicle which had occurred at Greene County High School.

Thursday, April 14: At 2:26 pm Kayla Promes reported she had parked at HyVee. When she opened the door of her 2017 Chevrolet Equinox, the extreme wind threw it open, striking a 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee parked next to it. Damage to the Jeep, which is owned by Mary Ann Wright of Panora, was estimated at $1,500. Promes’s vehicle was not damaged. At 3:48 pm a resident reported a tree had fallen at Russell Park due to high winds. At 6 pm a resident reported a downed power line in the 600 block of S. Maple St. Alliant Energy was contacted to make repairs.

Wednesday, April 13: At 10:39 am staff at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll requested a welfare check on a male subject. The officers made contact with the subject and coaxed him to ER to be evaluated. At 3:19 pm a complainant reported an incident had occurred during a child exchange at Greene County Elementary School. The officer is investigating. At 7:27 pm a caller advised of a male who appeared to be intoxicated stumbling around a vehicle in the 300 block of W. Reed St. The officer’s investigation led to the arrest of Sirjohn Daniels Wilder, 37, of Jefferson for public intoxication (simple misdemeanor)*.  

Tuesday, April 12: At 8:15 am a complainant reported he was walking his dog in the 400 block of N. Chestnut St when a German shepherd approached him in a vicious manner. He advised officers of where he believed the owner lives. The officer went to that address and spoke to the subjects. They advised they had found the dog running loose in Boone County and brought the animal home several weeks ago. They advised the animal is very aggressive towards people and they did not wish to keep it any longer. As they were speaking the animal aggressively came at the officer and attempted to bite her. The owner was able to get the dog in the back seat of the patrol vehicle. The officer and chief took the animal to the vet and had the extremely aggressive dog euthanized. At 8:14 pm officers assisted family members with a subject with dementia who thought her car had been stolen. A family member returned home with the vehicle shortly after the officer arrived there. At 7:25 pm a complainant reported a driver was passing vehicles in an unsafe manner on Highway 4 heading toward Jefferson. She reported she was forced off the road by the driver. A deputy located the driver north of Jefferson and performed a traffic stop. At 7:12 pm an officer attempted to capture a snake in a yard in the 100 block of N. Grimmell Rd. The officer was not successful. At 9:19 pm security staff at Wild Rose Casino requested officers as a patron had assaulted a casino pit boss. The officer’s investigation led to the arrest of Oliver W. Peyton, 49, of Newark, NJ, for assault- serious, disorderly conduct and public intoxication*.

Monday, April 11: At 7:18 am a complainant reported a small puppy had come into his yard in the 206 S. West St. The officer took control of the puppy and was able to determine an owner through social media. The officer returned the puppy to the owner, with a verbal warning for animal at large. At 9:09 pm a caller advised of juveniles doing burnouts with their vehicle in the parking lot at Greene County Middle School. The officer located a group standing by a vehicle and spoke to them. He learned the subject responsible had left the area before his arrival.

Sunday, April 10: At 9:27 am an officer responded to an area behind Super 8 in regard to a subject who appeared to be deceased in a parked vehicle. An officer, along with a deputy, Greene County Ambulance and the medical examiner subsequently determined the subject had suffered a suspected self-inflicted gunshot wound and was pronounced deceased. At 7:40 pm staff at Greene County Medical Center requested an officer assist with an unruly patient who had left the hospital but needed to return. An officer responded and provided assistance.

Saturday, April 9: At 12:42 pm an anonymous caller advised an officer of suspicious activity at a residence in the 200 block of N. Maple St. The officer collected information for further investigation.

Friday, April 8: At 10:31 pm an officer was called to Greene County High School in regard to a student possibly giving another student an edible marijuana product. The situation remains under investigation. At 4:46 pm an Iowa Department of Corrections probation officer requested an officer perform a breath test on an individual on probation. The officer located the subject and administered the test. At 10:46 pm a resident approached an officer in the 500 block of Lincoln Way and gave him a dog that had been running at large. The dog was taken to the animal holding facility.

Thursday, April 7: At 1:27 am Ryan Murphy reported a trespasser that would not leave a residence in the 200 block of N. Locust St. The officer arrived in the area and located a male in the street. The male advised that Murphy had struck him numerous times with a ball bat. The subject had the bat and gave it to the officer. The officer met with Murphy and learned the subject was attempting to take a generator from a shed when Murphy came into contact with him. The officer’s investigation led to the arrest of Ryan Joseph Murphy, 41, of Jefferson for willful injury/causing bodily injury (Class D felony)*. Murphy was also arrested on an outstanding Greene County warrant for probation violation*. The victim was transported to ER by Greene County Ambulance. At 12:38 pm a complainant reported a sick raccoon in the 500 block of N. Oak St. Officers dispatched the animal and removed it from the area. At 7:07 pm staff at Casey’s reported video showed two males had stolen a bottle of alcohol. The officer is investigating.

Wednesday, April 6: At 9:27 am officers arrested Kimberly Ann Conner, 62, of Jefferson on an outstanding Jefferson PD arrest warrant for dependent adult abuse – exploitation (Class D felony)*.The charge stems from an investigation that began on 03/14. The officer worked in cooperation with DHS on the investigation. At 1:29 pm a complainant reported a burglary at a residence in the 500 block of N. Olive St. The incident had occurred while she was gone on vacation for several days. The officer is investigating. At 4:55 pm staff at St Joseph parish center reported a child’s bike had been there for a few days. The officer placed the boke in the impound lot.

Tuesday, April 5: At 11:56 am staff at Regency Park reported an investigation into possible abuse of a resident there. The officer will assist the Iowa Department of Inspections and Appeals Office with the investigation into the alleged event.

Monday, April 4: At 8:40 am staff at Dollar General reported finding “prop money” in the daily money from closing. The officer took the $20 bill and is investigating. At 10:08 pm officers arrested a male in the 700 block of N. Cedar St on an outstanding Story County warrant for failure to appear. At 1:57 pm a complainant advised she caught a stray dog and had it in the 700 block of W. Harrison St. The officers placed the dog in the animal holding facility.

Sunday, April 3: At 2:22 pm the sheriff reported to an officer he had just witnessed the driver of a red pickup truck tearing up the gravel road and driving carelessly in the 1500 block of 222nd St. The officers and sheriff located the vehicle at a residence in the 400 block of E. Lincoln Way and spoke to the driver. Kurtis James Bednarik of Jefferson was cited by the officer for careless driving.

Saturday, April 2: At 8:41 am a complainant reported a raccoon in the 100 block of W. Vest St that appeared to be sick. The officers located the animal, dispatched it, and removed it from the area. At 1:49 pm a complainant reported a possible violation of a no contact order between a Jefferson couple. The officer is investigating the report. At 5:33 pm the Suicide Prevention Hotline advised of a call from an individual who advised he had taken several pills. The officer made contact with the subject and Greene County Ambulance was requested at that location. The ambulance transported the subject to ER for a medical evaluation.

Friday, April 1: At 9:10 am Brianne Ball reported a rear end collision at the intersection of N. Grimmell Rd and W. Central Ave she was involved in the previous day at about 10 am.  She was westbound on W. Central Ave driving a 2007 Ford Escape owned by Teresa Ball of Jefferson. A driver ahead of her stopped at the posted stop sign at Grimmell Rd. Ball stopped behind that vehicle and her vehicle was struck from behind by a 2010 Chevrolet Equinox driven by Meadow Losee and owned by Matthew Losee of Paton. Losee was cited for fail to stop in assured clear distance ahead. Damage to the vehicles was estimated at $1,000 each. At 11:31 am officers were assisted by Greene County sheriff’s deputies and the Guthrie County sheriff’s canine deputy in executing a narcotics search warrant at 205 N. Locust St. Items were seized from the residence related to narcotics and paraphernalia. Charges are pending at this time. At 3:52 pm a complainant reported a juvenile near the middle school attempting to get a ride from motorists. The officer arrived and learned a teacher was now with the student and arranging a ride home for him. At 4:02 pm a complainant reported two stray dogs in the 300 block of E. Madison St trying to attack her dog. The officer arrived as the owner of the two dogs arrived to get them. The officer issued a verbal warning to the owner for dog at large prohibited. At 9:15 pm officers performed a traffic stop with a driver near Highway 30 and N. Elm St because the vehicle had a third brake light out and a broken tail light lens. During the stop, officers noticed bottles of alcohol in the back seat of the vehicle. During a consent search, officers located four bottles of hard alcohol in the vehicle. Four underage subjects were taken to the LEC. Benjamin Kenneth Johnston, 18, of Grand Junction and Tegan Daniel Lowe, 18, of Jefferson were both cited for possession of alcohol under age and released. Kegan Evan Shield, 16, of Templeton and Kyra Marie Brinks of Carroll were released to parents and charges of possession of alcohol under legal age were sent to juvenile court.  All subjects had PBT results of .000%, as they were in constructive possession but had not yet begun to drink. At 11:14 pm an officer performed a traffic stop at N. Elm and W. Central Ave with the driver of a vehicle with a brake light out. During the stop, officers saw a box of alcoholic beverages in the vehicle. During a probable cause search of the vehicle, officers located marijuana wax and a smoking device. The driver and two passengers were taken to the LEC. The officer cited Joseph Douglas Patterson, 19, and Ethan Michael Hueser, 19, both of Jefferson, and Matthew Richard Naberhaus, 19, of Scranton, for possession of alcohol under legal age. Hueser was operating the vehicle, and had a Data Master result of .039%BAC. He was given an “.O2 violation,” which is an administrative action, not a criminal charge.
