Local groups represented at tourism workshop

A contingent from Greene County attended the Guide Training and Certification program at the Central Iowa Expo administration building on Thursday, April 11. The workshop was an opportunity to learn methods to allow visitors to have a more memorable experience, as well as to network with 100 other persons representing various tourist opportunities from across the state of Iowa.

Sponsorship included Travel Iowa, Ames Convention and Visitors Bureau, Boone County Convention Bureau, and Iowa State University Extension.

Workshop attendees were (from left) Lisa Kuehl of Greene County Chamber and Tourism, Pat Richards and Joyce Kurth of the Mahanay Memorial Carillon Tower, Beth Vander Wilt of Thomas Jefferson Gardens and the Chamber, Ginny Showman (hidden) and Mary Weaver of Thomas Jefferson Gardens.

Several take away thoughts, that will lead to action, included this information regarding the art of interpretation: ” We teach, but we are not teachers. We entertain, but we are not entertainers. We translate facts into meaning. We transform information into a memorable experience”.

The program will be repeated June 13, in Mason City.
