New Heart of Iowa HabiTour promotes cycling fun

Organizers of the inaugural Heart of Iowa HabiTour are mixing one part exercise with two parts fun and a pinch of great support as they plan a new fundraising event by Heart of Iowa Habitat for Humanity.

With route length choices of 30, 50 or 100 miles ridden entirely on the safe and gently rolling Raccoon River Valley Trail, the Heart of Iowa HabiTour will start and end in Jefferson on Saturday, Aug. 26.

Bicyclists will be fully supported with well-stocked rest stops, along with full SAG (support and gear) services, including rides to the end point should they or their bike be unable to go the full distance. Even refreshing post-ride showers are provided. Multiple overnight accommodation choices are available, should out-of-town riders come early or stay late.

A post-ride celebration featuring a full barbecue dinner from Smokin’ Big Dawgs BBQ, plus live music from JD and the Swensongs of Boone, will cap off the day. The Greene County Fair board will serve domestic and craft beers, plus other refreshments. The public is invited and encouraged to join this celebration party, including barbeque dinner for only $10, at Clover Hall on the Greene County Fairgrounds adjacent to the Raccoon River Valley trailhead in Jefferson.

Riders on the HabiTour are required to raise a minimum of $150 in sponsorships on behalf of Habitat for Humanity to participate. These dollars will be used by volunteers across Boone, Greene and Guthrie Counties to assist low-income families attain opportunities for safe, decent and affordable housing. One new home is under construction in Madrid this summer, while 10 additional critical home repair projects are scheduled or under way in communities across Greene and Guthrie Counties.
