A full evening is being planned for the third annual Community Christmas Tree Lighting, sponsored by Jefferson Matters: Main Street Thursday, Dec. 3, beginning at 5:30 pm in the Greene County courthouse.
Families young and old are invited to help Santa count down and flip the switch to light up the community tree. Sugar Plum fairies will dance, a special guest will read the classic story “‘Twas the Night Before Christmas,” and the First United Methodist bell choir will help ring in the holidays.
The first 200 in the courthouse door will receive a coupon for a traditional Christmas cookie from Homestead Bakery, and the first 100 children will receive a free glow stick to help light up the night.
The Relay for Life committee will again have its luminary Remembrance Tree in the courthouse, along with some special luminaries that will be inside the courthouse, adding to the festivities.
Immediately after the tree lighting, the Thomas Jefferson Gardens board of directors invites everyone to come to the gardens for more old-fashioned Christmas fun. They will have a “tag the tree” event. Persons can pick up a tag at the courthouse that evening, write a wish on it, and take it to the Thomas Jefferson Gardens and “tag” their tree. The tags will then be entered into a drawing and one lucky person will receive $50 in Chamber Bucks.
There will be Victorian carolers in the gardens and a sleigh for people to snap class Christmas pictures in.
The BPO Does will serve a soup supper for a free will offering from 4;30 to 7 pm at the Elks lodge.
There will be free admission to the Mahanay Memorial Carillon Tower from 5:30 to 7 pm for Christmas light viewing and more visits with Santa.
“So mark your calendars to bring all of the family for the traditional Community Christmas Tree Lighting and join in all the fun of the evening as we ring in the holidays in the Jefferson Main Street district,” a Jefferson Matters spokesperson said.
