New school year starts Wednesday, Aug. 20

Back to school 2Summer vacation comes to an end next Wednesday for students all over Greene County.

Greene County elementary students will see more changes than the older students. All students in grades K-3 will attend school at the elementary on E. Russell St in Jefferson, a change in location and routine for students in the former East Greene district. Students in grades 4-6 will all attend school in Grand Junction at Greene County intermediate school.

Students won’t be the only ones in new settings. Because of the realignment of grades, and to meet handicap accessibility requirements for a student at the intermediate school, many teachers have changed buildings or moved to a new classroom in their familiar building.

The only new teacher at the elementary/intermediate level is sixth grade teacher Heather Manken.

Middle school (grades 7-8) students will welcome four new teachers: Ryan Eberly in physical education, Abigail Gerzema in language arts, Christine Krohn in special education, and Hanna Sundberg in instrumental and vocal music.

New teachers at Greene County High School are Deborah Boldt and Kelly Olson in special education, Heather Moody in math and the alternative school, and Heath Telleen in social studies.

Many teachers will be serving in new or additional roles with the implementation of the state-funded Teacher Leadership and Compensation program. For information on those teachers, read the May 7 GreeneCountyNewsOnline post here: TLC

Parent meetings are scheduled in all the Greene County buildings prior to the start of school. The first is a parent orientation at the intermediate school today (Wednesday) from 4:30 to 5:30 pm or from 6:30 to 7:30 pm. A “meet-and-greet” is planned at the intermediate school Monday, Aug. 18, from 4 to 6:30 pm.

Students new to the elementary school and their parents are encouraged to attend a new student orientation at the elementary school next Monday at 6 pm. “Back to School Night” at the elementary is slated for Tuesday, Aug. 19, from 6 to 7:30 pm. Parent Nights are at 7 pm as follows: third grade, Monday, Aug. 25; second grade, Tuesday, Aug. 26; and first grade, Thursday, Aug. 28.

Middle school students and their parents are encouraged to attend an open house Monday from 4 to 6:30 pm at the school.

High school seniors and their parents are asked to attend a meeting Monday, Aug. 18, at 6:30 pm at the high school. There will be a meeting and 1:1 laptop orientation for new students and freshmen, and their parents, Tuesday, Aug. 19, at 6:30 pm.

Greene County students in transitional kindergarten and kindergarten don’t start school Aug. 20. Their first day of school is Friday, Aug. 22. Pre-kindergarten and Head Start students’ first day is Monday, Aug. 25.
