County budget amended with increase for jail inmate expenses

Higher than expected expenditures, particularly inmate expenses at the jail, are causing the county board of supervisors to amend the current year budget, adding $17,000 to total expenditures.

County auditor Jane Heun explained the amended budget to the supervisors at their regular meeting Monday morning. Heun added $36,000 to the line item for public safety and legal services, increasing it to $1,519,485. Sheriff Steve Haupert said 90 percent of the increase is due to increased inmate expenses. “I’ve never seen inmate expenses so high,” Heun said.

The smaller portion of the increased expense was for modifications to the vehicle chief deputy Jack Williams drives to accommodate the K-9 Leo.

Heun offset part of the increase in public safety expense with a $30,000 decrease in the line item for physical health and social services. She said that change was because of the timing of flow-through grant funds.

The amended budget adds $5,000 to the county environment and education line item and $6,000 for government services because of special elections held this year.

The board of supervisors will hold a public hearing to amend the budget Tuesday, May 27, at 9 am. The public notice is posted here: http://greenecountynewsonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/County-budget-amendment-FY-13-14.pdf
