Charlotte Ann Dagit, the daughter of C. Dean Smalley and Marjorie (Hess) Smalley, was born Nov. 13, 1941.

Charlotte attended school in the Dana and Grand Junction area. She graduated from the Paton Consolidated School in 1959. She was a member of the Salem United Methodist Church in Paton and enjoyed her weekly Bible study group.

On April 8, 1961, exactly one year after their engagement, Charlotte was united in marriage to Raymond C. Dagit. They were the parents of four children: Rachelle Ann, Rebecca Renae, Roberta Rae, and Richard Raymond. They lived an enjoyable country life in the Dana and Paton area. Charlotte’s priority was that of wife, mom, grandma, and-great grandma. She later worked as typesetter at the Jefferson Bee and Herald for more than 30 years prior to her retirement.

Ray and Charlotte had a passion for dancing. They would Waltz, 2-step, and Polka at the Bohemian Hall near Fort Dodge. They would also get dressed up for a night of square dancing with the Town and Country Twirlers at the Gowrie skating rink. Charlotte felt so fortunate that they raised their family within a 2-mile radius of her parents and siblings’ families. It was common to see everyone at church, school, and community events, birthday parties and holidays, even fishing vacations in Minnesota.

Charlotte enjoyed cooking, gardening, and sewing. A typical Sunday afternoon may have her baking fresh chocolate chip cookies that Richard couldn’t wait to get his hands on, while listening to her daughters practice their music lessons. The Smalley family reunions grew to be a highlight of hers every year. She will be remembered for her chocolate scotcheroos (with sprinkles), her generous hugs, sweet smile and love and compassion for all.

The family has peace in knowing she felt so blessed by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Yet, we were blessed in return to have her and her prayers for every one of us as a testimony of her gracious and unwavering faith.

Charlotte passed away peacefully, with her family by her side, on Dec. 23, 2025, under hospice care at the Greene County Medical Center in Jefferson. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers-in-law Jerry Hillman, Eugene Muir, and Lloyd Dagit; sister-in-law Wilma Hillman; daughter Bobbi Thompson; and sons-in-law Dean Thompson and Mark Sullivan.
