Janelle Lynn Wilson, a beacon of laughter and courage, passed away March 16, 2025, after a valiant battle with breast cancer. Born on October 3, 1955, in Hampton, Janelle’s vibrant spirit and loving nature left an indelible mark on the hearts of those she encountered throughout her 69 years of life. She departed from this world in Des Moines, surrounded by the love of her family and the warmth of memories shared.
Janelle was the cherished wife and soulmate of David Wilson, with whom she shared a lifetime of love, laughter and companionship. They met at the age of 15, in their hometown of Hampton, and never looked back. A true love story that the foundation of the Wilson family was built upon. Together, they raised a family that was the center of Janelle’s world. She was a devoted mother to her son Jade Wilson (wife Beckye), and her daughters Nicole Happe (husband Mike) and Lindsey Wilson. Her role as a grandmother was one she embraced with joy and pride, doting on her six grandchildren, Jaislynn (Tyler), Mason (Kristin), Elyssa, Max, Wilson, and Charlie. The delight of her later years was her great-grandchild Tate, and the anticipation of welcoming another great-grandson, due on June 4.
For 35 years, Janelle worked for optometrist Dr. Terry Brown, where she not only found her professional calling but also fostered lifelong friendships. Her colleagues were among her very best friends, and together they created an environment of support and camaraderie that extended far beyond the workplace.
Janelle’s interests were a reflection of her love for life and her unwavering support for her family. She found immense joy in watching her grandchildren compete in volleyball, dance, football, and basketball. These moments were cherished opportunities for her to express her pride and encouragement. Janelle’s presence at these events was a source of inspiration and comfort to her loved ones.
Beyond the sidelines and dance recitals, Janelle relished in the simple pleasure of visiting with friends and family, especially her siblings Audrey Karinen (Bob), Denise Figueroa (Luis), Kim Shugar (Jim) and Charlie Thielen (Sue). The Wilson home was often filled with laughter and stories, a testament to her ability to bring people together. Her sense of humor was infectious, and she had a unique talent for finding light in even the most challenging situations.
And, we can’t forget her forever love for all things fashion. She always had the latest trend in shoes, purses and clothing….especially donning all things Cyclone or Hawkeye, to support her pride for her favorite Iowa teams! Of course, this love for fashion started when she was a little girl with her patent leather shoes and tulle slips that she wore everywhere. She loved hearing the tap, tap, tap of the shoes as she proudly wore them around.
Janelle’s life was a portrait of courage. She faced her illness with a resilience that inspired others to find strength in their own struggles. Her loving nature was a constant in the lives of those she touched, and her memory will continue to be a guiding force of love and kindness. Janelle’s legacy is one of love, laughter, and the enduring strength of family. Her spirit will live on in the stories told, the memories cherished, and the lives she has touched. Though her physical presence is no longer with us, the essence of Janelle Lynn Wilson will forever be a part of the fabric that binds her family and friends together. Rest in peace, dear Janelle. You have left us richer for having known you, and for that, we are eternally grateful.
Janelle was preceded in death by her beloved daughter Lindsey; her parents Curly (Duane) and Cora Lee Thielen, her parents-in-law Max and Dorothy Wilson, and brothers-in-law, Rick Wilson and Bud Rew.
Services will be held at a later date. Slininger-Schroeder Funeral Home of Jefferson is assisting the family.
