The Greene County girls basketball team fell in non-conference action Jan. 4 to Webster City 53-18 but won their Heart of Iowa Conference clash with Saydel Jan. 8, 59-42. Both games were played at the new Greene County gymnasium in Jefferson. The Rams are now 2-2 in conference play and 3-4 overall.
Friday was Senior Night. Eliza Carlson, Brianna Osterson, Makala Kafer, Lily Muir and Sadie Wilson were honored for their dedication to the team.
Webster City 53 ~ Rams 18
Greene County had a dismal night on offense, posting only 18 points in four quarters. Webster City took a 14-5 first quarter lead and by halftime the Lynx were ahead 29-11. The Rams just weren’t able to get their shots to fall, scoring five in the third and two in the fourth period. WC claimed the victory, their first, 53-18.
Wilson was high scorer for the Rams with nine points on three baskets beyond the arc. Junior Brianna Habben added four points, Kafer three and Carlson two. Sophomore Kamryn Sanders led the team in rebounding with five.
Greene County made 23 percent of their field goals while the Lynx hit 51 percent. The Rams hit the boards for 24 rebounds while WC grabbed 21. GC had 32 turnovers compared to 11 for Webster City.
Rams 59 ~ Saydel 42
A total offensive turnaround for the Rams led to their third victory of the season, a 59-42 win over Saydel Friday. Greene County was down by one, 13-12, at the first break in action. Both teams fired 16 points in the second quarter for a 29-28 Eagle lead. The Rams added 13 points in the third period while holding Saydel to five, gaining a 41-34 advantage. GC again found the range in the final frame, posting a big 18 points when the Eagles hit just eight for a 59-42 win for the Rams.
“I am very proud of the girls,” said coach Todd Gordon. “The effort that they played with was really intense and they never let up once we took control in the second half. It was a great Senior Night and a nice way to celebrate this very special group.”
Habben led the Rams with 15 points, followed by Kafer with 13 and Wilson and sophomore Natalie Heupel with eight each. Habben posted a double-double with 12 rebounds; Muir grabbed seven and Wilson, six.
The Rams improved greatly on shooting percentage, making 25/56 from the field for 45 percent, but made just six of 18 at the free throw line. Greene County pulled down 39 rebounds but committed 30 turnovers. ~courtesy of The Scranton Journal
