Greene County district court ending Nov. 6

Note: The Greene County clerk of court office was closed Oct. 29 through Nov. 6 due to a staff shortage.

In Greene County district court Juan Angel Guzman, 33, of Jefferson was sentenced Oct. 23 to two years in prison after he pleaded guilty to a charge of theft- third degree, amended from theft- second degree. The prison term was suspended and he was placed on probation to the Iowa Department of Correctional Services for two years. He was fined $625 with a $93.75 surcharge. The court found him unable to pay restitution for his court appointed attorney’s fees or court costs.

In a separate case, Guzman was sentenced to 12 days in jail after he pleaded guilty to a charge of theft- fourth degree. He was fined $315 with a $47.25 surcharge. (Sentencing: Honorable Joseph B. McCarville)

Craig Russell Louk, 61, of Jefferson was granted a deferred judgment Oct. 28 after he changed his plea to guilty to a charge of operating while intoxicated. He was placed on probation to Boone/Greene County Probation for one year, and he must undergo a substance abuse evaluation and complete any recommended treatment at his own expense. A judgment was entered for a $1,250 civil penalty; one-half was waived after he obtained a temporary restricted license. Court costs were $154.55. (Sentencing: McCarville)

Nyakudt Gatkek Chuol, 19, of Ankeny was granted a deferred judgment after he changed his plea to guilty to a charge of manufacture, deliver or possession of marijuana with intent to deliver. He was placed on probation to the Iowa Department of Correctional Services for two years, and he must undergo a substance abuse evaluation and complete any recommended treatment at his own expense. A judgment was entered for a $750 civil penalty and $100 court costs. (Sentencing: McCarville)

Tina Gail Ganzeveld, 41, of Fort Dodge was found not guilty at a jury trial Oct. 20 of operating while intoxicated. Prior to the trial, a judge upheld a motion by Ganzeveld’s attorney to suppress evidence against her as it was gathered during an illegal search of her vehicle by a Jefferson police officer. A judgment for $100 court costs was entered against Ganzeveld. The Honorable Thomas W. Mott presided over the trial.

Mason Edward Burkett, 22, of Grand Junction was sentenced to one year in jail after he changed his plea to guilty to a charge of OWI. All but two days of the jail time was suspended and he was placed on probation to Boone/Greene County Probation for one year. He may complete the Des Moines Area Community College 48-hour alcohol education program in liue of the jail time. He must undergo a substance abuse evaluation and complete any recommended treatment at his own expense. Burkett was fined $1,250 with a $187.50 surcharge; one-half will be waived if he obtains a temporary restricted license. Court costs were $100. (Sentencing: McCarville)

Jacob Thomas Monthei, 22, of Jefferson was sentenced to 30 days in jail after he pleaded guilty to a charge of animal neglect, amended from animal neglect causing death or serious injury. The jail time was suspended and he was placed on informal probation to the Greene County sheriff for one year. Monthei was fined $625 with a $93.75 surcharge. The court ruled he is unable to pay restitution for his court appointed attorney’s fees or court costs. (Sentencing: McCarville)

Persons pleaded not guilty at arraignment as follows: Justin Michael Cosnotti, 35, of Jefferson, harassment- first degree and tampering with a witness or juror; Nicholas Weber, 20, of Jefferson, manufacture or possess with intent to deliver marijuana, failure to affix a tax stamp, and obstructing prosecution; Nicole Terese Borkowski, 35, of Jefferson, child endangerment; Nathaniel Clark Aldrich,32, of Jefferson, willful injury causing serious injury and domestic abuse assault causing injury or mental illness; and Peggy Sue Fulton, 58, of Ames, wanton neglect of healthcare facility resident. Trial dates were set for Jan. 26 for Cosnotti, Borkowski, Aldrich and Fulton. A trial date of Dec. 8 was set for Weber.

Cases were initiated in Greene County district court as follows: Brandon Lee Ferguson, 22, of Jefferson, possession of methamphetamine; Alex Garron Treft, 29, of Grand Junction, eluding; Randolph Lee Glass, 54, of Rippey, OWI; Stephen Tracy Redding, 32, of Coon Rapids, OWI- second offense; Steven Logan Dzuris, 32, of Jefferson, criminal mischief- third degree, and in a separate case, interference with official acts causing bodily injury; and Angel Vaughan, 38, of Marshalltown, possession of marijuana, operating while under the influence, and eluding while participating in a felony or causing injury.
