Following are excerpts of activities reported by the Jefferson police department:
Monday, Aug. 31: At 2:30 pm a complainant reported the theft of a lock box containing prescription medications from a residence in the 300 block of W. Washington St. The complainant gave the officer a list of suspects; the officer is investigating. At 3:05 pm an officer performed a traffic stop in the 200 block of N. Wilson Ave with a driver whose vehicle was missing the front registration plate. The officer’s investigation led to the arrest of Marlene Eleanor Anderson, 50, of Jefferson for driving while license barred (aggravated misdemeanor)*. She was also cited for failure to maintain registration plate.
Sunday, Aug. 30: At 7:01 pm a complainant reported an abandoned bicycle in the 100 block of S. Olive St. The officer impounded the bike.
Saturday, Aug. 29: At 2:27 am an officer was requested to assist the sheriff’s office with a personal injury accident in the 1900 block of County Road E-53 (230th St) west of Grand Junction. At 4:29 pm an officer investigated a backing accident in the 500 block of E. Vest St. Brady Stauffer of Jefferson was backing his 2005 Chevrolet Colorado pickup truck from a private drive when he backed into a 2019 Chevrolet Tahoe parked on the street. Damage to the parked vehicle, which is owned by Melissa Caraher of Jefferson, was estimated at $400. Stauffer will be cited for unsafe backing. At 7:48 pm staff at Wild Rose Casino advised of a female patron who had previously signed a self-exclusion form relinquishing her right to gamble in Iowa. The officer escorted Linda Lou Volquartsen of Carroll from the facility and charged her with trespass-simple*.
Friday, Aug. 28: At 1:12 am an officer located a bicycle lying in the middle of the street at N. Oak and W. State St. Subjects arrived and advised the officer a female had crashed her bike and walked home from the area. They took custody of the bike. At 11:37 am the Story County attorney’s office requested assistance from a Jefferson officer in locating a male in Jefferson. The officer located the subject and forwarded his info back to Story County. At 8:02 pm staff at the Greene County Community Center requested an officer to remove a bat from the building. The officer could not reach the bat, due to the high ceilings. At 10:01 pm Rick Brown reported he had backed over the stop sign at E. Lincoln Way and S. Chestnut St. Brown was cited for unsafe backing. Damage to his 2012 Dodge Ram 2500 pickup truck was estimated at $500. Damage to the stop sign was estimated at $400.
Thursday, Aug. 27: At 5:44 am an officer removed a bat from the Greene County Community Center. At 2:19 pm a complainant reported at the LEC that a friend was in Jefferson and was not acting normally. He said his friend had left his vehicle in the 300 block of N. Elm St and had entered a residence in the 300 block of N. Vine St. Officers had knowledge the residence is currently vacant. Officers and deputies arrived and made contact with the male subject. The officers discovered several broken windows in the residence and arrested the male subject. Matthew John Goff, 46, of Bayard was charged with criminal mischief- fourth degree (serious misdemeanor) and trespass- second offense (simple misdemeanor)*. At 2:21 pm a complainant reported a backing accident in the 100 block of E. Clark St. Officers were busy with the previous entry and a deputy covered this accident.
Wednesday, Aug. 26: At 6:58 pm staff at Wild Rose Casino reported a female at the facility on the gaming floor after signing a self-ban form from gambling in Iowa. The officer cited Mollie Sue Frazier of Boone for trespass-simple* and escorted her out of the casino. At 8:20 pm a female brought a checkbook and other personal paperwork to the LEC. She had found the items in the street in the 300 block of N. Olive St. The officer returned the property to the owner, who advised he had mistakenly left the items on top of his car as he drove down the street.
Tuesday, Aug. 26: At 11:58 am a resident captured a stray dog and met an officer at the pound. The officer placed the animal into the animal holding facility. At 8:20 pm a female brought a checkbook and other personal paperwork to the LEC. She had found the items in the street in the 300 block of N. Olive St. The officer returned the property to the owner, who advised he had mistakenly left the items on top of his car as he drove down the street.
Tuesday, Aug. 25: At 8:21 pm a resident in the 500 block of Rushview Drive was reported to be burning brush. The officer went to the address and advised of the county wide burn ban and had him extinguish the small fire.
Monday, Aug. 24: At 11:41 am a complainant reported a stray dog in the 300 block of E. State St. The officer placed the animal in the animal holding facility. At 4:22 pm a business owner reported a burglary to his tool trailer in the 400 block of N. Cedar St. Numerous hand tools were removed from the locked trailer after gaining entry. A complete list of stolen items and values will be provided to the officer in a few days. An investigation has started. At 11:26 pm a caller advised of a vehicle parked near S. Cedar and E. Harrison Sts. A male exited the car and was snooping around the Sloan Plumbing building. The officer did not locate the male but did locate the suspicious vehicle parked there. The officer is working to determine if the male is a suspect in the recent burglaries.
Sunday, Aug. 23: At 9:35 pm a complainant reported the strong odor of anhydrous near Mulberry and Central Ave. The officer located a leaking tank and Landus Coop was contacted. An employee of the coop stopped the tank from leaking a short time later. At 11:09 pm while patrolling parks, an officer noticed criminal mischief at Russell Park. Someone had written on tables and signs with a permanent marker. Paint had been chipped off a wall with an unknown object. The officer had not seen anyone in the park that evening and does not know when the crime had occurred.
Saturday, Aug. 22: At 9:15 am a complainant reported damage to a railroad tie wall in his alley in the 500 block of N. Wilson Ave. He believed a tree company hired by the city to clean up storm damage had struck his retaining wall while cleaning up debris in the alley.
Friday, Aug. 21: At 1:32 am a complainant reported a burglary to an RV parked in the 400 block of E. Harrison St. Unknown subject(s) had removed a TV, DVD player and a grill from the RV. The items were valued at $200. The officer removed some items for possible latent prints and the investigation continues. At 7:05 am staff at Wild Rose Casino reported an abandoned bicycle there. The officer placed the bike in the impound lot. At 10:13 am a complainant reported a stray dog running freely near W. South St and Grimmell Rd. The officer placed the animal in the animal holding facility.
Thursday, Aug. 20: At 9:16 am staff at Sparky’s One Stop reported a vehicle had been parked there for several days without registration plates. Staff wanted to verify if it was stolen. The officer ran the VIN through NCIC and learned the vehicle had been reported as stolen. At 5:48 pm a traffic stop resulted in the officer citing Samantha Peel of Jefferson for driving while license suspended. There was an active Boone County arrest warrant for Peel on a charge of possession of marijuana– second offense*. The officer placed her in custody for the warrant. At 7:13 pm a complainant requested officers at a residence in the 200 block of N. Olive St for a domestic argument. The officer worked to diffuse the issue and the two separated for the remainder of the evening. At 7:43 pm the officer was called back to the same residence as the male reported he had been physically assaulted by the female. The officer’s investigation led to the arrest of Brooke Renae Venteicher, 38, of Jefferson for domestic abuse assault– simple*.
Wednesday, Aug. 19: At 9:12 am a complainant reported checks stolen from a residence in the 400 block of S. Cedar St. Several checks had been forged and used. Some checks were used at local businesses. The officer is investigating. At 10:50 am staff at Fareway reported a male transient begging for money outside the store. Officers made contact with the subject and identified him. There is a Story County arrest warrant for the male, but Story County would not extradite him at this time due to Covid-19. Officers advised him to leave the property. At 11:56 am staff at HyVee reported the same male transient was now at that business begging customers for money. Officers arrived and moved him on his way. At 8:48 pm a complainant reported a foul odor in the 300 block of W. Greenewood Rd. The officer arrived and found the LP was turned on to a grill that was not lit. The officer turned off the valve.
Tuesday, Aug. 18: At 1:30 pm a resident reported she had caught the stray mastiff that has been running freely for the past several weeks near the N. Cedar St railroad crossing. Officers retrieved the dog and placed it in the animal holding facility. The animal has created numerous calls by residents. Officers were unable to get near it before it ran off.
Monday, Aug. 17: At 3:02 pm a caller advised of a stray dog in the 1500 Block of Hawthorne Lane. The officer retrieved the animal and placed it in the animal holding facility. At 4:46 pm a complainant reported a female mastiff in her yard in the 200 block of E. Perry St. She reported she cannot get near the animal because it runs from her. This is the same animal officers have been attempting to capture for several weeks now. It runs from officers as they get near it. The animal was not located.
Sunday, Aug. 16: At 5:08 am an officer performed a traffic stop with a vehicle travelling 80 mph on Highway 30 near Doreen Wilber Drive. The officer’s investigation led to the arrest of Jaime Coronado, 19, of Jefferson for operating while intoxicated (serious misdemeanor)*. He was also cited for possession of alcohol under legal age, fail to provide proof of financial liability, and excessive speed. At 4 pm a complainant reported an adult male was at HyVee with his juvenile niece. The complainant reported the male is on the sex offender registry and can not be around children under age 14. The officer made contact with the male and juvenile at the business. The child was sent home with the complainant. The officer cited the male for failure to have a valid driver’s license and is investigating the alleged sex offender registry violation.

Friday, Aug. 14: At 3:47 pm a traffic stop on Highway 30 near M Ave resulted in the arrest of Marlene Eleanor Anderson, 50, of Jefferson for driving while license barred (aggravated misdemeanor)*. She was also cited for failure to give notice of address change, failure to carry registration card, failure to provide proof of financial liability and failure to display registration plate.
Thursday, Aug. 13: At 12:46 pm staff at Fareway reported the theft of vodka. The officer reviewed video and identified the female. Charges are pending. At 2:10 pm the Boone County sheriff’s office requested Jefferson officers attempt to locate a jeep that had been involved in a hit and run accident in Boone County. It was last known westbound on Highway 30 from Boone. The officers did not see the reported vehicle in Jefferson. At 3:48 pm staff at Oly’s Corner reported a male had just attempted to use a counterfeit $100 bill to purchase fuel and items at the business. The officer recognized the bill as movie prop money and seized it for evidence. The officer is investigating. At 7:39 pm a complainant reported her son had been bitten by a dog as he walked near W. Head and N. Walnut Sts. He was petting the animal when it bit his nose and thigh. This had occurred earlier in the day. Officers are working to locate and identify the animal involved.
Wednesday, Aug. 12: At 6:09 am a complainant reported cows in the roadway near Elm and 250th St on the south edge of Jefferson. The officer contacted the owner of the cattle and advised them of the situation. At 1:23 pm a complainant reported hearing an explosion near Grimmell Rd and W. Lincoln Way. The officer located a tree branch on a power line, causing an electrical arch. Alliant Energy was contacted to correct the issue.
Tuesday, Aug. 11: At 3:57 am a resident reported hearing an audible alarm sounding in the N. Elm St area. The officer located an alarm sounding at the Cobblestone Hotel. Entry was gained by the Jefferson fire department and no smoke or fire was located. The manager of the facility was advised, as the hotel is temporarily closed. At 4:04 pm a complainant reported her powerline was still down over her garage in the 600 block of S. Vine St. She was advised to contact Alliant Energy again, or an electrician. At 6:32 pm an officer assisted the Jefferson fire department in the alley of the 300 block of S. Chestnut St. A branch was on a powerline and was smoldering. Alliant was notified. At 9:03 pm a complainant reported the powerline to her residence in the 900 block of W. Lincoln Way was sparking against her house. She had called Alliant numerous times, but no one had come out yet. An officer stood by until an Alliant crew arrived at 9:44 to make repairs to the line. At 11:59 pm a complainant reported a possible no contact violation occurring at Wild Rose Casino. A protected party in a protective order against him had reportedly spoken to him. The officer is investigating.
Monday, Aug. 10: At 9:55 am officers responded to storm siren activation as a storm passed through Jefferson. Officers cleared manageable pieces of brush from roadways and responded to numerous calls of downed cable and power lines throughout the city. Officers were dispatched to numerous locations in the city responding to alarm activations. A list of downed lines was gathered to be passed on to Alliant Energy. Numerous intersections and streets were closed by officers for downed lines and downed trees. Public works employees began to remove large trees and branches from city streets with chainsaws and equipment immediately after the storm passed. Severe property damage was reported from numerous businesses in town. At 7:34 pm an officer assisted the Jefferson fire department at Washington Park. Power lines had fallen onto the shelter house and were smoking. Alliant Energy was notified. At 7:36 pm officers assisted the Jefferson fire department with a small brush fire at a residence in the 200 block of S. Chestnut St. Downed power lines had ignited downed brush after the lines were re-energized. Alliant Energy was notified. At 7:46 pm an officer responded to a downed line arcing on a tree in the 400 block of S. Locust St. Alliant Energy was notified. ***** Officers issued three violation notices on the downtown square for street sweeping parking violations during the reporting period.
Sunday, Aug. 9: At 11:06 am a deputy requested assistance from Jefferson officers in locating a reported vehicle from Carroll County. The report stated two males had approached a female driver in Carroll and tried to get her to come to a motel with them. She left Carroll and the males followed closely behind her and were flashing their headlights as they traveled east into Greene County. The officer spotted the reported vehicle on Highway 30 near Grimmell Rd and performed a traffic stop. The male occupants advised they had just left Carroll, but denied they were involved with speaking to the female. The officer identified the two and let them go on their way. The female called and advised she was at Sparky’s One-Stop. The officer went to that location and spoke to her. All information was relayed to the Carroll PD because the event occurred there. At 11:46 am staff at the Greene County Medical Center emergency department requested an officer for a dog bite. The officer learned a young girl as staying with her father at a residence in town. She had hit her sister in the arm and their dog had nipped her in the face. The child suffered a superficial laceration to her face. the animal’s owner provided a current vaccination record and advised the animal was immediately leaving the city. The animal will be privately quarantined outside of Jefferson, per state law when a human bite occurs. At 4:54 pm an anonymous caller advised of a dog defecating in all neighboring yards in the 200 block of S. Cedar St. The officer did not locate a dog running in the area and had no caller information to follow up on the complaint. At 7:32 pm a complainant reported the theft of power tools from a garage under construction in the 100 block of E. Park St. The complainant reported $650 in power tools missing from the garage. The officer is investigating.
Saturday, Aug. 8: At 8:08 am an officer and a deputy arrested Juan Angel Guzman, 33, of Jefferson on an outstanding Greene County arrest warrant for violation of terms of release*. At 8:47 am a caller advised a bicycle had been dumped in the 300 block of N. Locust St. The officer placed the bike in the impound lot. At 9:12 am a complainant reported neighbor children shooting BB guns in the 100 block of E. Central Ave. The officer spoke to a parent of the children and advised that was against city ordinance. The parent said she thought it was okay to shoot them with parental supervision. She advised now that she knows, it will not happed again. At 1:39 pm a city employee reported seeing a young female with a backpack lying in a yard near W. Harrison and S. Pinet Sts. The officer thought he knew who the woman was, a woman he knows to be homeless. The officer contacted local clergy and the Homeless Coalition of Greene County and provided information about the female. At 3:10 pm an officer investigated a hit-and-run accident at the intersection of W. State and N. Cedar Sts. Janice Napolitano had parked her 2017 Lincoln MKZ in the area. When she returned, she found damage to the front driver’s side. The officer estimated damage at $1,500. At 8:34 pm a complainant reported a group of people being extremely loud in the 100 block of N. Cedar St. When the officer called the complainant for more information, the complainant advised the subjects had apologized and ended the noise. The officer took no action. At 9:52 pm a caller advised of loud music coming from an event at the fairgrounds. The officer went to the area and determined the noise was not excessive. At 10:32 pm a caller advised of loud music coming from a residence in the 100 block of N. Cedar St. The officer spoke to the residents and they turned down the music.
Friday, Aug. 7: At 2:19 pm a complainant reported the theft of a purse from a residence in the 200 block of N. Locust St. The officer is investigating. At 7:15 pm a juvenile female reported a heavy-set male following her in a white truck as she walked in the 400 block of W. Madison St. The officer is investigating the reported event. At 8:37 pm a complainant reported a female stole a blanket from a yard in the 500 block of W. Madison St. The female had asked permission to swim in the complainant’s backyard pool. When permission was denied, she took the blanket and walked away. The officer located the female a short distance away, with the blanket in her possession. The officer arrested Brianne Kara Wolf, 29, of Jefferson for theft- fifth degree*. At 10:30 pm a complainant reported three subjects with flashlights attempting to break into the rear door of a vacant residence in the 600 block of W. Lincoln Way. The three fled as the complainant yelled at them. Extra patrol was put in place in the area.
Thursday, Aug. 6: At 3:59 pm staff at Thomas Jefferson Gardens reported a theft of sweet potatoes. An officer is investigating. At 9:55 pm an officer assisted the Calhoun County sheriff’s office with a vehicle pursuit near the intersection of 110th Street and Kirkwood Ave in Highland Township
Wednesday, Aug. 5: At 10:50 am a complainant reported a male had entered her vehicle and stolen a mobile phone in the Hy Vee parking lot. An officer is investigating. At 1:30 pm an anonymous female notified the LEC of illegal burning in the 800 block of W. South St. An officer notified the individual burning yard waste of the burn ban and the fire was extinguished. At 5:27 pm an individual located a stray dog in the 1200 block of N. Elm St. An officer transported the small brown Dachshund mix to the animal holding facility.
Tuesday, Aug. 4: At 9:38 am the manager of West View Village Apartments reported a burglary had occurred sometime in July in the community room. Unknown subjects entered a locked closet and removed a box containing keys to all apartments. The officer is investigating. At 10:44 am a complainant reported a neighbor child shooting a BB gun in the 100 block of E. Central Ave. The officer spoke to the youth and advised him he can not shoot the BB gun in town, per city ordinance. At 8:25 pm staff at HyVee reported the theft of alcohol from the store earlier in the day. The officer viewed the video and had requested an arrest warrant for Alysha Marie Oravetz, 39, of Jefferson for theft- fifth degree.
Monday, Aug. 3: At 7:45 am an officer took a report of criminal mischief at Thomas Jefferson Gardens. Unknown subjects sometime during the last two weeks stole a decorative display wagon and pried open a donation box. It is unknown if any money was in the box. The wagon was valued at $150. At 8:13 am an officer took a second report of theft from a construction site in the 100 block of W. Gallop Rd. More chains and come-a-longs were stolen from the site. At 8:30 am a complainant reported he had purchased an oven from a Jefferson resident on Facebook. He met the male at a residence in the 600 block of W. Monroe St and paid for the item. The subject took the money and went inside the residence. The complainant began to look over the oven and discovered it was not the same oven pictured in the photography, but had missing and damaged parts rendering it inoperable. The male would not come to the door after the complainant made this discovery. The officer’s investigation led to requesting an arrest warrant for Brandon Michael Mitchell, 28, of Jefferson for theft- fifth degree*. At 9:51 am a complainant reported someone had submitted “change of address” paperwork at the post office sending her mail to Scranton. The complainant had not requested it. At 5:51 pm a complainant reported the theft of her mobile phone while she was working at Sparky’s One Stop. Staff at the business is working to view surveillance footage to determine a suspect. The value of the phone is $1,000.
Sunday, Aug. 2: At 6:04 am a complainant reported a subject passed out in a running vehicle with the music up loud at Sparky’s One-Stop. The officer’s investigation led to the arrest of Karl Maurice Krieger, 27, of Ames for operating while intoxicated- first offense (serious misdemeanor)*. At 9:30 am a complainant reported a possible attempted burglary at a residence in the 800 block of S. Chestnut St. The officer is investigating.
Saturday, Aug. 1: At 5:31 pm a complainant reported the theft of a presidential campaign sign from his yard in the 800 block of W. Lincoln Way.
