Six Greene County athletes qualify for state Special Olympics

The Greene County High School Special Olympic team braved the below average temperatures April 16 to compete in the north central area track/field competition in Fort Dodge.

Special Olympics Track 2014 004 (2)Students participating were (from left) Cole DeHoet, Kourtlin Thacker, Kim Stanek, Danny Hulbert, Rylie Breheny, Makayla Murray, Melissa Rice and Nick Garreans-Walsh.

First place finishes were earned as follows: Rice, running long jump; DeHoet, running long jump; Stanek, shot put; Breheny, softball throw; Thacker, softball throw; and Garreans-Walsh, shot put and 400 meter dash.

DeHoet, Thacker, Rice and Garreans-Walsh were 1st place winners in the 4×100 meter relay.

Second place finishes were: Hulburt, softball throw; Rice, mini javelin; Stanek, 50 meter dash; and Breheny, standing long jump.

Other placings were: Hulburt, 5th, 50 meter dash; DeHoet, 4th, mini javelin; Murray, 5th, softball throw, and 6th, 50 m dash; and Thacker, 6th, 50 m dash.

Accompanying the team were coaches Deb Rogers, Mona Weltz, Sue Lansman, and Jeri Gettler.  Volunteers were Tracy Burgart, Chris Hulburt and Noah Juergensen.

First place winners will go on to compete in the state competition held in Ames May 22-24.
