Weather data tracked by volunteer observer John Beltz proves that just as we thought, September was much wetter and a bit cooler than normal.
Beltz reported a total of 4.61 inches of rain, compared to normal September precipitation of 2.95 inches. He reported rain fell on 12 days during September, with the heaviest single day rainfall being 1.23 inches on Sept. 10. Beltz takes his readings at 7 am each day, so the storm the Sunday of Labor Day weekend (Aug. 31) was part of his data for Sept. 1. He reported 1.05 inches of rain and wind gusts up to 66 mph.
Temperatures were closer to normal. Beltz reported and average high temperature of 73 degrees, compared to the normal average high of 76.7 degrees. High temperature for the month was 89 degrees on Sept. 5. The temperature was 80 degrees or warmer on eight days. There were three days on which the temperature didn’t get warmer than 60 degrees.
Average low temperature for September was 50.5 degrees, which is normal. Low temperature for the month was 34 degrees on Sept. 14. Low temperature was in the 50s on 17 days.
Record high temperature in Jefferson in September is 102 degrees on Sept. 5, 1913. Record low temperature is 22 degrees on Sept. 28, 1942.
