Safe Choice Security, a national provider of home security systems recently released lists of “safest cities” in every state. The rankings were determined through an analysis of 2012 FBI crime statistics, according to information provided by the company. Property and violent crime statistics were considered.
Jefferson was ranked as the safest city in Iowa, with a crime index of 89, ranking Jefferson as safer than 89 percent of US cities. Violent crimes were counted at 0.46 per 1,000 in population, and property crimes were rated at 6.22 per 1,000 in population.
Descriptions of each of the 25 safest cities in Iowa were posted on the company’s blog.
“Jefferson, IA, is best known for its peaceful, historic downtown district which contains its oldest theater and plenty of active businesses,” the blog begins. It mentions the Mahanay Bell Tower and the Raccoon River Valley Trail. A photo of the Greene County courthouse heads the write-up.
“While this small city – the safest one in the state – is vigilantly protected by officer with experience interacting with larger federal and state agencies – the grand majority of all calls have been dedicated to public service. JPD stands by its commitment to protect and serve by implementing additional training and special programs. For those looking to start up a new business here, Jefferson is always on the look-out for entrepreneurs to join its burgeoning community. Alongside a low crime rate, this city has a great reputation of being very accommodating of new business,” the blog stated.
“I believe that this shows the outstanding work that the Jefferson police department has done. It shows the dedication of the police chief and his officers to their duties,” Jefferson mayor Craig Berry said. “Also, I think that it shows the intense concern of the entire community with regards to their own safety and that of their neighbors.”
