People who love to sew are invited to put their skills to work for a greater purpose during the Midwest Mission sewing retreat Nov. 12-14 at Midwest Mission’s Jefferson location.
The three-day retreat will bring together mission-minded sewists from the area for a time of sewing, fellowship and service. Participants will create hand-sewn items that become part of Midwest Mission feminine hygiene and layette kits, which are distributed through trusted nonprofit partners to people in need.
“This retreat is a chance to take something you already love doing and use it to make a difference in someone else’s life,” said Danille Curtis, Iowa director for Midwest Mission. “You don’t have to be an expert sewist. You simply need a willingness to serve, learn, and sew with a purpose.
Each participant will receive a pre-cut sewing kit for every sewing session, along with instruction from experienced Midwest Mission volunteers. The retreat will include guided sewing throughout Thursday evening, Friday, and Saturday morning. Participants are welcome to come and go as their schedule allows.
The retreat begins Thursday afternoon with set-up and free sewing time, followed by a potluck dinner. Participants are asked to bring a dish to share.
The retreat is free to participants, although free will donations will be accepted to help cover the cost of the event.
“We love seeing people discover that their everyday skills can become part of something much bigger,” Curtis said. “Every handmade item bevomes part of a kit that can bring practical help, dignity, and hope to someone who needs it. We hope this retreat will inspire people to continue sewing at home to help meet needs around the world.”
The sewing retreat will be held at Midwest Mission, 291 N. Chestnut St, Jefferson.
Registration is required because space is limited. Participants can register through the Midwest Mission sewing retreat webpage a midwestmission.org/sewingretreats or call Midwest Mission at 515-386-2236.
