After the Greene County Historical Society’s Friday, Aug. 7, lunch, attendees can enjoy a piece of vinegar pie.
The pie, a dessert staple on Depression-era dinner tables, will be described by Mikki Schwarzkopf in her presentation, “What They Ate During the Depression,” in a free 12:45 pm program at the Greenewood Center, 401 W. Greenewood Rd., in Jefferson.
“We’ll have some surprisingly declicious food to sample,” says Schwarzkopf.
“For vinegar pie, home cooks substituted vinegar for lemons, and it tasted like lemon pie. During the Depression, people ate whatever was available because they wouldn’t afford, or even get, items like lemons.
“Some of those recipes are still popular today, like flourless chocolate cake,” she adds. “Another favorite was ‘Hoover Stew,’ named for U.S. President Herbert Hoover. Ingredients were ‘whatever you had on hand.’”
The program follows a noon lunch. Cost of the lunch, which includes a bite or two of 1930s fare, is $12. Reservations are due by Tuesday, Aug. 4. Call a History Society community contact or 515-370-4799 to assure a seat at the table.
