Greene County primary results mirror state results

Exception is Republican governor’s race

A total of 1,150 Greene County voters – 18.75 percent –  participated in the June 2 primary election. Of those, 722 voted Republican ballots and 428 voted Democratic ballots.

Races for the Republican nomination for U.S. senator and governor were contested. Ashley Hinson was the winner in the Senate race, receiving 572 votes (82.18 percent) to Jim Carlin’s 124 votes (17.82 percent).

Vote tallies were close among the top three candidates for governor. Adam Steen received 226 votes (31.61 percent), while eventual winner Zach Lahn received 223 votes (31.19 percent). Randy Feenstra received 217 votes (30.35 percent). Eddie Andrews received 26 votes and Brad Sherman received 23 votes.

There was also a race for the nomination for auditor of state. Abigail Maas received 380 votes (58.1 percent) while Lt Gov Chris Cournoyer received 274 votes (41.9 percent). Incumbent state treasurer Roby Smith, state auditor Paul D. Pate, state attorney general Brenna Bird and secretary of agriculture Mike Naig were not opposed.

Democrats had  two contested race on the primary ballot. Greene County Dems followed voters statewide and selected Josh Turek as the candidate for U.S. Senate, awarding him 3012 votes (71.5 percent) while Zach Wahls received 120 votes (28.5 percent).

Democrats voted for Chris New as their candidate for the Iowa House District seat. Charley K. Newman received 139 votes. New will run against incumbent Representative Carter Nordman in November.

Sarah Trone Garriott will be the candidate for U.S. House Iowa District 3, Rob Sand will be candidate for governor, Ryan Peterman will be candidate for secretary or state, Taylor Wettach will be candidate for auditor of state, John Norwood will be candidate for treasurer of state, Chris Jones will be candidate for secretary of agriculture, and Nate Willems will be candidate for attorney general. There were no contests for partisan county level positions.
