County Fair fun is here, July 8-14

The Greene County Fairgrounds becomes the center of the universe this week for Greene County 4-H members, their families, and many other county residents who love the Greene County Fair.

Judging of 4-H static exhibits starts Tuesday at 8:30 am. Livestock will begin arriving later in the day, with 4-H exhibitors checking in swine, beef pen of three, rabbits and poultry between 5 and 7 pm. The first show of the 2025 fair is the 4-H/FFA dog agility and Clover Kids Puppy Pack show at 6 pm at the gazebo near the fair office.

4-H exhibitors of other livestock will check in their animals Wednesday morning. Wednesday is the poultry and dog show. Thursday the swine, rabbits and horses are judged. Friday brings the sheep, goats, beef pen of three and pets into the ring. Saturday is the beef show.

The local Fair Queen contest will take place Wednesday at 7 pm in Clover Hall. Five contestants are vying for the title of Greene County Fair Queen and the right to represent the county at the Iowa State Fair Queen pageant in August.

Contestants are:

Addison Gannon is the daughter of Ben and Maleea Gannon and will be a senior at Greene County High School this fall. She has been an active 4-H member for eight years and has participated in numerous activities throughout high school, including cheer, volleyball, track, softball, National Honor Society, Interact, FCA, and youth group. In her free time, Addison enjoys volunteering in the community, spending time with friends and family, and working. She plans to attend college after graduation to pursue a career as a registered nurse.

Savannah Lansman is the daughter of Teresa and Chad Lansman and recently completed her junior year of high school. She enjoys spending time with her family and friends and takes pride in staying actively involved in both her school and community.

Kaliyah Minnihan, the daughter of Amy and Kelly Minnihan. She is a sophomore at Paton-Churdan High School. She enjoys spending quality time with her family, friends, and animals. Kaliyah stays active through sports and various school and community activities. In her free time, she enjoys photography, crafting, and listening to music.

Ella Tasler, the daughter of Amanda and Brian Tasler and a resident of Paton. She will be a junior at Greene County High School this fall. An active leader in both her school and community, Ella is involved in National Honor Society, band, choir, speech, drama, Student Council, and is a three-sport athlete. A 4-H member for eight years, she currently serves as president of the Cedar-Highland 4-H Club. Ella was recently selected to serve on the State 4-H Council and had the honor of representing Iowa at the 4-H Ignite Teen Summit in Washington, D.C.

Tatum Tucker, 16, will be a sophomore at Greene County High School. Raised in the agriculture world by her parents Tim Tucker and Tara Quirk, Tatum has been actively involved in competitive livestock showing—exhibiting cattle for two years and currently entering her fourth year showing goats. She has served as president of her 4-H club, the Hardin Happy Hustlers, for the past two years. In addition to her 4-H leadership, Tatum was the Strengthening Ag Committee chair for her FFA chapter and will serve as chapter reporter in the coming year. Outside of her agricultural and school involvement, she enjoys spending time with family and friends, trying new things, reading, running, and traveling.

The Little Miss and Mister royalty event will take place during the judges’ conference of the Fair Queen contest.

Exhibits in the open art hall will be accepted Thursday from 10 am to 7 pm at Clover Hall. Judging will be done Friday morning. Click here for more information about the open art hall.

Fun events Thursday include youth archery shooting with Greene County Conservation in the North Hall from 5 to 7 pm; and a cornhole tournament with 515 Cornhole, also at 5 pm.

There will be a live Birds of Prey show in Clover Hall Friday from 1 to 4 pm, and the Water Rocks trailer will be on the fairgrounds from 4 to 7.

Reptiles will be featured in a show by Greene County Conservation Saturday at 1 pm in the gazebo. There will be BINGO in Clover Hall at 2 pm, 9-Square north of the cattle barn from 3 to 6 pm, and the baby contest at 3:30 pm in Clover Hall.

Sunday there will be free inflatables west of the fair office from 1 to 6 pm.

Clover Café opens in the former bus garage south of the fair office Tuesday at 5 pm; it will close at 9 pm. It will open at 7:30 am and close at 9 pm Wednesday through Sunday. Breakfast and lunch specials will be available most days.

Clover Café is a primary fundraiser for Greene County 4-H and gives all 4-H members an opportunity to learn and practice customer service skills.

The Greene County Cattlemen will serve a beef barbecue Friday beginning at 5:30 pm in the north hall. Entertainment will be provided by Greene County’s own Town & Country Band of Churdan. The multi-generational volunteer band is directed by Victoria Anderson.

The Pork Producers and Lamb  Producers will serve a barbecue meal Saturday at 5:30 pm, also in the north hall.

Fair favorites Poppin’ Penelope and stilt walker and magician Peter Brunette will entertain on the fairgrounds Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

The grandstand entertainment on Friday is the popular Wright Rodeo followed by fireworks. Saturday night will feature a Wide Open diesel truck pull. There is a $10 admission for the grandstand entertainment.
