In celebration of April as National Poetry Month, local poets are invited to read their original poems on Sunday, April 28, at the Greene County Historical Museum, 219 E. Lincoln Way in Jefferson.
The public is invited to the free program, which begins at 2 pm. The event is a joint production coordinated by the Community Players of Greene County and the Museum.
All poets with ties to Greene County are invited to recite their works at the program. Call Tori Riley, 515-370-3087, to assure a spot. Or just show up.
Local poets who have signed on to read include Jeffersonians Bryan Helmus, Darrell Pettit and Clay Ross, who debuted as a versifier at the 2023 poetry event.
The Academy of American Poets started the month-long celebration of rhymes and blank verse in 1996 to encourage support for American poetry and poets and the reading and writing of poetry.
“We’re doing our part here in Greene County,” says Riley, who adds “Let’s celebrate verse on an April afternoon. Gather your rhymes, come recite all the lines. We want to hear your words, or just sit and listen, enjoy the phrases strung by local folk. Their poems will surely stoke a tear or two, a smile a laugh.”
