The Greene County boys track and field team, along with coach Chad Morton, are ready to take on the season and have their first meet under their belts as they prepare for a strong season ahead.

The team had their first outdoor meet at Simpson College on March 12, and will compete at Earlham High School on Tuesday, March 26, and at Winterset High School on Friday, March 29.

“We have a great group of kids,” commented Morton. “I’m not sure why, but I have never been more excited about a team. I can’t wait to see what these boys do this year. We have a lot of kids that are capable of big things. It will definitely be a team to follow.”

The team kicked off their season with an indoor meet at Buena Vista University in Storm Lake March 9, with the team already showing their strengths. Top 10 individual finishes were: Long jump – Broc Stream, second, Camden Jacobs, ninth; High jump –  Lane Fields, third; Shot put – Kamden Kinne, fourth; 1600 meter run – Jaden Koller, sixth; 60 meter dash – Trey Shilling, ninth; 200 meter dash – Kaiden Burbank, eighth; and 60 meter hurdles – Zack Stalder, ninth.

The team also saw strong relay finishes, with the 4×400 and 4×800 meter relay teams placing second, the shuttle hurdle group placing fourth and the 4×200 meter relay team placing seventh.

“Our philosophy in our program is to have athletes healthy and happy,” explained Morton. “We plan our season for the end and work our way back. So we look at the championship meets, such as conference, districts, state track meet, and work our way back. These are the meets that we are training for all season.”
