Sheriff’s report – January 2024

Following are excerpts of daily activities reported by the Greene County sheriff’s office:

Wednesday, Jan. 31: At 10:37 am a deputy assisted Grand Junction fire with a pressure washer that caught fire after falling off a trailer on 170th St and X Ave east of Dana. At 12:50 pm a deputy was advised of stolen property scattered throughout the northwest part of the county. No further details of the location were known.

Tuesday, Jan. 30: At 12:44 pm deputies assisted the Jefferson PD with locating a male subject. At 7:48 pm a deputy was advised of smoke near a residence in the 800 block of E. Hager St in Grand Junction. The deputy determined someone was using a smoker.

Monday, Jan. 29: At 10:34 am a deputy assisted the Department of Human Services with a complaint of abuse.

Sunday, Jan. 28: At 4:24 pm a deputy initiated a traffic stop in the 1100 block of 140th St east of Churdan. The deputy arrested the driver, Michael Husar, 63, of Churdan for operating while under the influence and carrying a dangerous weapon*.

Saturday, Jan. 27: At 8:49 am a deputy assisted the Guthrie County sheriff’s office with locating a driver who fled from an accident. The suspected car was located in the 1000 block of 8th St in Scranton.

Friday, Jan. 26: At 9:12 am a deputy initiated an investigation of fraud in the 100 block of 240th St in Scranton Township. At 12:40 pm a deputy was advised of possible elder abuse in the 800 block of Percival St in Grand Junction.

Thursday, Jan. 25: At 1:33 pm a deputy was advised of a juvenile who ran away in the 200 block of N. 16th St in Grand Junction. At 9:11 pm a deputy assisted the Department of Human Resources in the 200 block of N. 16th St in Grand Junction.

Wednesday, Jan. 24: At 11:35 am a deputy assisted the Jefferson fire department in the 1100 blk of 330th St in Greenbrier Township for smoke inside the residence. At 12:56 pm a deputy assisted the Department of Human Resources in the 800 block of Percival St in Grand Junction.  At 1:02 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of a barking dog in the 900 block of Main St in Scranton. At 6:20 pm a deputy investigated a car-deer accident in the 1800 block of 235th St west of Jefferson. Angela Hinds, 25, of Shellsburg was operating a 2020 Chevrolet Camaro when she struck a deer. Damage to the vehicle was estimated at $1,500. At 7:33 pm a deputy investigated a single vehicle accident in the 1000 blk of 110 St in Highland Township. Noel Bartusek, 30, of Des Moines was operating a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The deputy’s investigation led to Bartusek being arrested for operating while under the influence*.  At 8:24 pm a deputy was advised of a missing juvenile in the 200 block of N. 16th St in Grand Junction. The juvenile was located.

Tuesday, Jan. 23: At 8:08 am a deputy investigated a complaint of cattle stolen in the 1600 blk of W Ave in Junction Township.

Monday, Jan. 22: At 8:11 am a deputy investigated a single-vehicle rollover accident on Hwy 4 near 265th St south of Jefferson. Betty Dorpinghaus, 82, of Coon Rapids lost control of her 2008 Chrysler Sebring as she drove over a patch of ice. The vehicle entered the west ditch and rolled. Dorpinghaus was transported to the Greene County Medical Center by Greene County Ambulance.  The vehicle was totaled in the accident.

Sunday, Jan. 21: At 11:03 am a deputy assisted the Webster County animal control officer with looking a for a dog stolen in Fort Dodge. At 2:03 pm a deputy investigated a single-vehicle rollover accident on Hwy 30 near F Ave just east of Scranton. Timothy Hawkinson, 44, of Carroll lost control of a 2001 F150 pickup truck on a patch of ice and rolled the truck once in the ditch. Damage to the vehicle was estimated at $2,000. At 2:12 pm a deputy investigated a two-vehicle accident on Hwy 30 near G Ave east of Scranton. Masie Lewis of Ames was driving her 2010 Kia Soul (direction of travel not provided) when she applied her brakes due to a patch of ice. Grace Barloon, 21, of Nevada was following Lewis, driving a 2009 Nissan Rogue. She also applied her brakes, but struck the rear of Lewis’s vehicle. Barloon’s vehicle entered the ditch after impact. There were no injuries. Damage to Lewis’s vehicle was estimated at $1,500. Damage to Barloon’s vehicle was estimated at $500.

Saturday, Jan. 20: At 9:15 am a deputy investigated a theft on S. 8th and Main Sts in  Grand Junction. At 2:12 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of harassment in the 300 block of Sunset Dr in Grand Junction. At 5:22 pm a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD with trying to find a key that a resident lost in their yard in the 300 block of S. Cedar St. At 5:38 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of trespass in the 1100 block of Eaton Ave north of Grand Junction. At 6:43 pm a deputy assisted a motorist stuck in the ditch on Hwy 30 near X Ave east of Grand Junction.

Friday, Jan. 19: At 6:15 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of a dog running at large in the 700 block of Main St in Scranton.

Thursday, Jan. 18: At 6:41 am the sheriff and a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD in responding to a domestic assault in the 500 block of N. Oak St in Jefferson. At 7:11 am a deputy investigated a complaint of animal neglect in the 700 block of North St in Churdan. At 9:50 am a deputy investigated a complaint of a dog running at large in the 700 block of Main St in Scranton. At 1:16 pm a deputy assisted a motorist in the ditch on 290th St near M Ave in Greenbrier Township. At 5:17 pm a deputy assisted several motorists in the ditch on Hwy 30 at L Ave west of Jefferson. At 8:05 pm a deputy investigated a hit and run accident on 235th St and Q Ave east of Jefferson.

Wednesday, Jan. 17: At 4:44 pm a deputy investigated a report of a truck in the ditch in the 1600 block of 267th St in Grant Township. James Timmons, 43, of Jefferson was arrested for operating a motor vehicle while under the influence and driving while license denied or revoked*. At 9 pm Robert Pool, 29, of Jefferson was booked into the jail for a violation of pre trial release.

Tuesday, Jan. 16: At 11:29 am a deputy investigated a dog bite in the 700 block of Main St in Scranton. At 11:41 am a deputy investigated a single-vehicle rollover accident in the 2200 block of Hwy 25 in Willow Township. Gabriel Pettitt, 20, of Carroll hit a snowdrift and rolled his 2002 Oldsmobile Silhouette. He was not injured. Damage to the vehicle exceeded value. At 4:03 pm a deputy investigated a backing accident in the 900 block of Locust St in Scranton. Paul Gehling, 55, of Scranton was backing his 2007 Dodge Durango and struck a 2014 Chevrolet Tahoe operated by Larry Young, 60, of Coon Rapids. Damage to Gehling’s vehicle was estimated at $750. Damage to Young’s vehicle was estimated at $4,000.

Monday, Jan. 15: At 10:29 am a deputy assisted a motorist on Hwy 30 and S Ave west of Grand Junction.

Sunday, Jan. 14: At 2:48 am a deputy assisted the Calhoun County sheriff’s office with locating a semi that struck a car and left the scene. At 3:01 pm a deputy assisted a motorist stuck in snow on N Ave near 400th St in Webster County. At 4:23 am a deputy assisted a motorist on 230th St near S Ave west of Grand Junction. At 9:17 am the sheriff assisted with a medical call in Jefferson. At 9:21 am the sheriff assisted with a medical call in Jefferson. At 11:43 am the sheriff and a deputy assisted a motorist in the 2200 block of Hwy 25 in Willow Township. At 3:17 pm a deputy assisted a motorist at Hwy 30 and Hwy 4 in Jefferson. At 6:07 pm the sheriff and a deputy assisted with getting a stuck semi off the roadway on 170th St and Q Ave in Paton Township. At 8:30 pm the sheriff and a deputy assisted with removing a semi stuck in snow on 270th St and F Ave in Grant Township.

Saturday, Jan. 13: At 8:50 am a deputy assisted a motorist stuck in the snow in the 100 block of Sunset Dr in Grand Junction. At 10:25 am a deputy found an unoccupied vehicle stuck in a drift on 300th St and Terrace Ave in Washington Township. At 12:41 pm a deputy assisted with a motorist stuck in the snow on 16th St and Hwy 30 in Grand Junction. At 12:42 pm a deputy assisted a motorist stuck in the snow on Hwy 30 and L Ave west of Jefferson. At 1:21 pm a deputy investigated a phone scam in the 500 block of State St in Scranton. At 3:21 pm a deputy assisted a motorist stuck in the snow on 220th St near Hwy 25 at Scranton. At 4 pm the sheriff and a deputy attempted to get to a motorist stuck in the snow on Hwy 25 near 270th St south of Scranton. At 4:18 pm the sheriff and a deputy assisted a semi stuck in the snow across the roadway on 170th St and Q Ave in Dawson Township. At 5:32 pm the sheriff and a deputy assisted a motorist stuck in the snow on Hwy 25 near 290th St in Willow Township. At 10:50 pm the sheriff assisted with a medical call in the 1000 block of W. Lincoln Way in Jefferson. At 11:52 pm the sheriff and a deputy assisted a motorist on Hwy 25 near 290th St.

Friday, Jan. 12: At 2:33 am a deputy assisted a motorist in the ditch in the 100 block of 325th St in Willow Township. At 12:37 pm a deputy assisted a motorist stuck in a snowdrift in the 1400 block of 225th St in Jackson Township. At 5:02 pm a deputy assisted a motorist stuck on Jefferson St in Scranton. At 5:50 pm a deputy took a report of an unoccupied truck stuck in a snow drift on 290th St near V Ave in Washington Township. At 6:05 pm the sheriff assisted a motorist who was stuck in a drift on Elm St and W. Lincoln Way in Jefferson. At 6:36 pm the sheriff assisted a motorist stuck in a snowdrift on 130th St near X Ave in Paton Township. At 6:55 pm a deputy and the sheriff assisted four motorists stuck in a drift on 230th St near Falcon Ave in Jackson Township. At 8:18 pm the sheriff and a deputy assisted a motorist stuck in a drift on Hwy 25 near 320th St in Willow Township. At 10:16 pm a deputy assisted a motorist stuck in a drift in the 200 block of W. Lincoln Way in Jefferson. At 10:22 pm the sheriff assisted a motorist stuck in the snow on S. Elm St and W. Harrison Sts in Jefferson. At 10:44 pm the sheriff and a deputy assisted with a medical call in Grand Junction.

Thursday, Jan. 11: At 5:59 am a deputy assisted a motorist in the ditch on N Avenue near 130th St in Dawson Township. At 8:53 am a deputy investigated a complaint of harassment in the 700 block of Madison St in Scranton.

Wednesday, Jan. 10: At 7:50 pm a deputy assisted a motorist in the ditch on N Ave and 140th St in Dawson Township. At 9:12 pm a deputy assisted a motorist in the ditch in the 300 block of N Ave in Dawson Township. At 9:20 pm a deputy assisted a motorist in the ditch in the 200 block of Hwy 30 in Scranton Township. At 9:22 pm a deputy assisted a motorist in the ditch on Hwy 30 near R Ave east of Jefferson. At 9:27 pm a deputy assisted a motorist in the ditch in the 2100 block of Hwy 25 in Willow Township.

Tuesday, Jan. 9: At 4:53 am a deputy assisted a motorist who was stuck in the ditch on 235th St near S Ave east of Jefferson. At 7:04 am a deputy assisted a motorist in the ditch on Hwy 30 near R Ave east of Jefferson. At 9:48 am a deputy investigated a complaint of harassment in the 300 block of Oak St in Scranton.

Monday, Jan. 8: At 3 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of harassment in the 500 block of E. Main St in Grand Junction. At 10:27 pm a deputy assisted a motorist in the ditch on Hwy 30 near W Ave east of Grand Junction.

Sunday, July 7: At 8:55 am a deputy investigated a complaint of criminal mischief in the 600 block of S. 13th St in Grand Junction. At 4:10 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of harassment in the 500 block of E. Main St in Grand Junction.

Friday, Jan. 5: At 7:20 am a deputy investigated a complaint of trespass in the 500 block of E, Main St in Grand Junction. At 5:16 pm the sheriff assisted the Jefferson PD with a theft at Bomgaars in Jefferson. At 6:23 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of reckless driving in the 200 block of Anyer St in Dana. At 8:04 pm a deputy arrested Linda Cleary, 53, of Grand Junction for possession of a controlled substance- second offense*. Tiffany McCalley, 51, of Grand Junction was arrested for possession of a controlled substance- first offense*.

Thursday, Jan. 4: At 7:40 am the sheriff and deputies responded to an active shooter at Perry High School. At 9:59 am the sheriff and deputies investigated a threat of a copycat shooting. The subject that issued the threat was found to be in the United Kingdom. The FBI was notified of the subject. The threats were issued on Tik-tok. At 12:36 pm a deputy investigated a two-vehicle accident on Hwy 30 Street and 16th St in Grand Junction. Analee Snizek, 68 of Jefferson was eastbound on Hwy 30 driving a 2014 Chevrolet Impala. Henderson did not see Snizek and pulled into the intersection, striking the passenger side of Snizek’s vehicle. Henderson was cited for failure to yield the right of way away from a stop sign. Damage to her vehicle was estimated at $2,000. Damage to Snizek’s vehicle was estimated at $4,000. At 1:37 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of a dog running at large on Hwy 30 near 16th St in Grand Junction. At 4:49 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of chickens running at large in the 500 block of E. Main St in Grand Junction. At 10 pm a deputy investigated a violation of a no contact order in the 600 block of S. 15th St in Grand Junction. At 10:08 pm a deputy investigated a domestic assault in the 600 block of Brentwood Ave in Cedar Township. Kenneth Bonnette, 36, of Scranton was arrested for domestic abuse assault*.

Wednesday, Jan. 3: At 2:21 pm a deputy responded to a garage fire in the 500 block of N. Vine St in Jefferson. There was minor damage to the garage. At 11:06 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of gun shots in the 800 block of Percival St in Grand Junction.

Tuesday, Jan. 2: At 4:32 am a deputy investigated a single vehicle rollover accident on M Avenue near 170th St in Bristol Township. Carlan Brown, 30, of Churdan was traveling north on M Ave and swerved to miss a deer. The 1999 Pontiac Grand Am rolled onto its top in the east ditch and was totaled. At 9:53 am a deputy investigated a complaint of two dogs running at large near R Ave and 255th St in Grant Township. The two dogs were taken to PAWS. At 12:18 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of two dogs running at large in the 2200 block of 240th St in Junction Township. The two dogs were taken to PAWS. At 4:58 pm a deputy assisted the Jefferson police department in responding to a two-vehicle accident on N. Elm St and W. Central Ave in Jefferson. At 5:07 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of cattle out near S Ave and 190th St in Hardin Township.

Monday, Jan. 1: At 5:44 pm a deputy investigated a car-deer accident on Hwy 30 at Orchard Ave east of Jefferson. Paula Rychnovsky, 65, of Rippey struck a deer with a 2017 Nissan Rogue. Damage to the vehicle was estimated at $10,000.

*In all cases when a defendant has been charged, this is merely an accusation, and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
