Police blotter – June 2023

Following are excerpts of activities reported by the Jefferson police department:

Friday, June 30: At 9:11 pm a complainant reported an assault having occurred at Wild Rose Casino. The officer is investigating. At 9:53 pm staff at Wild Rose Casino reported a suspected intoxicated male was attempting to start fights in the casino parking lot. The officer responded and located the male. As a result of the officer’s investigation, Leeroy Steadman of Melcher was arrested for public intoxication*.

Thursday, June 29: At 11:04 a complainant reported a theft of property in the 800 block of W. State St. The officer is investigating. At 7:02 pm a complainant reported a reckless driver on Hwy 30 three miles east of the intersection with Hwy 4. The officer located the vehicle and performed a traffic stop on the driver in the 1400 block of N. Mulberry Rd. As a result of the stop, Grabel Chia, 49, of Churdan was arrested for operating while intoxicated*. He was also cited for driving on the wrong side of a two-way highway, violation of financial liability coverage, and failure to have a valid driver’s license.

Wednesday, June 28: At 11:17 pm a complainant reported she had been assaulted at a residence in the 300 block of E. Harrison St. As a result of the officer’s investigation, Anthony Joseph Nunez was arrested for assault – simple*.           

Tuesday, June 27: At 10:49 am an employee with HyVee reported a theft from the store in the amount of $21.14. The officer’s investigation led to the arrest of Andrew Jensen of Jefferson for theft- fifth degree*. At 1:16 pm a complainant reported hearing what she believed to be gunshots on the evenings of June 25 and 26. The officer will provided increased patrol in the evenings in that neighborhood. *****As a result of an investigation initiated June 18, warrants have been requested for Breanna Mahers and Kimberly Garcia of Jefferson, and for Susan Walters of Lorimor, on charges of assault- simple*, and for James Pena of Jefferson on a charge of domestic abuse assault*.

Monday, June 26: At 10 am an officer began an investigation involving allegations of domestic abuse assault occurring in the 800 block of S. Elm St. The officer’s investigation led to the arrest of Robert Charles Harvilicz of Jefferson at approximately 3 pm. Harvilicz was charged with driving while license revoked, possession of drug paraphernalia (two counts), domestic abuse assault- second offense, dominion/control of firearm/offensive weapon by domestic abuse offender, controlled substance violation, and possession of marijuana*. At 10:22 am a complainant reported fraudulent charges on his credit card. The officer is investigating. At 1:42 pm a complainant brought a stray cat to the Greene County jail to be taken to the animal shelter. The officer was busy with the above situation and a deputy assisted by taking the cat to the shelter. At 3:41 pm a complainant reported the theft of a forklift safety basket from the 200 block of W. Washington St. The officer is investigating. At 5:34 pm the Greene County sheriff’s office requested assistance for a four-vehicle traffic accident at the intersection of Hwy 30 and Forest Ave. The officer assisted as requested. At 9:23 pm Tasha Pierschbacher of Perry reported having struck a deer with her 1999 Honda Accord in the 1500 block of 235th St east of Jefferson. The officer took the report at the scene. Damage to the vehicle was estimated at $200.

Sunday, June 25: At 4:52 pm a complainant reported a stray dog loose in the 300 block of S. Wilson Ave. The officer picked up the dog and took it to the animal shelter. At 6:55 pm a complainant reported a stray dog in the 100 block of W. Lincoln Way. The officer picked up the dog and took it to the animal shelter.

Saturday, June 24: At 8:52 am a complainant reported a stray dog running loose in the 1400 block of Southfield Dr. An officer picked up the dog and placed it in the animal shelter.

Friday, June 23: At 11:22 am an officer investigated a backing accident in the Fareway parking lot. Sally Horak of Jefferson backed her 2007 Chevrolet Impala into a parked 1998 Toyota Avalon owned by Sandra Quam of Jefferson. The Quam vehicle had a reported $250 in damages, while the Horak vehicle had a reported $1,500 in damages. At 9:40 pm a complainant caught a stray cat in the 400 block of W. State St. The officer placed the cat in the animal shelter.

Thursday, May 22: At 6:06 pm an officer assisted the sheriff’s office in looking for a missing juvenile on the bike trail. At 9:01 pm an officer arrested Douglas Fulton, 37, of Jefferson on an outstanding Greene County arrest warrant for failure to appear*.

Wednesday, June 21: At 7:44 am staff at Cobblestone Inn reported a suspicious suitcase in the parking lot. The officer checked the contents and located only clothing. It appeared someone had accidentally left it there. At 2:58 pm a postal employee advised of an aggressive dog in the 500 block of S. Cedar St. The officer spoke to the owner of the animal and changes will be made to end the issue. At 5:12 pm a complainant reported the theft of a bicycle from the 200 block of S. Walnut St. At 5:45 pm security staff at Wild Rose Casino reported a subject there who had signed a self-exclusion form in the past. The officer issued Andrew Pruett of Missouri a citation for trespass – simple*.

Tuesday, June 20: At 2:12 pm Cheri Jean Stalder of Jefferson reported her parked 2022 Toyota Camry had been struck while parked in the parking at the high school baseball field in the 100 block of Ram Drive. Damage to the vehicle was estimated at $3,000. The officer later spoke to a subject about the accident. He advised he did accidentally strike the vehicle and left the area. Trevon Keely of Churdan was driving a 2008 Dodge Avenger owned by Laura Hoyle, also of Churdan. Damage to that vehicle was estimated at $1,500. Keely was cited for failure to have insurance, accident related. At 2:43 pm staff at Casey’s General Store reported a theft of alcohol. The store had video of the event. The officer arrested Janon Butler, 52, of Jefferson for theft- fifth degree (simple misdemeanor)*.  At 5:27 pm a caller advised they had caught a stray dog near N. Locust and E. State Sts. The officer placed the dog in the animal shelter.

Monday, June 19: At 5:16 pm the police department was assisted by the sheriff’s office, EMS, Iowa State Patrol, and DCI with a death scene Investigation in the 800 block of E. Adams St.

Sunday, June 18: At 9:24 am an officer investigated an accident at W. Adams and N. Pinet Sts. Susan Mills of Jefferson was eastbound on Adams driving her 1998 Toyota Corolla. Jordan Ward of Jefferson was southbound on Pinet driving his 2017 Ford Focus. The vehicles collided in the intersection. Ward was cited for fail to yield to vehicle on the right. Damage to his vehicle was estimated at $3,500. Damage to Mills’ vehicle was estimated at $1,000. At 7:15 pm a complainant advised a subject had been assaulted at a residence in the 700 block of Pinet Place. The officer’s investigation led to the arrest of Ashley Spaulding, 26, of Jefferson for assault causing injury (serious misdemeanor)*.  

Saturday, June 17: At 1:57 am an officer assisted the Jefferson fire department with a reported fire at 209 E. Gallup Rd. No active fire was located, but damage was located near garbage cans, which appeared to have been the source of the flames.

Friday, June 16: At 10:56 am management at Tri County Lumber reported a credit card scam. An order was placed on the phone and paid for by credit card. The material was picked up, and the card holder called about fraudulent charges to his card and stated they had not made the purchase. The officer is investigating. At 2 pm staff at Peony Restaurant reported a male had left the restaurant without paying for his meal. The officer recognized the subject from the description given by the employees and later spoke to the subject. He admitted to the theft and was told to pay the bill, or he would be charged with theft- fifth degree. At 2:49 pm a caller reported three juveniles consuming alcohol and smoking at Washington Park. The officer tracked the youngsters to Greene County Community Center and spoke with them. They showed no signs of the alleged conduct suggested by the caller. At 3:27 while on patrol an officer witnessed two juvenile females using a vape device. The officer pulled over and spoke to the two, who gave the officer two vape devices. The officer issued citations to them for person under 21 using vape product. This is a civil penalty, not a criminal charge. At 9:03 pm callers advised of fireworks being set off in the 400 block of E. State St. The officer spoke to a group of subjects and advised them to end the fireworks, as they are not permitted in Jefferson.

Thursday, June 15: At 7:38 am an officer was requested to assist a city worker with a nuisance skunk at Daubendiek Park. The officer assisted as requested. At 9:46 am a complainant reported a homeless female asking for food in the 300 block of E. Monroe St. The officer located the female. With the assistance of the Greene County Homeless Coalition, the female was found a place in an Ames homeless shelter. At 7:01 pm a complainant reported a person going door to door selling home improvement tools. He felt the situation was suspicious and should be checked on. The officer located the subject in the 500 block of W. State St. The person was part of a business selling door to door. He was advised to register at Jefferson city hall prior to selling in town.

Tuesday, June 13: At 12:30 pm a complainant reported the theft of a $350 money order from his vehicle in the 600 block of W. Washington St. At 4:33 pm a complainant reported her cat was missing and she believed her neighbor had it. The officer advised if a cat leaves its property, it is in violation of city ordinances and it can be caught and taken to the shelter. At 5:57 pm a complainant caught a stray dog in the 100 block of N. Olive St. The officer placed the dog in the animal shelter.

Monday, June 12: At 6:27 am a complainant reported a bluetooth speaker, security camera and knives missing from a residence in the 600 block of W. Washington St. The officer is investigating.

Sunday, June 11: At 12:20 am while working security for the Bell Tower Festival officers received several complaints of a disturbance involving two males. The two were separated and removed. The officer is investigating the situation for possible further action. At 10:43 am an anonymous caller reported a deceased cat in the roadway near the intersection of W. Lincoln Way and Oak St. The officer removed the cat. At 2:13 pm a complainant reported a theft from his residence in the 700 block of Pinet Place. The officer is investigating. At 7:24 pm a complainant reported a dog running loose in the 200 block of S. Grimmell Rd. The officer picked up the dog and took it to the Greene County animal shelter.

Saturday, June 10: At 3:46 pm a complainant reported a house on fire in the 400 block of N. Vine St. The Jefferson fire department was dispatched to the scene. The officer assisted as requested. At 7:28 pm a complainant reported a dog running loose in the 600 block of E. Lincoln Way. The officer picked up the dog and took it to the Greene County animal shelter. As a result of the investigation Royce Gonnelly of Jefferson was cited for animals running at large. At 8:41 pm Nicole Jordan of Jefferson reported a minor backing accident near the intersection of Locust St and E. Lincoln Way. Dakota Sawhill attempted to back of 2003 Pontiac Sunfire but struck a legally parked, unoccupied 2018 Chrysler Pacifica belonging to Patrick Warren. Damage to the right quarter panel of the Sunfire was estimated at $400. Damage to the left quarter panel of the Pacifica was estimated at $600.

Friday, June 9: At 7:59 am an employee at Oly’s Corner reported ongoing issues with a customer harassing staff. The officer documented the report as requested. At 12:05 pm a complainant reported a dog running loose in the 200 block of E. Park St. The officer investigated and as a result Royce Gonnelly of Jefferson was issued citations for animal running at large and violation of annual animal licensing. At 12:34 a complainant reported a dog running loose in the 600 block of S. Olive St. The officer investigated and as a result Royce Gonnelly of Jefferson was issued citations for animal running at large and violation of annual animal licensing. At 1:23 pm an officer performed a traffic stop on a side-by-side UTV in the 100 block of S. Vine St. As a result of the stop a juvenile male was warned for operating under the age of 16. At 8:46 pm a complainant reported persons ringing her doorbell and running off. The officer spoke with several juveniles in the area in an effort to correct the issue.

Thursday, June 8: At 6:06 am a complainant reported a burglary at a residence in the 300 block of E. Madison St. Gaming items and change had been taken. The officer is investigating. At 3:24 pm a complainant reported falling victim to a scam email. They were advised a virus was on their computer and it would cost $1,900 to correct the issue. The payment was sent and then requests for further payments kept arriving. They realized it was a scam and ended contact with the subjects. At 4:42 pm a complainant reported a stray dog near Daubendiek Park. The officer placed the dog in the animal shelter. At 6:18 pm an officer arrested Jamie Skylar Blackmon, 23, of Jefferson, on an outstanding arrest warrant for failure to appear on a driving while license suspended charge*.

Tuesday, June 6: At 12:24 pm a mother reported a juvenile sent harassing text messages from her daughter’s cell phone to another juvenile. The officer is investigating.

Monday, June 5: Routine activity reported.

Sunday, June 4: At 4:08 pm a caller advised of a transformer popping in the alley of the 400 block of W. Harrison St. The officer located a downed wire and stood by until an Alliant Energy crew arrived to make repairs. At 6:09 pm a complainant reported catching a stray dog in the 500 block of Hickory Lane. The officer placed the dog in the animal shelter.

Saturday, June 3: At 3:06 pm staff at Sparky’s One-Stop reported a male subject who was urinating near the dumpsters. The officer has developed a suspect and will be requesting arrest warrants for public urination. At 3:21 pm officers were called to a residence in the 700 block of N. Cedar St for a reported domestic assault. The officers found marks on the female victim which were consistent with her version of the event. The officers arrested Dylan Mathew Ades, 20, of Jefferson for domestic abuse assault (serious misdemeanor), possession of marijuana (serious misdemeanor) and possession of drug paraphernalia (simple misdemeanor)*. At 9:24 pm a complainant reported catching a stray cat in the 1500 block of Hawthorne Lane. The officer placed the cat in the animal shelter.

Friday, June 2: At 11 am staff at Hy-Vee reported receiving two bad checks passed at the store. The officer’s investigation led to arrest warrants being requested for Alyssa Lorene Ralson, 31, of Des Moines for two counts of theft- fifth degree (simple misdemeanor) and two citations for driving while license suspended. At 2:45 pm officers were requested at the courthouse for a disgruntled person yelling and causing a scene. Officers arrived and learned the subject had just left the area. Officers located the male and arrested Richard Charles Burkhardt, 54, of Jefferson for public intoxication and disorderly conduct (simple misdemeanors)*. At 3:24 pm a complainant reported a stray dog at Greene County Middle School. The officer placed the dog in the animal shelter. At 3:26 a complainant reported a cow had fallen out of a trailer in the 200 block of S. Elm St. The officer did not locate anything in the area. At 8:36 pm an officer spotted a subject walking in the 600 block of W. Lincoln Way for whom he knew there were outstanding arrest warrants. The officer arrested Gerson Abraham Serrano-Gomez, 19, of Jefferson for outstanding arrest warrants for operating while intoxicated (serious misdemeanor) and possession of alcohol under age (simple misdemeanor)*. He was also cited for failure to maintain control and failure to have a valid driver’s license.

Thursday, June 1: At 9:04 pm a complainant reported being assaulted several days ago in Jefferson. The officer is investigating.

*All charges are merely an accusation. All defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
