Ram softball team wins three, loses two

The Greene County softball team won three of five games last week.

The Rams’ week started on Monday, June 20, with a home game against PCM, where the Rams fell 6-1. Greene County led 1-0 going into the sixth inning whdn the Mustangs scored two runs, followed by four in the seventh. 

Emma Stream hit a double, with singles by Olivia Shannon, Alexa Peters, Emma Hoyle, Grace Hardaway and Chanlyn Cunningham. On the field, the Rams had 21 putouts and four errors. Hoyle pitched, facing 29 opponents, allowing six hits with six walks, one hit batter and nine strikeouts. 

On Tuesday, the Rams traveled to Manson to face the Cougars, taking the win 11-1. Hoyle hit a home run and a double and Stream hit two doubles. Hoyle notched seven RBIs. Stream also had 11 putouts as catcher, while the team had two errors in the night. The Rams pounds out 14 hits with Cunningham picking up three singles (one RBI), two by Paige Teeples and Payton Kokenge. 

Hoyle threw 82 pitches, allowing one hit and two walks with two hit batters and 12 strikeouts. 

Wednesday brought a 3-1 loss for the Rams at West Marshall High School. The game was tied 1-1 in the fourth inning with the Trojans taking the lead with two runs in the fifth. The Rams managed just two hits: a double by Paup and an RBI single by Cunningham. 

Hoyle was on the pitcher’s mound once again, throwing 92 pitches against 24 opponents, allowing seven hits with three walks and seven strikeouts. 

The Rams played in a tournament at South Hamilton High School on Saturday, winning both games. The first game was a faceoff against West Marshall, winning 4-1. The Rams hit seven singles: Peters (2), Hoyle (2, one RBI), Stream (one RBI), Cunningham and Teeples. On the field there were 21 putouts and two errors on 25 total chances. Hoyle threw two hits, three walks and 11 strikeouts.

Algona fell victim to the Rams in the second Greene County appearance on Saturday. The Rams won 2-1. The game was tied at one when both teams scored a run in the first. GC rallied in the seventh for the winning run. The Rams scattered eight hits with two by Olivia Shannon and Kokenge, Peters, Stream, Cunningham and Teeples. Peters and Paup were credited with RBIs. Only one error occurred on the field, and Hoyle threw four hits with two walks and 11 strikeouts. 

Greene County opens Class 3A district competition on Wednesday, July 6, at Southeast Valley at 7 pm. The winner advances to meet the Saydel/Pocahontas victor on the Saydel diamond at 7 pm on July 9.
