Sheriff’s report – June 2021

Following are excerpts of activities reported by the Greene County sheriff’s office:

Wednesday, June 30: At 3:46 pm the sheriff, deputies, Greene County Ambulance, Paton fire Department, Grand Junction fire, and Jefferson fire responded to a fire at John Deere in Paton. The fire was contained to the dust collection system and causing minimal damage. At 5:42 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of trespass in the 600 block of Locust St in Scranton.

Tuesday, June 29: At 8:39 am a deputy investigated an odor of propane on B Ave near 240th St in Scranton Township. At 2:05 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of harassment in the 600 block of 13th St in Grand Junction.

Monday, June 28: At 8:50 am a deputy investigated a complaint of fireworks in the 2000 block of W Ave in Washington Township. At 11:30 am a deputy arrested Laura Friedel, 41, of Webster City on an arrest warrant for a violation of a no contact order*. At 3:24 pm a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD with an arrest at Henderson Park. At 10:44 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of fireworks in Grand Junction.

Sunday, June 27: At 12:05 am a deputy investigated a fire near the Scranton water treatment plant. Scranton fire responded and got the fire under control and it was left to burn. At 4:33 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of illegal dumping on 222nd St near J Ave in Jackson Township. At 7:44 pm a deputy investigated a fireworks complaint on High St near Main St in Scranton.

Saturday, June 26: At 2:24 pm a deputy investigated a violation of a no contact order in Grand Junction. At 6:39 pm a deputy arrested Damien Comstock, 25, of Eagle Grove for driving while license barred*. At 10:25 pm a deputy investigated suspicious activity in the 200 block of Main St E. in Grand Junction.

Friday, June 25: At 6:30 pm a deputy arrested Jacob Hubbs, 21, of Jefferson on a Carroll County arrest warrant for homicide by vehicle- operating while under the influence*. At 8:35 pm the sheriff and deputies assisted the Jefferson PD with a search warrant in the 300 block of E. Lincoln Way. At 8:46 pm a deputy arrested Zachary Flinn, 28, of Rippey on an arrest warrant for ongoing criminal conduct-influence enterprise, a controlled substance violation, and possession of a controlled substance- third or subsequent offense*. At 10:56 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of harassment in the 400 block of E. Paton St in Paton.

Thursday, June 24: At 1:25 am a deputy removed a deer from the roadway on Highway 30 near Eaton Ave east of Scranton. At 4:54 pm a deputy arrested Whitney Campbell-Perez, 23, of Perry on arrest warrants for failure to appear*. At 6:03 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of illegal dumping in the 1800 block of 330th St in Franklin Township. At 9:42 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of harassment in the 700 block of 202nd St in Bristol Township. At 10:18 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of suspicious activity in the 1200 block of B Ave in Kendrick Township.

Wednesday, June 23: At 8:04 am a deputy investigated a theft in the 100 block of Hager St E in Grand Junction. At 10:52 am a deputy investigated a two-vehicle accident on County Road P-14 (J Ave) near 237th St in Jackson Township. Lance Dzuris, 41, of Jefferson was northbound driving a tractor with an implement crossing a narrow bridge. Tracy Stanek, 51, no hometown provided, was southbound and entered the bridge in a 2005 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck. The mirror of the truck hit the implement, breaking the mirror. Damage was estimated at $500. The tractor and implement were not damaged. At 5:46 pm a deputy investigated a 911 hang up in Rippey. At 10:18 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of fireworks near 11th St in Grand Junction.

Tuesday, June 22: At 9:47 am a deputy picked up a stray dog in the 1900 block of 310th St in Washington Township. At 5:17 pm a deputy assisted with horses out in the 1100 block of Orchard Ave in Hardin Township. At 8:50 pm a deputy arrested Raymond Bacon, 45, of Grand Junction for sex abuse- third degree*. At 9:11 pm a deputy investigated a suspicious person near the Grand Junction swimming pool.

Monday, June 21: At 10:40 am a deputy investigated a theft in the 500 block of State St in Scranton. At 12:18 pm a deputy investigated a ditch fire on Highway 30 and C Ave in Kendrick Township. Ralston Fire Department responded and put the fire out. At 9:36 pm the sheriff, a deputy, Iowa State Patrol, Jefferson fire and Greene County Ambulance responded to a two-vehicle fatality on Highway 30 at Orchard Ave east of Jefferson. Logan Ancell, 21, no hometown listed, was eastbound operating a Harley-Davidson  motorcycle. He crossed the center line and struck head on a westbound 2018 Chrysler Pacifica driven by Rochelle Guess, 64, of Jefferson. Ancell was pronounced dead at the scene. Both vehicles were totaled in the accident. Highway 30 was closed for several hours following the accident. The Iowa State Patrol is investigating the accident.

Sunday, June 20: At 3:04 am a deputy assisted the Guthrie County sheriff’s office with a domestic assault in Bayard. At 5:07 am a deputy assisted the Boone County sheriff’s office with a burglary in the 100 block of 260th St in Boone County. At 2:21 pm a deputy investigated a missing goat in the 1800 block of M Ave in Greenbrier Township.

Saturday, June 19: At 1:37 pm a deputy investigated a theft in the 1200 block of Head St in Churdan. At 8:17 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of fireworks in the 800 block of Stanton St in Scranton.

Friday, June 18: At 2:09 pm a deputy investigated a trespass complaint in the 1300 block of 100th St in Dawson Township. At 5:22 pm a deputy investigated a single-vehicle accident in the 500 block of Main St in Paton. A female juvenile lost control of a 2001 Chevrolet Blazer and struck a utility pole. There were no injuries. Estimated damage to the vehicle was $12,000. The utility pole damage was estimated at $1,000. The driver was cited for failure to maintain control. At 10:49 pm a deputy investigated a criminal mischief complaint in the 200 block of 19th St S. in Grand Junction.

Wednesday, June 16: At 12:50 pm the sheriff investigated a single-vehicle rollover accident on 270th St. The accident was found to be in Boone County. The Boone County sheriff’s office investigated the accident. At 1:34 pm the sheriff investigated a single-vehicle accident on 260th St near X Ave in Junction Township. Logan Warnock, 33, of Perry was westbound when he lost control of his 2008 Nissan Altima and entered the south ditch, striking a metal intake pipe. Grand Junction rescue transported him to Greene County Medical Center with minor injuries. Rippey fire also responded to the scene. Damage to Warnock’s vehicle was estimated at $2,500. At 3;34 pm the sheriff and Grand Junction rescue responded to a two-vehicle accident on Highway 30 near County Road P-46 (W Ave) east of Grand Junction. Michael McAtee, 59, of Grand Junction was westbound and stopped for a car that was turning in front of him. He was driving a 2001 Ford F150. Christopher Neppel, 41, of Carroll was following McAtee, driving a 2019 Ram Promaster van when his vehicle rear-ended McAtee’s. Both drivers were wearing their seat belts and no airbags were deployed. McAtee was transported with minor injuries to Greene County Medical Center by Grand Junction rescue. Damage to his vehicle was estimated at $5,000. Damage to the Ram van was estimated at $10,000.  At 5:29 pm a deputy assisted with an unruly child in Grand Junction.

Tuesday, June 15: At 9:41 pm a deputy investigated a car-deer accident on County Road P-14 (J Ave) near 280th St in Greenbrier Township. Trenton Custer, 18, of Jefferson struck a deer with a 2002 Dodge Ram pickup truck, causing an estimated $2,000 damage to the vehicle. At 11:11 pm a deputy arrested Candice Ortiz, 33, of Grand Junction on arrest warrants for disorderly conduct and criminal mischief- fifth degree (simple misdemeanors)*.

Monday, June 14: At 5:47 am a deputy assisted the Gowrie police department with locating a vehicle in Paton. At 9:50 am a deputy arrested Julie Eslinger, 39, of Boone on an arrest warrant for burglary- third degree*. At 2:32 pm a deputy assisted with an unruly child in Grand Junction. At 7:31 pm a deputy investigated a dog bite that occurred in Scranton.

Sunday, June 13: At 9:12 pm a deputy responded to the 1000 block of Railroad St E in Grand Junction for a reported break in. Charges pending upon further investigation. At 9:34 pm a deputy took a report of stolen license plates in the 200 block of 19th St S in Grand Junction. At 10:45 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of harassment in the 800 block of Percival St in Grand Junction.

Saturday, June 12: At 10 am a deputy was requested by the Jefferson PD to provide traffic control for the Bell Tower Festival parade at W. Russell St and S.  Chestnut St in Jefferson.  At 5:01 pm a deputy performed a traffic stop in the 1600 block of Highway 144. The driver, Jonah Lian, 40, of Perry was arrested for operating while intoxicated*. At 5:07 pm deputies responded to the 1900 block of County Road E-18 in Paton for a report of domestic abuse. After investigating, deputies arrested Shane Clark, 41, of Paton for domestic abuse causing bodily injury and on Carroll County arrest warrants*.

Friday, June 11: At 2:50 am a deputy was requested by Calhoun County sheriff’s office to transport a female from Sparky’s One Stop to their location. The deputy met with the Calhoun County deputy at 210th St and N Ave. At 6:52 am a deputy was responded to a road blowout in the 1700 block of 255th St in Grant Township.  At 10:31 am a deputy was advised of a trespasser on the railroad track near 230th St and Linwood Ave west of Jefferson.  At 2:19 pm a deputy investigated a dog bite in the 300 block of Irving St in Scranton. At 6:14 pm deputies investigated a complaint of harassment in the 700 block of 202ndSt in Bristol Township. At 10:47 pm a deputy responded to the 100 block of 18th St N in Grand Junction for reports of fireworks.

Thursday, June 10: At 5:54 pm a deputy responded to the 1000 block and 1400 block of County Road P-14 (J Ave) for pavement blow outs. At 7:09 pm a deputy responded to the 2200 block of P-14 for the pavement buckling. At 10:58 a deputy responded to cattle on the roadway in the 800 block of 230th St in Jackson Township.

Wednesday, June 9: At 8:19 am a deputy responded to the courthouse to provide security for a court hearing. At 1:12 pm a deputy investigated a report of a stolen dog in the 400 block of 18th St N. Grand Junction. At 2:44 pm a deputy was advised of a stray dog in the 100 block of Greene St in Paton. At 7:05 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of harassment in the 200 block of Anyer St in Dana.

Tuesday, June 8: At 10 am a deputy was requested by the owner of a residence in the 300 block of N. Chestnut St in Jefferson to search for controlled substances. At 12 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of harassment in the 100 block of N. Chestnut St in Jefferson At 9:01 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of theft in the 1800 block of 195th St in Hardin Township.

Monday, June 7: At 1:49 am a deputy investigated drug paraphernalia that was left at a business in the 100 block of Hager St E. in Grand Junction. At 7:35 am a deputy investigated a complaint of harassment in the 700 block of 202nd St in Scranton Township. At 7:43 am two deputies, Iowa State Patrol, Greene County Ambulance and Jefferson fire department responded to single vehicle rollover accident in the 1700 block of E-53 west of Jefferson. A 14-year-old female driver rolled a 2008 Ford F150 pickup truck. The vehicle is a total loss. The Iowa State Patrol is investigating the accident.  At 10:33 am a deputy investigated a complaint of theft in the 700 block of 202nd St in Bristol Township. At 11:40 am a deputy investigated a reported stolen vehicle in the 1900 block of 140th St in Dawson Township. At 3:58 pm a deputy is investigated a complaint of theft in the 400 block of Main St E. in Grand Junction.

Sunday, June 7: At 4:59 am a deputy responded to the 600 block of 15th St S. in Grand Junction for a complaint of trespass. At 8:14 am a deputy responded to a complaint of theft complaint in the 800 block of Main St E. in Grand Junction.

Saturday, June 6: At 6:23 am a deputy performed a traffic stop on Percival St and 18th St N. in Grand Junction. The driver, Benito Ortiz, was arrested for driving while license barred*. At 4:42 pm a deputy responded to the 1100 block of Lincoln St in Scranton for a complaint of criminal mischief. At 5:45 pm a deputy was advised of a vehicle near the railroad tracks in the 1400 block of 225th St in Jackson Township. The deputy had assistance from the Jefferson police department in locating the vehicle. There were two juveniles with the vehicle; they were cited for trespassing.  At 7:49 pm a deputy responded to a single vehicle motorcycle accident in the 1400 block of Q Ave in Grant Township. Ronald Bower, 62, of Waukee lost control of his 2002 Suzuki VL800. There was $6,000 in estimated damage to the motorcycle. At 9:50 pm a deputy responded to the 700 block of Railroad St E. in Grand Junction for a report of a fire. The fire was a controlled burn. At 11:41 pm a deputy responded to the 900 block of Highway 30 west of Jefferson for a violation of no contact order.

Friday, June 4: At 12:44 am a deputy investigated a complaint of harassment in the 600 block of Main St W in Grand Junction. At 3:40 am a deputy investigated a complaint of harassment in the 800 block of Percival St in Grand Junction. At 6:33 am the sheriff, a deputy, Iowa State Patrol, Greene County Ambulance, and Jefferson fire responded to a single-vehicle fatal accident on J Avenue near County Road E-63 (330th St). The Iowa State Patrol is investigating the accident. At 7:57 am a deputy investigated a complaint of criminal mischief in the 600 block of 15th St S in Grand Junction.

Thursday, June 3: At 1:44 pm a deputy removed a deer from the roadway on Highway 30 and L Ave west of Jefferson. At 3:39 pm a deputy investigated a theft in the 1900 block of 130th St in Paton. At 4:30 pm a deputy investigated a two-vehicle accident on 16th St in Grand Junction. Both parties had left the scene before the deputy arrived. At 8:09 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of harassment in the 600 block of South 15th St S in Grand Junction.

Wednesday, June 2: At 2:07 am a deputy investigated a theft in the 1900 block of 130th Street in Paton. At 8:50 am a deputy arrested David Tibben, 37, of Scranton on arrest warrants out of Pottawattamie County for theft- second degree*. At 9:21 am a deputy arrested Chad Prichard, 39, of Arcadia on a Carroll County arrest warrant for a controlled substance violation*. At 3:37 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of criminal mischief in the 700 block of North St in Churdan. At 11:53 pm a deputy investigated a car-deer accident on County Road E-63 (330thSt) and Highway 4. Tracy Bosshart, 57, of Jefferson struck a deer with a 2017 Subaru Forester, causing an estimated $8,000 damage to the vehicle.

Tuesday, June 1: At 11:44 am the sheriff, a deputy, Grand Junction fire, Jefferson fire, Scranton fire, Paton fire, and Greene County Ambulance responded to a large tire fire at Neese Inc in Grand Junction. There were no injuries. Fire crews were at the scene until approximately 5 pm. At 5:04 pm a deputy assisted with a unruly child in Churdan.

*In all cases when a defendant has been charged, this is merely an accusation, and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
