Following are excerpts of activities reported by the Jefferson police department:
Wednesday, June 30: At 1:48 am officers were called to a residence in the 600 block of W. State St for an assault occurring there. The officer met with a female victim, who had injuries from the alleged assault. A male had already left the residence before the officers’ arrival. The investigation led to the arrest of Anthony James Peterson, 31, of Jefferson for domestic abuse assault– serious and willful injury causing serious injury (class C felony)*. At 8:43 pm a traffic stop at Highway 30 and Doreen Wilber Drive resulted in the arrest of Michael Lee Eastman, 47, of Jefferson for driving while license barred (aggravated misdemeanor)*.
Tuesday, June 29: At 11:12 am a complainant reported receiving a threatening e-mail advising her computer had been hacked. The officer is investigating. At 6:43 pm a caller reported fireworks being set off at a residence in the 600 block of W. South St. The officer spoke to the resident and advised city ordinance prohibits fireworks within the city limits without a permit. At 8:11 pm an officer arrested a person wanted on a Boone County warrant in her vehicle parked at Wild Rose Casino. Heather Lorraine Swanson, 47, of Ogden was wanted on a charge of possession of offensive weapon by felon*. She was taken to the LEC to be transferred to Boone County.
Monday, June 28: At 7:46 am a complainant reported a truck camper was parked near the dugouts at the Jefferson softball complex in the 900 block of E. Lincoln Way. The vehicle was plugged into an electrical outlet at the complex. The officer spoke to the male subject from Texas and advised him he could not camp there. He left the area. At 12:51 pm a complainant reported the theft of credits on a slot machine at Wild Rose Casino. She had leaned a chair against the machine and left for several minutes. Someone came along and put credits in the machine and played out the credits, including hers. The officer is investigating. At 3:24 pm a caller advised of two vehicles parked at Henderson Park, and the caller advised the occupants were smoking marijuana. The officer located the two vehicles and spoke to two male subjects. The officer’s investigation led to the arrest of Carter Eugene Fetters, 70, of Jefferson for possession of controlled substance- third or subsequent offense/marijuana (aggravated misdemeanor) and possession of drug paraphernalia (simple misdemeanor)*.

Saturday, June 26: At 12:09 am a complainant reported a stray cat in the 400 block of Sundown Court. An officer was unable to catch the cat. At 4:35 pm a complainant reported fireworks being set off somewhere in the area of N. Olive St. An officer located the source of the fireworks and explained to the subject that city ordinance in regards to fireworks is different than state law, and that fireworks were not allowed in violation of the city ordinance. The subjects said they would stop setting them off. At 7:46 pm an officer went to a residence in the 200 block of N. Maple St in an attempt to speak to a subject about an ongoing investigation. While at the residence the officer saw a suspected controlled substance. The officer subsequently charged Sean Shell of Jefferson with possession of marijuana*, and requested a warrant for his arrest.
Friday, June 25: At 9:46 am a complainant reported a dog running at large in the 300 block of N. Oak St. An officer responded and located the dog. The owner was subsequently identified, and the dog was returned to its residence. The officer cited Robert Fuller of Jefferson for animals running at large. At 4:28 pm staff at Dollar General reported a shoplifter had been observed on a surveillance camera. The subject had left the store before an officer arrived. The officer is investigating. At 7:28 pm a traffic stop in the 500 block of N. Elm St resulted in an officer arresting Tyler Howell of Fort Dodge for driving while license barred*. At 8:35 pm the Jefferson PD, with assistance from the Greene County sheriff’s office and the Iowa State Patrol executed a search warrant for controlled substances at 301 -1/2 E. Lincoln Way. The search warrant was part of an ongoing investigation by the Jefferson PD. During the search warrant, suspected controlled substances and paraphernalia were located. Charges are pending the completion of the investigation and results from the DCI laboratory.
Thursday, June 24: At 3:17 pm city staff reported a possible vehicle collision near N. Chestnut and E. Adams Sts. An officer responded and determined that a collision had not occurred. There were a group of people who have had ongoing issues with each other arguing. The officer spoke to all involved and advised them if they continue to harass each other they could all be charged. At 9:11 pm an anonymous caller reported young children lighting fires in the 100 block of N. Cedar S in violation of a burn ban and city ordinance. An officer spoke to an adult female at the residence and advised her that open burning was not permitted at that time. *****An officer completed an investigation initiated 6/06 after a complaint that an adult male had physically assaulted a juvenile. The officer charged Joshua Rodgers of Jefferson with child endangerment – serious injury.* A warrant was requested for his arrest.
Wednesday, June 23: At 4:06 pm a complainant reported trespassing in the 700 block of W. Sunset Rd. An officer is investigating. At 6:42 pm staff at Dollar General reported a theft. Two subjects had gathered items within the store, went to the self-checkout, but did not pay for the items, valued at $148.57. The subjects left the store with the merchandise. The officer is investigating. ***** An officer completed an investigation that was started 6/15 after being called to HyVee in regards to a subject who had purchased alcoholic beverages for minors. Ian Graves of Jefferson was charged with supplying alcohol to persons under legal age*. A warrant for his arrest was requested.

Monday, June 21: At 5:18 pm a complainant reported a large snapping turtle on her porch. An officer caught the turtle and released it outside of town. At 9:36 pm an officer assisted the Greene County sheriff’s office with a traffic collision on Highway 30 east of Jefferson.
Sunday, June 20: At 11:41 am an anonymous caller reported “spikes sticking up” at the Cedar St railroad crossing. An officer confirmed the information and notified Union Pacific railroad. At 9:26 pm an anonymous female reported subjects driving recklessly and lighting firecrackers near the Greene County Middle School. An officer spoke to several individuals, but could not determine who was responsible for the driving issues or firecrackers.
Saturday, June 19: At 3:37 pm staff at Wild Rose Casino reported a subject on their property who had previously been banned from the property. The subject was gone upon the officer’s arrival. The situation will be handled by the Department of Criminal Investigations on-site agents. At 11:58 pm an officer was called to Wild Rose Casino in regards to a subject on the property who had previously signed a self-exclusion form that prohibited him from being in the casino. The officer charged William Griffin of Rippey with trespass (simple misdemeanor)*.
Friday, June 18: At 12:25 am a complainant reported being contacted by the other party in a no contact order. An officer is investigating. At 6:48 am a complainant reported a stray dog in the 200 block of E. Adams St. An officer transported the dog to the animal holding facility. At 9:21 am a complainant reported a brush pile on fire a short distance east of Jefferson on County Road E-53. An officer contacted the property owner and advised them there was a burn ban in effect. The property owner put the fire out. At 8:44 pm an anonymous caller reported a subject burning wood in the 300 block of E. Vest St. An officer located the fire and spoke to the subject at the location. The subject was unaware of the burn ban that was in place at that time, and extinguished the fire.
Thursday, June 17: At 12:37 pm an officer was dispatched to a residence in the 700 block of W. Harrison St for a report of a female in the area for whom there was an active Greene County arrest warrant. Gretta Halterman of Jefferson was arrested on the warrant for failure to appear to court*. At 8:29 pm an officer was dispatched to a residence in the 400 block of S. Elm St for a report of a juvenile male harassing a juvenile female. The officer made contact with both families and is investigating.
Wednesday, June 16: At 3:44 pm staff at Casey’s General Store reported receiving a counterfeit $10 bill from a customer. The officer is investigating. At 10:29 pm a complainant reported harassment on social media and that a juvenile male had just attempted to gain entry into her residence in the 400 block of S. Elm St. The officer has spoken to the juvenile male and juvenile charges are pending at this time.
Tuesday, June 15: At 1:26 pm an officer began investigating an unauthorized use of credit card at Tri County Lumber. At 6:07 pm a complainant reported witnessing a male subject purchase alcohol and give it to an underage person in the parking lot at HyVee. At 6:43 pm officers arrested Ian Scott Stucker, 22, of Minburn on numerous Guthrie County arrest warrants. At 9:03 pm officers checked the area of N. Chestnut and Clark Sts after dispatch received numerous 911 hang up calls from the area. The officers did not locate anyone needing assistance.
Monday, June 14: At 9:36 am a complainant reported reported receiving a call advising her Social Security number had been compromised. The complainant had already frozen her banking accounts before calling to advise the officer. The officer believes this to be a scam call attempting to gain personal information from the complainant. At 10:24 pm a complainant reported a possible fire in the 100 block of W. State St. Jefferson fire was sent to the area and determined it was coffee being roasted in the area causing the smoke and smell. All was fine.
Sunday, June 13: At 3:18 pm Wild Rose Casino staff reported a male subject there who had been trespassed from the business. The officer arrested Tyson Alan Jackson, 27, of Carroll for trespass (simple misdemeanor)*.
Saturday, June 12: At 8:01 am staff at Holiday RV reported the overnight theft of a pull camper. The camper belonged to a customer and was at the business for service work. The 2021 R.P.O. travel trailer is owned by Michael Eugene McInroy of Des Moines. The officer is investigating. At 12 pm a caller reported hearing gunshots near the 200 block of N. Oak St. The officer spoke to residents in the area, who advised it was fireworks going off. At 5:20 pm a caller advised he had a young boy on the downtown square who could not find his parents. The officer located the child’s parents and returned him to their care.
Friday, June 11: At 8:53 am an officer investigated a backing accident in the 300 block of Rushview Drive. Beth DeMoss of Jefferson was backing her 2012 Toyota Rav 4 from a private drive and struck a parked 2017 Jeep Cherokee owned by Jordan Aubrey of Jefferson. Demoss was cited for unsafe backing upon a highway. Damage to her vehicle was estimated at $1,500. Damage to Aubrey’s vehicle was estimated at $2,000. At 9:23 am a complainant reported a possible rattlesnake in his driveway in the 1200 block of Rush Ridge Rd. The officer removed the bull-snake from the property. At 8:58 pm an officer arrested Carl Maurice Krieger, 28, of Jefferson during a traffic stop. He was charged with driving while license revoked*.
Thursday, June 10: At 11:39 am staff at Home State Bank reported a possible theft. A customer deposited a check and then withdrew cash from the account, and the check is fraudulent. At 6:37 pm staff at Sparky’s One Stop reported the driver of a tractor-trailer rig had left without paying for $313 in diesel fuel. The officer is investigating. At 7:24 pm a complainant reported an accident involving a motorcycle and a vehicle at N. Elm and W. Washington Sts. The driver of a vehicle pulled onto Elm St in front of the motorcyclist, causing the motorcyclist to lay the bike on its side. Both drivers left the accident scene before officers arrived. The officer is working to locate the motorcycle operator to gather further information about the accident. At 10:25 pm an officer assisted the Jefferson fire department at a vehicle fire at 104 N. Cedar St. The 2008 Ford F150 suffered extensive damage to the engine compartment. *****An officer has completed an investigation that began on 6/04 after a subject placed an empty envelope in the Home State Bank ATM and then, a few minutes later, removed funds from the account at the ATM. The officer has requested an arrest warrant for Rodney C Sheffield, 34, of Des Moines for theft- fifth degree (simple misdemeanor)*.
Wednesday, June 9: At 11:25 am a complainant reported the theft of prescription medications and a debit card from a vehicle in the 400 block of N. Chestnut St. The officer is investigating. At 7:22 pm a male complainant reported a female subject came to his residence in the 300 block of N. High St and attempted to speak to him. There is an active no contact order between the two, with the female being the protected party. The officer is investigating.
Tuesday, June 8: At 3:13 pm an officer investigated a backing accident in the parking lot at Fareway. Christopher Sheldon of Ames was backing his 2103 Toyota Prius when he struck a passing 2012 Chevrolet Impala owned and operated by Blaine Robinson of Jefferson. Both vehicles had a reported $1,500 in damages. At 4:24 pm an officer arrested Nicole Terese Borkowski, 36, of Jefferson on a warrant for failure to appear on an original charge of child endangerment*.
Monday, June 7: At 10 am an officer was called to the 400 block of S. Vine St for an accident. Bill McDowell was operating a 2020 Peterbilt garbage truck, owned by the city of Jefferson when he struck a parked 2015 Toyota 4Runner owned by Dana Harrison of Jefferson. McDowell was attempting to pull to the curb to collect trash with the automatic arm on the truck. The garbage truck was not damaged. Harrison’s vehicle had a reported $5,000 in damages. A reminder to residents that parking, or placing other items near your garbage on the curb, makes it difficult for city workers to collect your garbage. Make sure they have clear access to the curb where you place your receptacle. At 6:03 pm Wild Rose security staff requested a welfare check on a female there. They advised she had lost the keys to her vehicle, and was sitting in the vehicle without air conditioning for several hours. They were concerned for her as it was extremely hot outside. Officers checked on the female and assisted in searching for her keys inside the vehicle, but did not locate them. Security staff arranged a room overnight at the Cobblestone Hotel for the female to get out of the heat and make arrangements for someone to come and get her. At 7:24 pm an off-duty officer witnessed a young driver in the alley in the 300 block of N. Locust St on 06/06, at about 4:14 pm. The young driver accelerated the vehicle, causing the wheels to spin and throw rocks into neighboring yards. The driver then squealed the vehicle’s tires as it entered the roadway at Washington St. The officer knew the young driver and later learned he has a school permit. The officer has issued Conrado O. Jaimes-Diaz of Jefferson citations for violation of a minor’s school permit and careless driving.
Sunday, June 6: At 9:30 am a complainant reported the theft of items from a residence in the 300 block of N. Chestnut St. She advised she has video footage of the theft and provided the officer with two suspects. The officer is waiting for a list of reported missing items and is investigating. At 3:31 pm an officer was called to a backing accident in the parking lot at the Greene County Community Center. Brian Burris of Scranton was backing a 2009 Chevrolet Malibu owned by Eric Burris when the vehicle struck a northbound 2019 Dodge Caravan owned by Enterprise FM Trust and operated by Rachel Haupert of Jefferson. Damage to the vehicles was minor. At 6:44 pm a complainant brought a stray dog to the LEC. The animal was wearing owner tags and was released to the owner with a verbal warning for animal at large. At 10:53 pm an officer removed a dead deer from the roadway at Highway 30 and Oakland Ave.
Saturday, June 5: At 8:50 am a complainant reported a stray dog in the 1000 block of W. Lincoln Way. The officer placed the dog in the animal holding facility. At 5:45 pm officers assisted a deputy with a vehicle reported to be on the train tracks east of Jefferson.
Friday, June 4: At 3:36 pm staff at Heartland Bank reported possible unauthorized use of a credit card for one of its customers. The card was used to access funds from ATMs in Jefferson. The officer is investigating. At 7:16 pm during a traffic stop in the 300 block of N. Elm St, an officer noticed signs of impairment from the male driver. A small child was in the vehicle at the time of the stop. The officer asked the male to perform standardized field sobriety tests. The officer arrested Luke James Blakeman, 28, of Boone and charged him with operating while intoxicated (serious misdemeanor), child endangerment (aggravated misdemeanor, and open container of alcohol in vehicle (simple misdemeanor)*. Arrangements were made for a family member to take the child from the scene. At 8:25 pm a complainant requested officers at a residence in the 500 block of N. Vine St for a domestic issue. Officers learned a male had left the residence after an argument and was possibly suicidal. It was reported the male had a firearm with him. The officer placed an attempt to locate on the subject’s vehicle to conduct a welfare check on him. On June 5 officers located the male in Jefferson. He was transported to ER for a medical evaluation.
Thursday, June 3: At 1:06 pm an officer investigated a backing accident in the 100 block of E. State St. Ilse Hooper of Jefferson attempted to back a 2001 Dodge Ram pickup truck owned by Luann Hooper from a parking space but turned too sharply. She struck a 2017 Mazda CX-5 parked in the adjacent space. Hooper was cited for fail to maintain control. Damage to the Mazda, which is owned by Sharon Richardson of Coon Rapids was estimated at $3,500. Damage to the pickup truck was estimated at $800. At 4:01 pm an officer located two subjects pushing a grocery cart on the road near the Jefferson Municipal Airport on 235th St. The officer learned the couple’s vehicle had broken down and they took the cart to walk home with their groceries, with the plan to return the cart. Another subject stopped and offered to drive the couple home and return the cart to HyVee. At 6:45 pm a complainant reported the theft of $70 from her wallet at a residence in the 700 block of W. Harrison St. The officer is investigating. At 9:13 pm a complainant reported as she walked her dog in the 200 block of N. Cedar St, another dog approached her animal, attempting to bite it. The officer located the owner of the animal and issued Joshua Medina a citation for animal at large prohibited.
Wednesday, June 2: At 8:14 am a Humboldt PD officer contacted a Jefferson officer about an unauthorized use of a credit card. A male subject had used a Humboldt resident’s card at HyVee in Jefferson. A suspect was provided to the Jefferson officer. The amount of the transaction was $17.15. The officer is investigating. At 5:26 pm staff at the Jefferson Vet Clinic advised of a stray dog that had been picked up. The officer placed the dog in the animal holding facility.
Tuesday, June 1: At 1:08 an officer checked on an occupied vehicle parked after hours at A & W Family Restaurant. The subject advised the vehicle would not start, but he was working on it. The officer learned there was an outstanding warrant from Ames for the male. However, extradition was for counties contiguous only to Story County. The officer advised the male of the warrant for his arrest and advised him to go to Ames and take care of it. At 11:19 am a complainant advised of an abandoned bicycle at S. Maple and Park Sts. The officer placed the bike in the impound lot. At 12:01 pm an officer checked on a driver parked on the shoulder of the roadway near the intersection of Highways 4 and 30. The driver had pulled over to use his phone. No assistance was needed.
