Police blotter – May 2021

Following are excerpts of activities reported by the Jefferson police department:

Monday, May 31: At 9:23 am an officer investigated a backing accident in the private parking lot at Casey’s General Store. Parker Lehman of Dana was backing a 2009 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck owned by Lindy Lehman when he struck a parked 2003 Chevrolet Tahoe owned by Jeffrey Mitchell of Greenfield. Damage to the Tahoe was estimated at $2,000. Damage to the pickup truck was estimated at $750.

Sunday, May 30: At 9:30 pm a traffic stop near the intersection of S. Elm and Bracket Sts resulted in Gary Pruter of Bayard being issued a written warning for failure to obey stop sign. During the course of the stop the officer asked for consent to search the vehicle. This was granted and a suspected drug related item was located. The item was taken to the Greene County LEC. The officer is investigating. At 10:12 pm a complainant reported two vehicles being driven carelessly on N. Cedar St southbound. He reported one of the drivers appeared to be chasing the other. The officer was able to locate one of the two suspect vehicles near the intersection of E. Russell St and S. Grimmell Rd. The officer preformed a traffic stop on the vehicle and spoke with the male juvenile driver. He reported an unknown vehicle had been chasing him and his poor driving was due to his fear. The juvenile was issued a verbal warning for failure to obey a stop sign and the stop was ended. The other vehicle involved was not identified. At 11:56 pm while on patrol an officer located three vehicles stopped in the 200 block of E. State St. The occupants of the vehicles appeared to be having a verbal argument and the officer stopped to investigate. The officer was told two of the drivers had been involved in a disagreement over the way they were driving. The vehicles stopped in the 200 block of E. State St, joined soon by the third vehicle operated by the parents of one of the vehicle’s juvenile operator.  After speaking with the three drivers, two were allowed to leave. The third driver, Joshua Solano of Guthrie Center, showed signs of possible impairment. A separate office arrived and performed tests to determine if he was impaired. Solano passed these tests. The officer asked Solano for consent to search the vehicle; this was granted. A suspected illegal controlled substance was located during this search and collected into evidence. The officer is investigating; further action is pending chemical testing of the substance. 

Saturday, May 29: At 1:15 pm an Officer investigated a two-vehicle accident in the HyVee parking lot. Sandra Burris of Scranton was westbound in the lot attempting to park her 2011 Dodge Nitro. A 2012 Chevrolet Silverado was parked in the lot with owner Laureen Grow opening the driver side door. While parking the passenger side bumper of the Nitro contacted the Silverado’s driver side door. The Nitro received approximately $500 in damage. The Silverado received approximately $200 in damage. At 1:59 pm an officer investigated a two-vehicle accident at the intersection of W. Clark and N. Vine Sts. Rochelle Mitchels of Rippey was eastbound on Clark St driving a 2015 Chevrolet Trax. Mary Jane Sorenson of Jefferson was southbound on Vine St driving a 2009 Chevrolet Impala. The vehicles collided in the intersection. Damage to Mitchels’ vehicle was estimated at $1,500. Damage to Sorenson’s vehicle was estimated at $4,000.

Friday, May 28: At 10:34 am a complainant reported seeing smoke coming from the Soy-Chlor plant at 1301 N. Locust St. The officer investigated and found the source was the normal exhaust coming from the plant. At 7:12 pm a caller reported he was being blackmailed online by another party who claimed to have compromising images of them. The person claimed the images would be distributed unless money was sent. The officer advised nothing could be done, but to block the subject on all social media accounts. At 9:17 pm an officer was called to the Webb House at 401 S. Wilson Ave. A minor female retuned to the Webb House after leaving. The female reported she had been involved in an argument with an adult family member who she suspected was intoxicated. During the course of this, the minor exited the car she was in with them and returned to the Webb House. An officer responded and transported the minor female to the Greene County Law Enforcement Center. While at the LEC, several family members were contacted and the minor female was found a safe location to go to. The officer is investigation the situation.

Thursday, May 27: At 12:44 pm a deputy requested assistance from an officer at the. Jefferson Veterinary Clinic. A caller had located an injured dog in the ditch but could not get near the animal. The deputy transported the dog to the vet clinic. At. 4:22 pm a DHS caseworker opened a sex assault case and the officer is now assisting. The alleged event occurred in Jefferson in the recent past and involved two young female juveniles. At 10:13 pm a complainant reported he could see something burning near Highway 30 and Mulberry St. The officer determined it was smoldering corn at Landus Coop. Personnel are on scene 24 hours a day monitoring the fire.

Wednesday, May 26: At 6:52 am staff at Oly’s Corner reported a male subject dropped his wallet in the restroom and noticed later it was missing. He located the wallet in the restroom and $200 cash was missing from the wallet. The business provided the officer with video of two male subjects, who were the only two people to use the restroom. The officer is investigating. At 10:22 am staff at Subway advised they had located a large bag of empty prescription medication bottles in their dumpster. The officer learned staff at Medicap Pharmacy placed a bag of empty bottles outside for recycling. The officer believed someone grabbed the bag of bottles at Medicap, figured out they were empty, and threw them in the Subway dumpster. At 11:19 am a complainant advised she had a dog in her vehicle she had picked up wandering around. The officer met her and placed the dog in the animal holding facility. At 3:14 pm a complainant spoke to an officer about mail she had received from Iowa Workforce Development claiming she had received unemployment benefits. She advised she had not received the benefits and had called Iowa Workforce and advised them. They advised her to report it to law enforcement, so there would be documentation of it.

Tuesday, May 25: At 1:46 am a JPD officer assisted a sheriff’s deputy in responding to a 911 call in Scranton. At 4:04 a deputy requested the officer’s assistance at the same residence in Scranton. The officer assisted deputies when they arrived. Charges were handled by sheriff’s office. At 3:47 pm an officer assisted the Jefferson fire department with a reported fire in an attic at 603 Rushview Drive. The small fire was controlled by a firefighter on scene before the trucks arrived. Minimal damage had occurred. At 4:23 pm an officer investigated an accident in the 100 block of N. Locust St. Chelse Sanderson of Jefferson was southbound driving her 2018 Dodge Caravan. She struck a 2019 Ford Fusion parked in the angle parking near the Redemption Center. The parked vehicle was pushed into a parked 1990 Dodge Dakota. Sanderson was cited for failure to maintain control. Damage to her vehicle was estimated at $2,000. Both parked vehicles are owned by Janie Scheuermann of Jefferson. Damage to the Fusion was estimated at $8,000. Damage to the Dakota was estimated at $1,000.

Monday, May 24: At 12:55 pm staff at Greene County High School advised a 17-year-old female  was caught with a nearly empty bottle of alcohol and vaping products at the school. The officer has sent charges to the juvenile court for possession of alcohol under legal age* and she was cited for person under age 21 using vaping products. She was suspended from school and will face other disciplinary action there. At 2:58 pm a complainant reported a female had approached her vehicle and assaulted a male passenger through the window. The complainant and a group of friends had located the vehicle involved and were taking photos of the registration plate to report the assault to law enforcement when  subjects approached and threw rocks at them. They left the area and came to the LEC. The officer is investigating the reported event. At 11:48 pm a complainant reported a possible violation of a protective order that had occurred in early May. The officer is investigating.

Sunday, May 23: At 12:07 am officers assisted the Jefferson fire department in responding to a fire alarm activation at the Cobblestone Inn. No fire was located and it was determined to be a false alarm. *****An officer completed an investigation that began on 2/22 at HyVee. A check was written to the store on a closed account of a deceased Boone County resident. Two arrest warrants have been requested for Joshua Kelly Uranga, 40, of Pilot Mound for forgery (Class D felony) and theftthird degree (aggravated misdemeanor)*. The check was written for $829.97.

Saturday, May 22: At 3:03 pm an officer investigated a backing accident in the 200 block of W. Russell St. Al Jensen of Jefferson was backing his 2007 Ford F-150 pickup truck from a private driveway when he struck a parked 2018 Nissan Altima owned by Mike Bravard of Jefferson. Damage to Jensen’s vehicle was estimated at $500. Damage to Bravard’s vehicle was estimated at $5,000. At 7:38 pm a complainant reported a golf cart in the parking lot at Fareway with open containers of alcohol aboard. The officer arrived as a couple exited the store and went to the cart. After speaking with the driver, the officer determined he had not been consuming the alcoholic beverages. The driver said they had drunk the containers’ contents at home the day before. A verbal warning was issued for open containers.

Friday, May 21: At 12:53 pm the manager of apartment in the 1200 block of Westwood Drive reported criminal mischief and theft from a coin-operted washing machine at the complex. The machine was damaged and coins were removed. Damage to repair the machine was estimated at $250. The officer is investigating. At 8:05 pm officers had a vehicle towed from Daubendiek Park. The vehicle had been parked there for several days. A contact number for the registered owner could not be found.

Thursday, May 20: At 3:55 pm staff at Ace Hardware requested an officer there. A customer had struck a light pole in the parking lot and left the scene. The pole received minor damage. Damage to the vehicle is unknown as the driver left the scene. The officer is investigating. At 7:57 pm a complainant reported harassment by neighbors in the 100 block of N. Walnut St. The officer is investigating. At 8:02 pm a complainant reported a group of juveniles on the roof of the former middle school. The officer located a group of youngsters in the area and sent them on their way. The group did not admit to being on the roof. At 10:28 pm a deputy requested assistance from on officer on 16th St in Grand Junction for an accident involving a motor vehicle and a train. The deputy handled all charges in the matter.

Wednesday, May 19: At 12:27 pm an officer investigated an accident at N. Elm and W. Adams Sts. Eric Eliserio of Jefferson was northbound on Elm driving his 2011 Hyundai Elantra. Isaac Overturf of Ogden turned in front of Eliserio, causing Eliserio to swerve and strike a pole on the side of the road. Overturn was cited for fail to yield upon left turn. His 2005 Chevrolet Uplander was not damaged, nor was the pole. Damage to Eliserio’s vehicle was estimated at $4,000.

Tuesday, May 18: At 8:10 am an officer investigated a rear end crash in the 1900 block of N. Grimmell Rd. A 2017 Jeep Cherokee, owned and operated by Ann Hicks of Scranton, was southbound on Grimmell Rd. Hicks stopped to wait for passing traffic and intended to turn left into the high school when a vehicle struck her from behind. The 2012 Ford Edge was owned by Mark Miller and operated by Jesse Miller of Scranton. The Hicks vehicle had a reported $2,500 in damage to the rear of the unit. The Miller vehicle suffered only minor damages. At 12:05 pm an officer was called to N. Elm and W. Clark St for a reported vehicle accident. One vehicle involved was a flag vehicle for a wide load semi. This subject had provided his information to the other driver, but left the scene to catch up with the load. The remaining driver on scene Marcus Michaelson, who was driving a car owned by Home State Bank. Michaelson advised both vehicles were northbound on Elm St. The flagger vehicle attempted to change lanes and struck his vehicle in the process. The Home State vehicle had a reported $1,500 in damages. The officer is working to gather more information from the other driver involved to complete the state accident form. At 9:22 pm a complainant reported a dog tied with a leash to a pole in the 200 block of W. Lincoln Way. The officer located the animal, which had no owner information on its tag. The dog was placed in the animal holding facility.

Monday, May 17: At 2:35 am a resident captured a stray dog at 505 W. Clark St. The officer placed the dog in the animal holding facility.

Sunday, May 16: Routine activity reported.

Saturday, May 15: At 6:28 pm Jefferson fire requested officers to close roads down in the area of the Landus Coop, as the fire had flared up in the facility. The facility suffered another explosion at about 6:45 pm. The roads remained closed overnight. At 11:32 pm a complainant requested an officer at Wild Rose Casino. The officer met with the complainant, who was upset that he had been asked by security staff to leave the casino. The officer spoke to security staff and learned the complainant could not return for eight hours due to his behavior. The officer advised the complainant and sent him on his way with a sober driver.

Friday, May 14: At 8:05 am officers responded to a grain dust explosion at Landus Coop at 1500 N. Mulberry St. Several agencies responded to the blast including Jefferson fire, Grand Junction fire, Scranton fire, Carroll fire, Greene County Ambulance, Iowa State Patrol, Carroll County sheriff’s office, and the state fire marshal’s office. The facility suffered catastrophic damages from the event. Roads were closed in the area for the event. There were no injuries. No hazardous materials were released or involved in the blast. At 8:55 am  the Iowa State Patrol investigated a two-vehicle personal injury accident at Highway 30 and Mulberry St.

Thursday, May 13: At 1:54 pm an officer investigated a reported accident at Greene County Medical Center. Janice Sande of Jefferson attempted to park her 2011 Subaru Forester in front of the building. Sande hit the accelerator instead of the brake. The vehicle struck the building, causing a reported $3,000 to the vehicle and the building. At 7:58 pm a complainant reported bags of trash along the road near Highways 4 and 30. The officer learned the trash was from a Ditch Walk and the DOT would remove the bags. At 10:16 pm an officer assisted a deputy with a search warrant execution on a vehicle in the impound lot.

Wednesday, May 12: At 8:08 am staff at Greene County middle school reported a stray dog at there. The officer placed the dog in the animal holding facility. At 1:39 pm a complainant reported an unauthorized use of her debit card at Casey’s General Store. A pizza was ordered online and picked up at the store. The officer is investigating. At 3:05 pm Pauline Hadley reported she had struck a No Parking sign in the 300 block of N. Vine St with her 2016 Chevrolet Impala. Damage to the vehicle was estimated at $1,500. Damage to the sign was estimated at $200. At 3:46 pm staff at Casey’s General Store reported a shoplifting event. A male put a $15.49 bottle of alcohol in his pocket and left with out paying for the item. The officer has identified the male and is requesting an arrest warrant. At 5:20 pm a complainant reported a theft of cash, keys and cell phones from a residence in the 500 block of N. Olive St. The officer is investigating.

Tuesday, May 11: At 1:31 am an officer performed a traffic stop with a speeding driver on Highway 30 near Flack Ave. During the interaction with the driver, the officer smelled the odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. During a probable cause search of the vehicle, the officer located suspected marijuana wax and a smoking device. The officer issued Noah Adam Bowen, 20 of Jefferson, a citation for excessive speed. The officer has requested arrest warrants for possession of controlled substance-marijuana (serious misdemeanor) and possession of drug paraphernalia (simple misdemeanor)*. At 2:59 pm a complainant reported the theft of a television and other items from a residence in the 200 block of N. Locust St. The officer is investigating. At 6:34 pm a complainant reported harassment by a neighbor in the 300 block of E. Lincoln Way. The officer is investigating.

Monday, May 10: At 2:45 pm an officer investigated a backing accident in the parking lot at Wells Fargo Bank. Shiena Hadley of Bagley was backing her 2016 Dodge 1500 when she struck a parked 2012 Chevrolet Equinox owned by Barbara Kendall of Jefferson. Damage to each vehicle was estimated at $1,000. At 8:14 pm staff at HyVee reported a stray German Shepherd in the in the parking lot. The officer placed the dog in the animal holding facility.  At 9:06 pm an officer responded to a car-deer accident on Highway 4 near 210th St north of Jefferson. Eliza Carlson of Jefferson was southbound driving a 2010 Toyota Corolla owned by Matt Carlson of Jefferson when she struck a deer in the roadway. Damage to the vehicle was estimated at $6,000; the vehicle was towed from the scene. At 10:43 pm staff at A & W Family Restaurant reported a couple sleeping in their car in the parking lot. The officer made contact with the couple and learned their vehicle had broken down and could not be moved. The officer spoke to local clergy and a Motel Room was paid for the evening by clergy.

Sunday, May 9: At 5:59 am staff at Greene County Medical Center emergency room requested an officer for a possible case of  child abuse. The officer arrived and learned the injury had occurred in Guthrie County. The Guthrie County sheriff’s office was forwarded the information gathered by the officer. At 9:24 pm a caller advised that Mark Haase was currently at a residence in the 500 block of N. Olive St and was wanted on a Boone County arrest warrant. Officers worked with the female resident to be allowed inside to search for Haase. Officers and deputies located him in an upstairs bedroom hiding in a compartment underneath a bed. He was arrested to be taken back to Boone county.

Saturday, May 8: At 3:03 am a complaint advised that she was driving around the Jefferson downtown square and her boyfriend was chasing her in his vehicle. She reported he had struck the rear of her vehicle numerous times, trying to get her to stop. During an interview, the officer determined the male subject had assaulted the complainant twice prior to this event. The officer has applied for two arrest warrants for Mark Douglas Haase, 34, of Ogden for domestic abuse assault causing bodily injury- second offense (aggravated misdemeanor)*. At 7:46 am a probation officer spoke to an officer and reported that Haase is on probation out of Boone County. He was wearing an ankle monitoring bracelet, but it appears it was removed. It was pinging near N. Cedar and  E. McKinley Sts. The officer went to the area and located the bracelet.

Friday, May 7: At 2:30 pm officers executed a search warrant at a residence in the 400 block of E. Washington St. Further evidence was gathered in a sex abuse case that began on 05/06.

Thursday, May 6: After completing a theft investigation into non-sufficient funds checks written at HyVee, an officer has requested arrest warrants for two females. An arrest warrant has been requested for Sarah Johanna McBurney, 39, of Fort Dodge for theft- third degree (aggravated misdemeanor)*.  McBurnie wrote five checks in March 2021 to HyVee totaling $1,024.01. An arrest warrant was requested for Hattie Sue Ball, 81, of Boone for theft- third degree*. Ball wrote a check to the business in February 2021 for $829.97. The store learned the account was closed when the check was returned. At 2:24 pm an officer investigated a sex assault case with a DHS case worker at a residence in the 400 block of E. Washington St. The case worker had been given social media posts of a female involved in sexual situations. Children were present in some of the videos. The investigation led to the arrest of Victoria Leigh Ann Gordon, 21, of Jefferson for indecent contact with a child (aggravated misdemeanor) and lascivious acts with a child (Class C felony)*.

Wednesday, May 5: At 8:48 pm R.A. Baxley Transportation requested an officer at 111 N. Chestnut St. The officer learned the company has vehicles and drivers all over the country. A vehicle, trailer, and a $20,000 hot tub had gone missing recently. The driver had ended contact with the company and the GPS locator had since been disabled on the vehicle. Baxley had spoken to officials in Ohio and West Virginia to look for the driver and the vehicle. The officer entered the vehicle and trailer into NCIC as a stolen motor vehicle.

Tuesday, May 4: At 1:20 pm a complainant requested officers at a residence in the 400 block of S. Locust St for a domestic situation. The officer’s investigation led to the arrest of Tashina Sue Taylor, 38, of Jefferson for domestic abuse assault (simple misdemeanor)*.  

Monday, May 3: At 1:05 pm a complainant reported a bike missing from the Little League complex on N. Pinet St. The bike had been left there for a period of time, but was now missing. At 7:36 pm an officer investigated a backing accident in the 800 block of W. Clark St. Teresa Renwanz of Jefferson was backing her 2012 GMC K2500 into the street when she struck a legally parked 2005 Pontiac Grand Prix owned by Analynn Baugh. Renwanz was cited for unsafe backing upon highway. Damage to her pickup truck was estimated at $500. Damage to Baugh’s vehicle was estimated at $2,500.

Sunday, May 2: At 12:33 am while on patrol an officer located a male subject standing near the door to HyVee. The store was closed at the time and the officer attempted to speak to the male. The male began walking away and would not speak to the officer. The officer requested assistance from deputies as the subject continued to walk northbound and would not speak to the officer. The officer and deputies caught up to the male near N. Locust and Reed St and approached him. The male became aggressive towards a deputy and the deputy deployed his Taser on the subject. Timothy Dale Sullivan, 42, of Jefferson was charged by the officer with public intoxication and interference with official acts (simple misdemeanors)*. At 11:03 am a resident caught a stray dog in the 1000 block of Westwood Drive. The officer placed the dog in the animal holding facility.

Saturday, May 1: At 2:34 pm a caller advised of a subject in the 700 block of W. Sunset Rd with an outdoor fire in the high winds. The officer spoke to the fire and he put the fire out. At 10:34 pm an officer located two subjects walking on the road near Highway 30 and N. Elm St. The advised they were walking home. The officer transported them home as they were walking in dark clothing.

*All charges are merely an accusation. All defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
