Axne visits local farm to learn and listen

U.S. Representative Cindy Axne visited a Deal family farm located northeast of Bagley Friday, April 9. The purpose of the visit was to gain knowledge on cover crops, sustainable ag practices and to hear the concerns of farm owners and operators.

Bill Frederick and James Holz, who own Iowa Cover Crops, shared their knowledge on the topic. Frederick farms the ground for Deal (known locally as the Cain farm). It is his cattle grazing in the field now, remaining until it is planted to soybeans. The animals have a healthy crop to eat.

Frederick explained their cover crop business was started to supplement farming but it has taken over as their primary job. Tammy Deal is passionate about soil conservation and sustainable agriculture, working with ISU Extension and WFAN (Women, Food and Agriculture Network). She understands the benefits of cover crops to farmers/owners.

Axne commented on the many opportunities in Iowa. She said she is glad to have former Iowa governor Tom Vilsack as Secretary of Agriculture in the Biden administration. She supports efforts to help young farmers and to find skilled workers for the state. ~courtesy of The Scranton Journal
