Ram girls end hoops season with 6-13 record

The Greene County girls basketball team picked up a final victory Feb. 9 in Saydel, defeating the Eagles 46-31. The final home game for the Rams was Feb. 8, ending in a 33-29 loss to Southeast Valley. 

GC entered post season Saturday in a Class 3A regional tournament game at Atlantic. The Trojans ran away with the victory 65-29.

The Rams finished the season with a record of 6-13. They were fifth in the Heart of Iowa Conference at 3-7. Roland-Story held the top spot at 11-0.

Five seniors played their last game in a Greene County uniform. They are Eliza Carlson, Brianna Osterson, Makala Kafer, Lily Muir and Sadie Wilson.

SEV 33 ~ Rams 29

Southeast Valley was up on the Rams 8-6 after one quarter of play and held a 12-10 advantage at halftime. A 9-0 run by Greene County to start the third period gave the Rams a 19-12 lead. The Jaguars chipped away at the margin while GC hit a dry spell that allowed SEV to tie the game at 21 when the period ended. The Jags outscored the Rams 12-8 in the fourth for a 33-29 victory.

Sadie Wilson had eight points to lead the Rams, followed by seven from Brianna Osterson, six by Makala Kafer and five from Brianna Habben. Habben pulled down 10 rebounds and Osterson grabbed nine caroms and five steals.

SEV made 12/34 field goals while the Rams hit 8/36. Both teams made two three-pointers. GC made 11/15 free throws while SEV hit 7/15. Greene County more than doubled the Jaguars’ rebounds 38-16 and turnovers 32-13.

Rams 46 ~ Saydel 31

Greene County ended the regular season with a 46-31 road win at Saydel. The Rams trailed 12-10 after one quarter but held the Eagles without a field goal in the second period and half of the third. They built a 23-14 halftime lead and were up 37-24 going into the final frame.

Kafer was the leading scorer with 11 points. Osterson chipped in nine, Habben eight, Eliza Carlson six and Wilson five.

The Rams made 21/55 field goals for 38 percent while Saydel hit 10/52 for 19 percent. Both teams made three treys and the Eagles sank eight freethrows. GC won the battle on the boards 45-30 but committed more turnovers than Saydel 20-12.

Atlantic 65 ~ Rams 29

Atlantic came out strong to take a 16-7 first quarter lead over Greene County in the opening round of Class 3A District Tournament action Saturday. They outscored the Rams 21-7 in the second period for a 37-14 halftime advantage. The Trojans continued to build on their lead, going up 57-23 at the end of the third quarter before scoring the victory 65-29.

Turnovers were an issue all season for the Rams and they continued Saturday as they turned the ball over 36 times, 24 in the first half. Atlantic had only 11 turnovers.
