Sheriff’s report – January 2021

Following are excerpts of activities reported by the Greene County sheriff’s office:

Sunday, Jan. 31: At 3:15 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of trespass in the 1400 block of County Road P-14 (J Ave) in Jackson Township.

Saturday, Jan. 30: At 1:30 am a deputy investigated a domestic assault in Paton. At 10:33 am a deputy removed a deer from the roadway in the 300 block of 330th St in Willow Township. At 9:58 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of trespass on Main St and 12th St in Grand Junction.

Friday, Jan. 29: At 5 am a deputy removed a deer from the roadway on Highway 30 and County Road P-14 (J Ave) west of Jefferson. At 7:32 pm a deputy assisted with dog that was struck by a car in the 1800 block of 195th St in Hardin Township. At 10:01 pm a deputy assisted the Boone County sheriff’s office with a pursuit on 110th St. The pursuit ended in Webster County on 370 St and Hayes Ave.

Thursday, Jan. 28: Routine activity reported.

Wednesday, Jan. 27: At 5:01 am a deputy investigated a domestic abuse assault in Grand Junction.  At 11:45 am a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD with traffic control for an accident on N. Elm St near W. Clark St. At 1:27 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of illegal hunting from the roadway on Highway 30 near Highway 25 at Scranton. At 5:01 pm a deputy investigated a theft in the 1000 block of Sandoe St E. in Grand Junction. At 6:55 pm a deputy, Scranton fire, and Greene County Ambulance responded to the Scranton Community Center for smoke and the smell of burning electrical wires. An exhaust fan was found to be overheated and shorted out.

Tuesday, Jan. 26: At 11:52 am a deputy investigated a suspicious vehicle in the 600 block of Hager St E in Grand Junction. At 5:07 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of snowmobiles being driven through yards in the 700 block of High St in Scranton.

Monday, Jan. 25: At 7:57 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of harassment in the 200 block of E. Anyer St in Dana.

Sunday, Jan. 24: At 7:06 pm a deputy investigated a fire on Quaker Ave near 290th St in Franklin Township that was found to be a controlled burn. At 8:31 pm a deputy investigated a domestic assault in Scranton.

Saturday, Jan. 23: At 2:10 am a deputy investigated a car in the ditch on County Road E-53 (235th St) west of S Ave. Kim Mentolaroc, 29, of Jefferson missed a curve and went into the ditch. Mentolaroc was arrested for operating while under the influence and possession or concealing a dangerous weapon while intoxicated*. His 2007 Cadillac Escalade was not damaged. At 2:50 pm a deputy assisted an Iowa State Patrolman on Highway 25 E near Highway 30 with the arrest of Martenaze Williamson, 29, of Carroll who is wanted out of Illinois for failure to appear. At 4:35 pm a deputy investigated a small ditch fire on 170th St near Q Ave in Hardin Township. At 8:13 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of trespass in the 100 block of W. Percival St in Rippey.

Friday, Jan. 22: Routine activity reported.

Thursday, Jan. 21: At 1:15 pm a deputy investigated a scam in the 700 block of Walnut St in Scranton.

Wednesday, Jan. 20: At 4:41 am a deputy attempted to stop a vehicle heading north out of Jefferson at 80 mph. The driver continued north on Highway 4, reaching speeds faster than 130 mph. The deputy discontinued the chase near 370th St and N Avenue in Webster County. The deputy was advised by a Webster County secondary roads plow that the vehicle was in the ditch about mile north on Baxter Ave and 360th St. Two Greene County deputies responded to the accident and found the vehicle had rolled several times in the ditch and was occupied by three juveniles. Calhoun County EMS, Farnhamville fire, and the Webster County sheriff’s office responded to the accident. All three occupants of the vehicle were injured and taken by ambulance with Trinity Regional Hospital in Fort Dodge. The ages were 16 to 17 years old. The vehicle owner, Ashlee Agan, 29, of Boone stated that they did have permission to have the car. The 2001 Honda Accord was totaled in the accident. Webster County sheriff’s office covered the accident. Suspected marijuana was found. The possible charges are as follows: felony eluding, operating a motor vehicle without owners’ consent, speed, reckless driving, possession of a controlled substance, and failure to obey traffic signals. All charges will be forwarded to the juvenile court officer. At 6:58 pm a deputy investigated a car partially in the ditch on Highway 144 near 150th St in Paton Township. Josie Rivera, 25, of Harcourt was arrest for operating while intoxicated- second offense and two counts of child endangerment*. She was also cited for failure to maintain control. At 11:57 pm a deputy investigated a domestic assault in Grand Junction.

Tuesday, Jan. 19: At 3:43 am a deputy investigated a domestic assault in Grand Junction. At 4:46 am a deputy investigated a single-vehicle accident on Highway 30 near E Ave at Scranton. Benjamin Ellingson, 36, of Jefferson lost control of a 2007 Ford Supercrew on a patch of ice and entered the ditch, hitting a fence. Damage to the truck was estimated at $8,000. Damage to the fence was estimated at $150.  At 1:40 pm a deputy, Scranton fire department, Jefferson fire department, and the Iowa State Patrol responded to a single-vehicle accident on Highway 30 and E Ave at Scranton. Derik Gonyier, 28, of Clinton was driving a 2000 Peterbilt tractor and trailer and lost control on a patch of ice. The semi and trailer were blocking Highway 30 and leaking diesel fuel from a punctured tank. The tanks were emptied into barrels. The Iowa State Patrol covered the accident. At 2:07 pm a deputy investigated a single-vehicle accident on Highway 30 near Eaton Ave east of Scranton. The vehicle was undamaged and the driver had left the scene. It appeared that the driver hit a patch of ice and built-up slush and snow and lost control. At 7:38 pm a deputy responded to a two-vehicle accident in the 1000 block of County Road N-65 (D Ave) in Kendrick Township. Bob Martin, 50, of Stratford was towing a vehicle out of the ditch with his emergency lights running and cable across the roadway hooked up to a vehicle that was in the ditch. Erich Palait, 55, of Scranton was driving a 2017 Honda Civic struck the cable, causing severe damage to the car. The van that was being towed belonged to deputy Brandon Turner, 33, of Scranton. Due a deputy sheriff’s personal vehicle being involved, the Carroll County sheriff’s office investigated the accident.

Monday, Jan. 18: At 6:11 am a deputy investigated a burglary in the 2200 block of 120th St in Paton Township. At 12:46 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of criminal mischief in the 600 block of Locust St in Scranton. At 5:31 pm a deputy investigated an assault in the 800 block of Hager St in Grand Junction.  At 8:39 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of harassment in the 1000 block of Grant St in Scranton.

Sunday, Jan. 17: At 7:45 am a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD with locating a patient from the medical center.

Saturday, Jan. 16: At 12:16 am a deputy investigated a domestic abuse assault in Rippey. At 8:50 am a deputy investigated a complaint of a snowmobiler going through yards on State St in Scranton. At 9:50 am a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD with an arrest. At 3:04 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of people pushing snow into the roadway on 330th St (no east-west location provided). At 9:43 pm a deputy removed a deer from the roadway on Highway 4 near 330th St in Franklin Township.

Friday, Jan. 15: At 8:50 am the sheriff investigated a complaint of a snowmobiler going through yards on State St in Scranton. At 3:41 pm a deputy picked up a bicycle that was on the railroad tracks on 16th St in Grand Junction. At 4:46 pm a deputy investigated a theft in the 100 block of 250th St in Scranton Township.

Wednesday, Jan. 13: At 9:59 am a deputy investigated an assault in the 1200 block of Pioneer Ave in Hardin Township. At 5:59 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of harassment in the 100 block of W Ave in Paton Township. At 7:30 pm a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD with an assault in the 500 block of S. Walnut St.

Tuesday, Jan. 12: At 2:39 am a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD in locating three individuals identified taking property in the 200 block of W. Head St.

Monday, Jan. 11: At 7:32 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of criminal mischief in the 300 block of Irving St in Scranton. At 8:27 pm a deputy investigated a burglary in the 500 block of Main St E in Grand Junction.

Sunday, Jan. 10: At 12:36 am a deputy arrested Andres Perez, 30, of Webster City for driving while license barred*. At 3:19 pm deputies assisted the Coon Rapids PD after a patrol car was stolen by a 14-year-old juvenile. The vehicle was located and pursued on Highway 141 where it was stopped with the used of stop sticks. The Dallas County sheriff’s office, Iowa State Patrol, Perry PD, Guthrie County sheriff’s office, and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources also assisted. At 5:35 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of poaching on A Ave near 190th St in Kendrick Township.

Saturday, Jan. 9: At 7:57 am a deputy investigated a complaint of animal neglect in the 1900 block of J Ave in Greenbrier Township. At 4:42 pm a deputy issued a salvage tag for a deer on 160th St near T Ave in Dawson Township. At 10:01 pm a deputy investigated an assault in the 300 block of 7th St in Grand Junction. At 10:13 pm a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD with a traffic stop on Grimmell Road near Highway 30.

Friday, Jan. 8: At 9:23 am a deputy assisted the Carroll County sheriff deputies with a search of residence in the 3300 block of 290th St in Washington Township.  At 3:16 pm a deputy investigated a phone scam in the 900 block of 110th St in Highland Township. At 6:03 pm a deputy arrested Conar Hornsby, 24, of Boone for arrest warrants for possession of a controlled substance- third or subsequent offense*. At 6:59 pm a deputy investigated a dog running at large in the 100 block of Howard St in Rippey.

Thursday, Jan. 7: At 6:24 pm a deputy investigated a car-deer accident on 290th St and Redwood Ave in Washington Township. Stephanie Baker, 28, of Jefferson struck a deer with a 2011 Toyota Sienna. Damage to the vehicle was estimated at $2,000.

Wednesday, Jan. 6: At 3:10 pm a deputy, Greene County Ambulance, and Scranton fire responded to a single-vehicle accident in the 1900 block of B Ave in Willow Township. A 16-year-old male (no name provided by the sheriff) was operating a 2007 Chevrolet Silverado when a rear tire brake locked up. The driver lost control of the vehicle, rolling it into the ditch. There were no injuries. Damage to the pickup truck was estimated at $10,000.

Tuesday, Jan. 5: At 5:33 pm the sheriff investigated a car-deer accident on Highway 30 near R Ave east of Jefferson. Rhonda Harding, 62, of Jefferson struck a deer with her 2016 Chrysler Town and Country minivan, causing an estimated $5,000 damage to the vehicle. At 5:43 pm the sheriff investigated a second accident at the same location involving the same deer. Jeanette Stoffa, 41, of Grand Junction moved to the shoulder of the roadway to evade a vehicle that was partially in her lane. She struck the deceased deer on the shoulder of the roadway, causing an estimated $3,000 damage to her 2018 Chevrolet Cruze.

Monday, Jan. 4: At 8:50 am a deputy investigated a complaint of harassment in the 1100 block of Lincoln St in Scranton. At 5:07 pm a deputy investigated a single-vehicle accident on County Road E-53 near J Ave west of Jefferson. A 16-year-old male (no name provided by the sheriff) fell asleep and entered the ditch and struck a telephone pole. There were no injuries. The 2007 Chevrolet Malibu was totaled in the accident. The damage to the telephone pole was estimated at $1,000. At 5:26 pm a deputy located a stolen vehicle out of Perry on 337th St near W Ave in Washington Township. The vehicle was towed to the Perry PD. At 6:17 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of illegal hunting on R Ave near Spring Lake.

Sunday, Jan. 3: At 9:23 am a deputy investigated a complaint of harassment in the 200 block of Cartwright St in Rippey.

Saturday, Jan. 2: At 12:07 pm a deputy and Grand Junction fire responded to a car fire at Elizabeth and 15th Sts in Grand Junction. Charles Kaufman, 56, of Perry was cited for no insurance and driving while license suspended. The 1994 Toyota Camry had smoke and fire damage estimated at $500. The cause of the fire is unknown. At 12:56 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of criminal mischief in the 900 block of 110th St in Dawson Township.

Friday, Jan. 1: At 2:40 am a deputy investigated a complaint of a dog running at large in the 300 block Hager St W in Grand Junction. At 1:29 pm a deputy assisted with putting a cow back in the fence on Highway 30 near A Ave in Kendrick Township.

*In all cases when a defendant has been charged, this is merely an accusation, and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
