Sheriff’s report – December 2020

Following are excerpts of activities reported by the Greene County sheriff’s office:

Thursday, Dec. 31: At 5:41 am a deputy received information that Jonathan Kennedy, 33, of Grand Junction was at Casey’s General Store in Grand Junction. Kennedy was wanted for burglary- second degree, theft- second degree, and two counts of possession of a controlled substance- third or subsequent offense*. Kennedy was located at Casey’s was found in possession of stolen property from Casey’s, along with suspected methamphetamines and marijuana. Kennedy was arrested on the warrants. Charges are pending for the controlled substances and stolen property that were on his person. At 9:06 pm a deputy and the departmental K-9 assisted a Jefferson PD officer on Highway 30 and N. Elm St with a free air search of a vehicle. Suspected marijuana and drug paraphernalia were located in the car. The driver was arrested for possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Wednesday, Dec. 30: Routine activity reported.

Tuesday, Dec. 29: At 12:14 am a deputy investigated a car-deer accident on Highway 30  near Orchard Ave east of Jefferson. Madison Eischeid, 21, of Manning struck a deer with a 2005 Lexus 330, causing an estimated $5,000 damage to the vehicle.

Monday, Dec. 28: At 12:14 pm a deputy investigated a fire in the 500 block of 230th St in Scranton Township. The fire was an unreported controlled burn. At 1:03 pm a deputy and an Iowa State trooper investigated a two-vehicle accident on Highway 144 at 150th St in Paton Township. William Richards, 45, of Coon Rapids was northbound on Highway 144 driving a 2001 Freightliner semi tractor-trailer. Thomas Dulaney, 40, of Dallas Center was southbound driving a 2007 Kenworth semi tractor-trailer. Richards didn’t see the approaching rig. He attempted to pass a slower northbound vehicle. He took evasive action and entered the ditch after making contact with the southbound rig. Richards was cited for unsafe passing. Damage to both trucks was estimated at $500. At 7:21 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of theft in the 200 block of 19th St S in Grand Junction.

Sunday, Dec. 27: At 3:34 am a deputy investigated a car-deer accident on Highway 30 near Oakland Ave east of Jefferson. The driver had left the scene and the deputy removed two deer from the roadway. At 10:17 pm a deputy investigated an assault that occurred in the 400 block of 4th St in Rippey.

Saturday, Dec. 26: At 2:56 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of careless driving in the 1100 block of Highway 30 west of Jefferson. Deividas Guinan, 29, of Des Moines was arrested for operating while under the influence and reckless driving*. He was also cited for driving while license suspended. At 7:17 pm a deputy assisted a jailer with an unruly inmate. At 11 pm a deputy, Grand Junction fire and Jefferson fire responded to a semi tractor fire in the 400 block of N. 18th St in Grand Junction. The tractor was a total loss and several trailers were also severely damaged.

Friday, Dec. 25: At 9:51 am a deputy investigated an assault that was found to have occurred in Jefferson. The case was turned over to the Jefferson PD. At 10:46 am a deputy investigated a no contact order violation in Churdan. At 7:40 pm a deputy investigated a single-vehicle accident on Highway 30 near Highway 144 at Grand Junction. Kimberly Crowdy, 50, of Boone struck an animal with her 2017 Toyota Corolla, causing an estimated $2,500 damage to the vehicle.

Thursday, Dec. 24: At 1:45 am a deputy, Jefferson PD, and Jefferson fire responded to a wood stove fire in a garage in the 400 block of N. Maple St. At 10:50 am the sheriff, a deputy and Paton fire responded to a two-vehicle crash on County Road P-33 (S Ave) and County Road E-26 (170th St) west of Dana. Norman Lee, 44, of Paton was southbound on P-33 driving a 2006 Chevrolet Pacifica when he failed to stop as posted. His vehicle was struck by Anthony Sims, 47, of Dana, whose direction of travel on E-26 was not provided. One person sustained minor injuries and was taken by private vehicle for medical attention. Lee was cited for failure to obey a stop sign. Damage to Lee’s Pacifica and Sims’ 2005 BMW 3251 exceeded value. At 3:13 pm a deputy removed a deer from the roadway in the 400 block of County Road E-19 (140th St) in Cedar Township.

Wednesday, Dec. 23: At 9:56 am a deputy removed a deer from the roadway on County Road N-65 (D Ave) near 150th St in Cedar Township. At 1:08 pm a deputy assisted DHS with an investigation in Grand Junction. From 6:25 to 11:30 pm the sheriff and deputies responded to 17 cars stranded in ditches around the county.

Tuesday, Dec. 22: At 8:33 am a deputy investigated a complaint of criminal mischief in the 1200 block of Main St Scranton. At 11:06 am a deputy investigated a single vehicle accident on Highway 30 and R Ave east of Jefferson. The passengers and the driver all fled from the scene. The departmental K-9 indicated on the car and a search warrant was later conducted on the vehicle. Suspected marijuana, methamphetamines, and drug paraphernalia were seized. This case is under investigation. At 1:57 pm a deputy attempted to stop a gold minivan on 222nd St and R Ave in Grant Township. The driver fled and was later stopped. Joe Blackmon, 43, of Jefferson was arrested for driving while barred*. Passenger Brandon Kious, 37, of Jefferson was also arrested on an active warrant for theft- second degree.* Kious was in possession of stolen property from several burglaries in Greene County. Charges are pending and the case is still under investigation. At 2:22 pm the sheriff observed Ryan Patterson, 40, of Jefferson at Casey’s General Store in Jefferson. There were active arrest warrants for Patterson. He fled on foot and the sheriff apprehended him in the 400 block of N. Maple St. Stolen property from several burglaries in Jefferson was located at the residence Patterson was arrested. Gilbert Montgomery, 64, of Jefferson was also arrested for interference with official acts*. The Jefferson PD is investigating the stolen property. At 5:14 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of criminal mischief in the 300 block of 4th St in Rippey. At 9:16 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of harassment in the 1900 block of County Road E-18 (130th St in Paton Township).

Monday, Dec. 21: At 12:20 pm a deputy assisted the Carroll PD with trying to locate on Highway 30 a semi tractor-trailer driver who was involved in an accident. At 7:11 pm a deputy investigated a domestic incident in Grand Junction. At 8:57 pm a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD with a domestic incident.

Sunday, Dec. 20: At 1:30 am a deputy assisted the Perry PD with trying to locate a vehicle involved in a hit and run accident in Perry.

Saturday, Dec. 19: At 5:12 am a deputy assisted a jailer with an unruly inmate. At 4:49 pm a deputy investigated complaint of illegal hunting in the 800 block of 270th St in Jackson Township.

Friday, Dec. 18: Routine activity reported.

Thursday, Dec. 17: At 2:17 pm a deputy removed debris from the roadway on County Road E-53 (240th St) and J Ave west of Jefferson. At 4:07 pm a deputy assisted a motorist who had lost his load on the Highway 30 overpass at Grand Junction. At 6:10 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of an injured cat in the 100 block of Hager St E in Grand Junction.

Wednesday, Dec. 16: At 11 am a deputy attempted to locate a reported stolen vehicle in the 300 block of 1st St in Rippey. At 3:24 pm a deputy removed tire debris from the roadway on Highway 30 near T Ave west of Grand Junction. At 5:41 pm a deputy removed construction debris from the roadway on Highway 4 near 305th St in Franklin Township.

Tuesday, Dec. 15: At 8 am a deputy investigated a complaint of trespass in the 900 block of Grant St in Scranton. At 4:42 pm a deputy investigated a two-vehicle accident on 210th St and Highway 30 west of Scranton. The Iowa State Patrol covered the accident. At 5:24 pm a deputy investigated a theft in the 400 block of E. Paton St in Paton. At 8:11 pm the sheriff, deputies, Grand Junction Rescue, and Greene County Ambulance responded to a hit-and-run truck vs pedestrian accident on North 16th St near Sandoe St in Grand Junction. The pedestrian was transported the Greene County Medical Center and then Life Flighted to Des Moines. The driver was located and the Iowa State Patrol are investigating the accident. At 10:58 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of trespass in the 2200 block of 120th St in Paton Township.

Monday, Dec. 14: At 8:48 am a deputy assisted with a semi that lost it trailer on Highway 144 at Dana. David Ensley, 67, of Ogden was operating a 2009 Mack tractor pulling a grain trailer when the trailer came unhooked blocked the intersection of at County Road E-26. The two were reconnected without injury or damage. At 10:02 am a deputy investigated a burglary in the 1000 block of Sandoe St E in Grand Junction. At 12:48 pm a deputy investigated a single-vehicle accident Highway 30 at Kirkwood Ave west of Jefferson. Denise Abernathy, 56, of Jefferson was eastbound when a large piece of ice came off the trailer of a westbound semi tractor-trailer rig. The ice went through the windshield of Abernathy’s 2018 Nissan Rogue, causing an estimated $500 in damage. Abernathy was not injured. The other driver continued on.  

Sunday, Dec. 13: At 4:29 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of illegal dumping in the 800 block of Locust St in Scranton.

Saturday, Dec. 12: At 7:44 am a deputy assisted a motorist who went into the ditch on 270th St and Highway 4 south of Jefferson. At 7:50 am a deputy assisted a motorist who went into the ditch on Highway 4 and County Road E-57 (290th St) in Franklin Township. At 7:26 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of harassment in the 500 block of S. Wise St in Paton.

Friday, Dec. 11: At 6:27 pm a deputy investigated a 911 hang up in the 500 block of W. State St in Jefferson.

Thursday, Dec. 10: At 10:20 am a deputy conducted a traffic stop on 320th St near W Ave in Washington Township. Randolph Glass, 54, of Rippey was arrested for driving while revoked for following a conviction for operating while intoxicated*.

Wednesday, Dec. 9: At 11:19 am a deputy investigated a dog bite in the 1000 block of Eagle St in Scranton. At 1:09 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of trespass in the 1000 block of W. Adams St in Jefferson.

Tuesday, Dec. 8: At 1:58 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of trespass on 260th St and C Ave in Scranton Township.

Monday, Dec. 7: Routine activity reported.

Sunday, Dec. 6: At 5:41 am a deputy investigated a single vehicle rollover accident in the 200 block of County Road E53 (240th St) in Scranton Township. Samantha Isabel Menjivar, 19, of Coon Rapids was westbound when a deer ran in front of her vehicle, causing her to lose control. Her 2013 Ford Edge rolled once and came to rest on its wheels. Menjivar was transported by Greene County Ambulance to Greene County Medical Center for possible injuries. Damage to the vehicle was estimated at $20,000. The Scranton fire department assisted at the scene. At 10:12 am a deputy investigated a complaint of harassment in the 900 block of Hager St E in Grand Junction At 11:19 am a deputy investigated a complaint of a burglary in the 400 block of 15th St S in Grand Junction. At 8:38 pm a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD with a domestic disturbance call.

Saturday, Dec. 5: At 8:19 am a deputy and Greene County Ambulance assisted Carroll County personnel with an accident in the 400 block of Zephyr Ave. At 11:08 am a deputy assisted with an eluding driver originating from Calhoun County. The driver was later apprehended in Webster County. At 10:19 pm a deputy assisted the Dallas County sheriff’s office with a burglary call.

Friday, Dec. 4: At 7:42 am a deputy and the Paton fire department responded to a residential fire in the 400 block of E. Paton St in Paton.

Thursday, Dec. 3: At 5:40 pm a deputy investigated a car-deer accident in the 1500 block of Q Ave in Junction Township. Kristi Holz, 62, of Jefferson struck a deer with a 2009 Chevrolet Traverse, causing an estimated $5,000 damage to the vehicle.

Wednesday, Dec. 2: Routine activity reported.

Tuesday, Dec. 1: At 10:58 am a deputy investigated a violation of a no contact order in the 1900 block of 130th St in Paton Township. At 1:23 pm a deputy investigated a burglary in the 200 block of Main St in Rippey.

*In all cases when a defendant has been charged, this is merely an accusation, and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
