Sheriff’s report, January 2020

Following are excerpts of activities reported by the Greene County sheriff’s office:

Friday, Jan. 31: At 11:28 am a deputy investigated a two-vehicle accident in the 1100 block of 245th St in Jackson Township. Tracy Deal, 36, of Jefferson was eastbound on driving a 2014 Chrysler Town and County minivan when Gene Haman, 72, of Jefferson pulled out of a driveway and struck her vehicle with his 2005 Chevrolet Silverado. There were no injuries. Haman was cited for failure to yield upon entering a through highway.

Damage to his pickup truck was estimated at $1,500. Damage to Deal’s minivan was estimated at $2,500. At 12:11 pm a deputy investigated a burglary in the 1100 block of Lincoln St in Scranton. At 6:17 pm a deputy investigated a car-deer accident on A Ave (Carroll/Greene County line) near Highway 30. The vehicle was not in the area when the deputy arrived.

Thursday, Jan. 30: Routine activity reported.

Wednesday, Jan. 29: At 8:53 am a deputy picked up a white female dog in the 2200 block of Neola Ave and took it to the animal holding facility.

Tuesday, Jan. 28: At 8:36 am a deputy assisted the Perry PD with an assault investigation in Rippey. At 12:07 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of criminal mischief in the 1000 block of E. Railroad St in Grand Junction. At 3:08 pm a deputy attempted to locate a dog running at large on County Road P-14 (J Ave) near Highway 30. At 3:30 pm a deputy investigated a violation of a no contact order by an inmate. At 7:24 pm a deputy attempted to locate a dog running at large on County Road E-53 (240th St) near G Ave in Jackson Township.

Monday, Jan. 27: At 5:43 am the sheriff, deputies and JPD officers attempted to locate a wanted person for the Ames PD. The individual was westbound on Highway 30.

Sunday, Jan. 26: At 9:03 am a deputy, Jefferson PD, and the Jefferson fire department responded to a vehicle fire in the 1200 block of Rushridge Road in Jefferson. At 2:01 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of a stolen car in the Grand Junction area. At 2:29 pm a deputy picked up two dogs running at large on 130th Street near R Ave in Dawson Township. The deputy took the border collie and the Jack Russell terrier to PAWS.

Saturday, Jan. 25: At 12:08 pm a deputy assisted with a cow out in the 1800 block of County Road E-26 (170th St) in Hardin Township. At 12:38 pm a deputy investigated a harassment complaint in Grand Junction.

Friday, Jan. 24: At 7:58 am a deputy dispatched a deer with a broken leg that was stuck in a fence in the 600 block of Hills Ave in Churdan. At 6:02 pm a deputy investigated a domestic assault in Grand Junction. Brett Roberts, 26, of Grand Junction was arrested for domestic abuse assault- first offense*.

Thursday, Jan. 23: At 5e:46 am a deputy investigated a single-vehicle rollover accident on Highway 25 at County Road E-63 (330th St) in Willow Township. Jeffrey Thomas, 32, of Coon Rapids lost control of his 2009 Chevrolet Impala and rolled into the east ditch. Thomas was not injured. Damage to his vehicle was estimated at $1,000. At 1:29 pm deputies, the Jefferson and Scranton fire departments, and Greene County Ambulance responded to a house fire in the 1100 block of L Ave in Bristol Township. The structure was vacant. It was severely damaged in the fire.  At 2:07 pm a deputy investigated a dog complaint in the 1400 block of 160th St in Highland Township. At 2:58 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of harassment in the 1800 block of County Road E-53 (235th St) in Grant Township. At 3:34 pm a deputy assisted with livestock out in the 1800 block of E-53 in Grant Township. At 8:25 pm a deputy investigated a theft in the 300 block of S. 7th St in Grand Junction.

Wednesday, Jan. 22: At 1:14 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of theft in the 300 block of P Ave in Dawson Township. At 3:35 pm a deputy investigated a single-vehicle accident on 270th St at Redwood Ave in Grant Township. A driver lost control of a 2018 Chevrolet Equinox owned by Joyce Davis 70 of Jamaica. The driver struck a wooden post with enough force that both airbags deployed. The driver left the scene, and two separate people are claiming to be the driver. The accident is under investigation. At 5:35 pm, 6;02 pm and 6:30 pm deputies assisted motorists who entered the ditch due to slush-covered road conditions.

Tuesday, Jan. 21: At 9:13 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of fireworks or gun shots in the 800 block of E. Main St in Grand Junction.

Monday, Jan. 20: At 2:49 pm a deputy investigated a 2-vehicle accident on Highway 30 and B Ave west of Scranton. Andrew Montag, 30, of West Bend was stopped on Highway 30 waiting to turn onto B Ave in his 2000 Kenworth semi tractor-trailer. Leslie Mills, 44, of Boone was also eastbound on Highway 30 and did not see Montag stopped and rear ended the trailer. Mills was driving a 2012 International semi-tractor and trailer. There were no injuries. Mills’ tractor sustained an estimated $2,500 in damage. Montag’s trailer sustained an estimated $2,500 dollars damage.

Sunday, Jan. 19: Between 9:51 am and 8:37 pm sheriff’s personnel assisted three motorists and assisted with two ambulance calls.

Saturday, Jan. 18: Between 6:33 am and 4:59 pm sheriff’s office personnel responded to four motorists in the ditch due to road conditions. They were all on north-south roads. At 2:02 pm a deputy investigated a fraud complaint in the 300 block of Main St in Rippey.

Friday, Jan. 17: At 5:36 pm a deputy assisted a motorist that went into the ditch due to road conditions on Highway 30 near Orchard Ave east of Jefferson. At 7:35 pm a deputy investigated a vehicle in the ditch on 222nd St near W Ave east of Grand Junction. The driver was no longer with the vehicle.

Thursday, Jan. 16: At 2:30 pm deputies assisted the Iowa Department of Natural Resources with executing a search warrant in the 300 block of 150th St in Cedar Township. Hunting equipment was seized.

Wednesday, Jan. 15: At 6:58 am a deputy investigated a single- vehicle accident on Highway 25 just south of County Road E-63 (320th St) in Willow Township. William Wiederien, 67, of Carroll was northbound when and hit some ice and lost control of his semi-tractor and trailer and entered the ditch. The trailer rolled onto its side causing severe damage. An Iowa State Trooper covered the accident report. At 9:43 am the sheriff and deputies assisted the Iowa Department of Natural Resources with executing a search warrant at 602 North St in Churdan. Various hunting equipment, deer meat, and antlers were seized. At 2:53 pm a deputy investigated a single-vehicle accident on 240th St (no other location given). Kaylie Lehnhoff, 16, of Scranton lost control of a 2005 Chevy Trailblazer on the icy roadway. The vehicle entered the ditch. There was no damage to the vehicle and no injuries. At 4:57 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of criminal mischief in the 200 block of W. Hager St in Grand Junction. At 5:01 pm a deputy investigated a single-vehicle accident on County Road N-65 (D Ave) near 110th St in Cedar Township. Cole Race, 25, of Clarinda was southbound and lost control on the icy roadway. He entered the east ditch and struck a utility pole, causing the power lines to fall on the roadway. Race was not injured. Damage to his 2014 Dodge Caravan was estimated at $5,000. Midland Power staff estimated the damage to the power lines and pole at $5,000. Lohrville Fire department assisted with traffic control.

Tuesday, Jan. 14: At 7:58 pm a deputy investigated a single-vehicle accident in the 100 block of Sunset St in Grand Junction. Candice Ortiz, 33, of Bayard struck four mailboxes with her 1993 Dodge Dakota. Ortiz was not injured in the accident but did have another medical emergency and was later taken to the Greene County Medical Center emergency room by Greene County Ambulance. Arrest warrants have been requested for Ortiz for operating while intoxicated, driving while license barred, and criminal mischief- fifth degree (three counts). three counts of criminal mischief 5th degree*.

Monday, Jan. 13: At 5:48 am a deputy investigated a single vehicle accident in the 1800 block of County Road P-46 (W Ave) in Junction Township. Matthew Kinney, 29, of Rippey lost control of his 2006 Ford F150 and entered the ditch. There was no visible damage to the truck. Road conditions were a contributing factor.

Sunday, Jan. 12: At 1:25 am a deputy assisted the Webster County sheriff’s office with trying to locate suspects in the 200 block of Main St in Paton. At 6:16 am a deputy investigated a complaint of theft in the 800 block of E. Hager St in Grand Junction. At 10:15 am a deputy investigated a complaint of criminal mischief in the 300 block of O Ave in Dawson Township. At 3:29 pm a deputy investigated a theft in the 500 block of E. Main St in Grand Junction.

Saturday, Jan. 11: At 4:03 pm a deputy investigated a single-vehicle accident on 17th and Railroad Sts in Grand Junction. Michelle Christian, 34, of Grand Junction backed into a transformer with her 2002 Saturn SL1. She then left the scene of the accident that caused an estimated $4,000 damage to the transformer. This is still under investigation. At 4:04 pm a deputy arrested Adam Harvey, 43, of Grand Junction for possession of marijuana and possession of methamphetamine (serious misdemeanors) and possession of drug paraphernalia (simple misdemeanor)*.

Friday, Jan. 10: At 6:14 am a deputy investigated a car-deer accident on Highway 30 near W Ave east of Grand Junction. Jarod Tripp, 34, of Iowa Falls struck a deer with a 2016 Dodge Ram pickup truck, causing an estimated $500 dollars to the vehicle. At 8:25 am a deputy investigated a harassment complaint in the 1900 block of County Road P-14 (J Ave) in Greenbrier Township. At 11:09 am a deputy investigated a theft in the 500 block of N. 16th St in Grand Junction.

Thursday, Jan. 9: At 6:27 am a deputy investigated a car-deer accident on Highway 30 near Orchard Ave east of Jefferson. Tennent Waldrop, 32, of Madrid struck a deer with a 2019 Chevrolet Colorado causing an estimated $2,000 in damage to the vehicle. At 6:01 pm a deputy investigated a car-deer accident on County Road N-65 (D Ave) near 160th St in Cedar Township. Beth Shoemaker, 79, of Churdan struck a deer with a 2007 Buick Lucerne, causing an estimated $50 damage to the car.

Wednesday, Jan. 8: At 11:58 am a deputy investigated a theft in the 800 block of E. Main St in Grand Junction.

Tuesday, Jan. 7: At 1:44 am a deputy assisted the Boone County sheriff’s office with trying to locate a vehicle on Highway 30 near X Ave that did not pay for gas in Boone. At 3:02 pm a deputy assisted with cattle out on Q Ave near 140th St in Dawson Township.

Monday, Jan. 6: Routine activity reported.

Sunday, Jan. 5: At 9 am a deputy investigated an assault in Grand Junction. At 10:16 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of poaching on County Road N-65 (D Ave) near 177th St in Kendrick Township.

Saturday, Jan. 4: At 3:59 pm a deputy investigated a theft in Grand Junction. At 4:52 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of harassment in Grand Junction.

Friday, Jan. 3: At 9:23 am a deputy assisted with cattle out on County Road P-33 (S Ave) near 190th St in Junction Township. At 2:17 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of hog manure on the roadway on County Road P-46 (W Ave) near 250th St. At 3 pm a deputy investigated a theft in Rippey. At 4:58 pm a deputy was called to a car-deer accident on Highway 4 near 300th St in Franklin Township. An Iowa State trooper covered the accident.

Thursday, Jan. 2: Routine activity reported.

Wednesday, Jan. 1: At 10 am a deputy investigated a burglary in the 100 block of 185th St in Kendrick Township. At 10:05 pm a deputy arrested Michael Clement, 58, of Boone on a warrant for possession of a controlled substance*.

*In all cases when a defendant has been charged this is merely an accusation, and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
