A reminder about political signs

As the upcoming city/school election  approaches, Jefferson zoning officer Nick Sorensen reminds residents of the e zoning requirements for temporary signage.

Signs urging action on any matter on the ballot of a primary, general or special election shall not exceed 32 square feet and shall not be placed in the city right of way.

For those who don’t  know where the city right of way is, a good rule of thumb is to place the sign on the house side of the sidewalk, not the street side. If a property does not have a sidewalk and the property lines are unknown, utility poles for electric and telephone are placed in the city right of way along with fire hydrants. These are good indicators of where the signs should not be. If there are no utility poles or fire hydrants, the Greene County assessor’s webpage, http://greene.iowaassessors.com/, can be utilized to locate property lines.
