The Jefferson water department worked through the night repairing a broken water main in the northeast residential area of the city. Some residents are in a boil advisory Saturday morning.
According to public works director Dave Morlan, water superintendent Tom Schilling learned at 3:40 Friday afternoon of a water main break on N. Cedar St just north of Perry St. A city crew responded immediately.
When they dug up the 10-inch water main they found an 8-foot split along the bottom of the main. The city requested assistance from Clouser Plumbing of Ames.
Together they installed a 10-inch valve and replaced a 10-foot section was the main. The city crew remained on scene until 4:45 Saturday morning.
A boil advisory is in place for three houses north of the railroad tracks on Cedar St and the entire Central mobile home court due to the loss of water pressure. Houses involved have boil advisory notices on their front doors.
Initial water samples have been collected. follow up samples will collected 16 hours later and then sent to a laboratory for testing.
