The Scranton Commemorative Cookbook celebrating the heritage of the community from 1869-2019 was a huge success. In fact, all of the cookbooks have been sold, well before the upcoming Sesquicentennial celebration on June 29.

This cookbook was the result of five community women exploring the idea of creating a cookbook to compliment the 2019 sesquicentennial, and 2020 all-School reunion. They decided to replicate the idea of a cookbook for the Scranton Centennial in 1969 that had been a fun and successful project.

Members of the committee are Amy Baker, Cindy Boyd, Janet Christian, Linda Hoyt and Ellie Umbaugh.

The 2019 cookbook features black and white photos with tidbits of history of early Scranton gleaned from The Scranton Journal’s “A Glance Into the Past.”

Recipes were solicited from present and former community residents and their families by word of mouth, social media, newspapers articles and ads in The Scranton Journal, announcements on the Scranton cable station and in church bulletins, plus posters. Local business placed collection boxes, and an e-mail account was established: ScrantonRec ipes2018@gmail.com

The response was tremendous, compiling a cookbook of more than 280 pages of recipes, with contributor’s names and many in memory of relatives and former residents. A few had interesting personal comments.

There were recipes from four generations – Kepple, Waldo, Knudsen, and Calvert; several three generations; the Scranton School lunch room and one from Thede’s Ice Cream Parlor.

The committee members as well as Marchant Memorial Library and Peoples Bank sold cookbooks for the non-profit organization. Twenty-seven were mailed.

This cookbook, printed by Jumbo Jacks in Audubon, began sales December 10, 2018, and were sold out of the 335 copies by Jan. 20, 2019. All profits will be distributed to local organizations in varying amounts.

Demand will determine if there will be a second printing.

If you have NOT purchased a cookbook and are interested in obtaining one, contact one of the committee members or send an email to ScrantonRecipes2018@gmail.com .
