Greene County Schools are partnering with the Iowa Department of Transportation to offer the “Skip the Trip” program. “Skip the Trip” allows students to take the driver knowledge (written) test at Greene County Middle School or Greene County High School.
The knowledge test is required to obtain a driver’s instruction permit. The intent of the program is to reduce multiple trips to driver service centers if a student does not pass on the first try.
To be eligible to take the remote knowledge test, a student must be age 14 or older and not currently hold an Iowa instruction permit. The remote testing sites are at the middle school library (administered by Rona Challen) and at the high school computer lab (administered by Charlie Hane). Test administrators are approved school/agency officials.
Students may take the test at school during a study hall or free period. Test results will be emailed to the student and retained in the Iowa DOT’s customer records.
Once a student has successfully completed the test, he/she will receive a test receipt email.
Students will still need to go into a driver’s license service center (in Greene County, the treasurer’s office at the courthouse) with a parent or legal guardian to be issued an instruction permit. A copy of that email needs to be brought to the driver’s license service center along with proof of identity documentation (listed below).
Required identity documentation:
• Proof of age and identity (U.S. birth certificate, U.S. Passport, or proof of lawful status documentation)
• Proof of Iowa residency (Two documents showing the student’s address)
• Proof of your social security number (Social Security card)
• Parental consent form, if you are under 18 and your parent is unable to come with you to the service center (not required if parent or legal guardian is present)
Students should study the Iowa Driver’s Manual and take the online practice test. Both are available at https://iowadot.gov/mvd/driverslicense/manuals-and-practice-tests.
