Marianne Carlson of Jefferson won first place and a $75 cash award in the Whole Grain Breads with Red Star Platinum Yeast competition at the Iowa State Fair Aug. 16.
Entries were judged on shape, crust, texture and flavor.
Seventy-two different classes of cookies were judged in the Midwest Living competition Aug. 14-15 at the fair. Carlson placed second in molded or pressed – peanut butter, second in meringue drop, and second in oatmeal (other than named).

Across the fairgrounds, Ryan Bills of Scranton placed first in the morning round in the Mutton Bustin’ competition Aug. 17 in the Poneer Livestock Pavilion. Ryan competed in the ages 6-8 bracket.
