Area residents traveling between Grand Junction and Perry will want to give themselves extra time to get to their destination.
The Iowa Department of Transportation hopes to start an asphalt overlay project on Highway 144 between the two towns yet this week. The start date has already been delayed two weeks due to rainy weather.
Utility work will be done first, and then the road surface will be milled down and a 4-inch asphalt overlay will be laid. The overlay will be done in sections and the road will remain open for one lane of traffic while the section is being done. Motorists should watch for pilot cars and be prepared to stop for flaggers.
The project is expected to take eight weeks, depending on weather. Cost of the project is $5.9 million.
The DOT also plans to resurface Highway 4 (Elm St) in Jefferson from Lincoln Way north to Highway 30. That project is slated to begin July 30.
