The Greene County Ram varsity basketball team traveled to the Ronald McDonald House in Iowa City last weekend, Feb. 17-18, to complete a service project started during the basketball season.
The team planned and prepared dinner Saturday evening for families staying at the Ronald McDonald House, which provides support, meals, and comfortable accommodations to families with a child age 21 or younger undergoing treatment at an Iowa City hospital or clinic.
The Rams prepared spaghetti with garlic bread, a lettuce salad, mixed fruit, and chocolate chip cookie bars. After they prepared the meal, the girls were given a tour of the Ronald McDonald House. During the tour, someone asked what is the most pressing need at the house – the answer, meal prep! Head varsity coach Dean Lyons said, “It was rewarding for the team to have provided exactly what was needed most!”
On Sunday the team presented a check to the University of Iowa Children’s Hospital in the amount of $1,003.12. The check was the proceeds of various fundraisers held throughout the season, including a chuck-a-duck, a bake sale, and the sale of Pink Out T-shirts. The ream was given a tour of the Children’s Hospital, including the sun room where Hawkeye football fans give the famous wave at the end of the first quarter to patients at the hospital.
The weekend ended with the team attending the Iowa women’s basketball gave vs Wisconsin, which by coincidence was Iowa’s Pink Out game for breast cancer awareness.
“It was an eye opening and humbling experience to see how much the Children’s Hospital and the Ronald McDonald House do for these families, and I am glad we were able to help out even in ways that may seem small, such as simply cooking a meal,” said Ram senior Regan Lamoureux.
