Sheriff’s report – January 2018

Following are excerpts of activities reported by the Greene County sheriff’s office:

Wednesday, Jan. 31: At 7:18 am a deputy was advised of a dog nuisance in Churdan. The call was transferred to the city of Churdan. At 3:22 pm a deputy investigated a suspicious person in 300 block of E. Main St in Rippey. At 4:15 pm deputy assisted juveniles in Rippey locating an owner of loose dog.

Tuesday, Jan. 30: At 11:45 am a deputy was advised of a dog at large in the 500 block of 11th St. S. in Grand Junction. This was transferred to the city of Grand Junction. At 925 pm a deputy investigated a suspicious vehicle in the 100 block of W. Percival St in Rippey.

Monday, Jan. 29: At 4:57 am a deputy assisted with a maintenance issue of a Union Pacific railroad crossing arm on County Road P-14 (J Ave) south of 230th St in Jackson Township. At 6:29 pm deputies assisted the Jefferson PD in arresting a wanted male at a residence in Jefferson.

Sunday, Jan. 28: At 7:27 pm a deputy investigated a car vs deer accident on County Road N-65 (D Ave) and 140th St. Sheila Ray Toms, 43, of Lytton was northbound on N-65 when a deer struck the driver’s side of her 2005 GMC Denali. Damage to the vehicle was estimated at $600. At 9:21 pm a deputy assisted the Webster County sheriff’s office with locating a possible stolen vehicle in Greene County.

Saturday, Jan. 27: At 2:49 pm a deputy responded to 100 block of N. Chestnut St in Jefferson for a possible wanted person. Nathaniel Aldrich, 20, was arrested and transported to the jail. He was booked into the jail for violation of parole.* At 6:34 pm a deputy responded to the 100 block of Vine St in Cooper for a possible missing person report. At 11:15 pm a deputy responded to the 2200 block of Highway 25 in rural Greene County to investigate a reported underage party. Multiple juveniles and minors were removed from the property. Twenty-eight minors were cited for possession of alcohol by person 18/19/20 years of age – first offense. Eight juveniles were charged with the same violation and released to their parents.

Friday, Jan. 26: At 10:45 pm a deputy responded to a suspicious vehicle in the 700 block of Harding St in Churdan.

Thursday, Jan. 25: At 4:18 pm a deputy responded to a dog call in Grand Junction. At 4:35 pm a deputy investigated a careless driving complaint in Scranton.

Wednesday, Jan. 24: At 2:22 pm a deputy investigated an accident on Highway 30 near Q Ave east of Jefferson. Cole Palmer, 28, of Norfolk, NE, was driving his 2009 GMC Sierra pick up with a flatbed trailer attached. Zachary Modlin, 29, of Dawson was westbound on Highway 30 in a 2002 Kenworth tractor and attached trailer. Palmer misjudged his left turn and the flatbed trailer was struck by the tractor. Palmer was cited for failure to yield upon a left turn. Damage to Palmer’s trailer was approximately $500. Damage to Modlin’s tractor was approximately $10,000 to the front end of the tractor and the driver’s side front tire. Paul & Wayne’s Towing from Carroll assisted with moving the tractor.

Tuesday, Jan. 23: At 7:29 pm a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD with a subject eluding an officer in Jefferson.

Monday, Jan. 22: At 12:41 pm a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD with trying to locate a vehicle involved in a hit and run in Jefferson.

Sunday, Jan. 21: At 4:04 pm a deputy investigated a dog running at large in Scranton. At 4:05 pm a deputy investigated an attempted burglary in the 800 block of Hill St in Churdan.

Saturday, Jan. 20: At 1:38 am a deputy investigated an anhydrous leak on Highway 141 near 150th St. At 2:59 pm a deputy investigated a theft in the 1000 block of E. Sandoe St in Grand Junction. At 10:40 pm a deputy located a stolen vehicle in the 800 block of E. Hager St in Grand Junction.

Friday, Jan. 19: At 8:28 am a deputy investigated a theft in the 300 block of Madison St in Scranton. At 2:26 pm Joseph Allen Thomas, 39, of Dawson was booked into the jail for a sex offender registration violation*. At 3:33 pm a deputy investigated a vicious dog complaint in the 700 block of Grant St in .

Thursday, Jan. 18: At 9:27 pm a deputy assisted the Tri-County Drug Task Force with trying to locate a subject.

Wednesday, Jan. 17: At 7:47 am a deputy assisted with two dogs that reported lost and were found in Dana. At 11:24 am a deputy investigated a phone scam in the 400 block of 18th St in Grand Junction.

Monday, Jan. 15: Routine activity reported.

Sunday, Jan. 14: At 8:11 pm a deputy investigated an abandoned vehicle on Highway 30 near G Ave east of Scranton. At 8:34 pm a deputy investigated an abandoned vehicle on Highway 30 near Mulberry St on the east edge of Jefferson. At 10:29 pm a deputy, and the Rippey and Grand Junction fire departments responded to a structure fire in the 100 block of Lovejoy St in Rippey. There was smoke damage and one room was damaged from the fire. No cause was determined for the fire.

Saturday, Jan. 13: At 1:17 pm a deputy assisted the Hamilton County sheriff’s office with trying to locate a person near Grand Junction. At 2:32 pm the sheriff assisted with a spill in the 1000 block of Jefferson St in Scranton. At 7:37 pm a deputy investigated a harassment complaint in the 800 block of E. Hager St in Grand Junction. At 10:20 pm a deputy investigated a harassment complaint in the 1000 block of Sandoe St in Grand Junction.

Friday, Jan. 12: At 6:13 am a deputy assisted a motorist who had slid into the ditch on Highway 4 near 260th St south of Jefferson. There was no damage to the car. At 7:02 am a deputy assisted a motorist who was stuck on ice on Highway 25 near Highway 30 at Scranton. At 8:30 am a deputy investigated an assault in the 600 block of Adrian St in Churdan.

Thursday, Jan. 11: At 7:57 am a deputy investigated a phone scam in the 600 block of 110th St in Adaza. At 12:31 pm a deputy investigated a burglary in the 700 block of Lincoln St in Scranton. At 8:41 pm a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD in responding to an assault that occurred in Jefferson. At 5:31 pm a deputy investigated a harassment complaint in the 100 block of O Ave in Dawson Township. At 5:46 pm a deputy investigated an assault in the 800 block of Fitzpatrick St in Churdan. At 8:40 pm a deputy investigated a domestic abuse assault in the 800 block of Hager St in Grand Junction. Roxanne Malone, 47, of Grand Junction was arrested for domestic abuse assault*.

Wednesday, Jan. 10: At 4:34 pm a deputy picked up two dogs that were running at large in the 100 block of 190th St in Kendrick Township. The dogs were taken to the animal facility. At 7:46 pm a deputy investigated a theft in the 300 block of 140th St in Cedar Township.

Tuesday, Jan. 9: At 6:39 am a deputy investigated a car-deer accident on Highway 30 west of County Road P-14 (J Ave). No report needed do to minimal damage. At 11:42 am deputies investigated an accident involving a tractor-trailer and passenger vehicle on Highway 30 at Hillcrest Ave east of Scranton. Charles Miller, 40, of Morrisonville, IN, was driving a 1999 Kenworth C900 tractor. Shelley VanZeldren, 63, of Scranton was driving a 2014 Chevrolet Impala. The vehicles were both eastbound, with Miller following VanZeldren. VanZeldren attempted to pass another vehicle in front her, but she didn’t see that Miller was already in the westbound lane to pass her. Miller pushed VanZeldren’s vehicle by driver’s side for approximately 100 feet she went into the north ditch. One of VanZeldren’s passengers was transported by Greene County EMS to Greene County Medical Center for evaluation. The Jefferson and Scranton fire departments were on the scene to assist. Damage to VanZeldren’s Impala was approximately $7,500 and the Kenworth tractor sustained approximately $2,000 in damages.

Sunday, Jan. 7: At 3:17 pm a deputy investigated a car deer accident on Highway 30 near Oakland Ave east of Jefferson. David Tipton, 56, of Jefferson struck a deer. Damage to his 2013 Nissan Altima was estimated at $4,500.  At 3:57 pm a deputy investigated a harassment complaint in the 1000 block of Sandoe St in Grand Junction. At 5:15 pm a deputy investigated  a criminal mischief complaint in the 800 block of Percival St in Grand Junction.

Saturday, Jan. 6: At 4:42 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of 4-wheelers on the roadway in the 1900 block of 305 St in Washington Township. At 8:14 pm a deputy investigated a harassment complaint in the 700 block of Division St in Grand Junction.

Friday, Jan. 5: At 7:02 am a deputy removed a dead deer from the roadway on Highway 30 near County Road P-14 (J Ave) west of Jefferson. At 2:57 pm a deputy investigated a criminal mischief complaint in the 1800 block of 232nd St in Junction Township. At 4 pm the sheriff and deputies executed a search warrant in the 3400 block of 390th St near Lohrville. Stolen property and a stolen trailer were located. At 4:56 pm a deputy investigated a two vehicle accident (location not provided). Janelle Brophy, 17, of Jefferson was driving a 1999 Buick LeSabre. As she attempted to turn her vehicle was struck by William Wright, 37, of Scranton, who was driving a 2014 Dodge Ram. Damage to Brophy’s vehicle exceeded value. Damage to Wright’s vehicle was estimated at $3,500.

Thursday, Jan. 4: At 4:22 am a deputy assisted a motorist on Highway 30 near County Road P-14 (J Ave) west of Jefferson. At 12:12 pm a deputy investigated an abuse complaint in the 800 block of 11th St in Grand Junction. At 6:21 pm a deputy assisted a motorist on County Road P-46 (X Ave) near 140th St in Paton Township. At 7:32 pm a deputy investigated a theft in the 1200 block of I Ave in Scranton Township.

Wednesday, Jan. 3: At 7:43 am a deputy located a water line break in the 1100 block of Lincoln St in Scranton. At 8:04 am a deputy investigated a single vehicle accident on Highway 4 near 110th St. The vehicle was located in Calhoun County. At 12 pm the sheriff investigated criminal mischief in the jail. Jesus Zuniga, 18, of Jefferson was charged and booked for criminal mischief- fifth degree.* At 1:20 pm a deputy investigated a theft in the 900 block of 11th St in Grand Junction. Christopher Christian, 37, of Scranton was located on the property and was supposed to have turned himself in to the jail at 9am to be taken to prison. The deputy arrested Christian and took him to the jail. At 1:39 pm a deputy investigated a trespass complaint at 13th and Main Sts in Grand Junction. At 3 pm a deputy investigated violation of a no contact order in the 900 block of 11th St in Grand Junction. At 9:30 pm a deputy investigated a car-deer accident on Highway 30 near Orchard Ave east of Jefferson. Laura Oldenburg, 30, of Rippey struck a deer with her 2005 Dodge Caravan. The passenger, Nola Tolle, 39, of Rippey suffered minor injuries and was transported by Greene County Emergency Medical Services to Greene County Medical Center. Damage to Oldenburg’s vehicle exceeded value.

Tuesday, Jan. 2: At 5:27 am a deputy investigated an abandoned vehicle on U Ave south of Rippey in Washington Township. At 7:10 am a deputy located a power line down in the ditch on 280th St near R Ave in Franklin Township. Eight Midland Power customers were without electricity until repair was completed. At 7:20 am a deputy investigated a theft at Jay and Butler Sts in Churdan. At 1:06 pm a deputy investigated a single vehicle rollover accident on 190th St and Eaton Ave in Kendrick Township. Teresa Picknell, 46, of Churdan lost control of her 2005 Ford Escape on the slick road and rolled several times in the ditch. Greene County EMS responded to the scene. Injuries were minor and did not require ambulance transport. Picknell was cited for failure to maintain control. Damage to her vehicle exceeded value. At 1:10 pm a deputy investigated a domestic assault in the 900 block of N. 11th St in Grand Junction. Jose Hernandez, 28, of Grand Junction was arrested for domestic abuse assault*. At 11:59 pm a deputy investigated a single vehicle accident on 300th St and Q Ave in Franklin Township. Kevin Johnson, 52, of Garner slid off of a T-intersection. His 2006 Ford F150 pickup truck was not damaged.

Monday, Jan. 1: At 1:55 am a deputy investigated an abandoned vehicle on County Road N-58 (A Ave) north of 165th St in Kendrick Township. At 8:06 am a deputy investigated an abandoned vehicle on N-58 near County Road E-63 (330th St) in Willow Township. At 3:16 pm the sheriff and a deputy responded to a garage fire in the 500 block of Jay St in Churdan. Churdan Fire responded and extinguished the fire. The fire was caused by a chimney fire.

*In all cases when a defendant has been charged, this is merely an accusation, and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
