The new equipment was scheduled to arrive early this week and plans are moving forward to erect and install the new playground equipment in the Scranton School Memorial Park this weekend. All types of volunteers are needed — young and old – to assist with this project on Friday and Saturday, July 28 and 29.

The new equipment was purchased with grant funds, including a $27,412 grant from the Greene County Community Foundation, and private donations. It will be located in the park just east of Scranton city hall and Community Center.

A variety of helpers are sought. People who can physically assemble and install the equipment are needed but so are folks who can bake cookies or bars, make sandwiches, provide refreshments, etc.

To assist, please contact city hall at 712-652-3888 or email cityhall@scrantoniowa.com.

The new name of the park, Scranton School Memorial Park, was selected through a contest held recently. The Scranton city council selected the name submitted by Ruth Naberhaus and Aaliyah Gehling as the winning entry.

The council split vote on the park name. The park committee picked four favorites: Sunrise Park, Lincoln Memorial Park, Eagle Street Community Park and Scranton Community Park. After reviewing the entries, the council tweaked the name, inserting the “school” into the name.
