The Greene County supervisors and the Jefferson City council both heard updates on the proposed new animal shelter this week. The supervisors on Monday gave a verbal commitment to pay $15,000 annually to the city of Jefferson for operating expenses. “as binding as our word,” board chair John Muir said, although there was no motion made.

Principal salary, teacher grievances, construction class and more The Greene County Schools board of education was in what board president David Ohrt called a “lose-lose” situation at its regular meeting July 19 when it considered increasing middle school principal Shawn Zanders’ salary based on two additional grades moving into the building.

The Jefferson city council at its July 25 meeting approved a $3,000 grant to the Lincoln Highway Association for a four-panel marker at the east entrance to the city on Lincoln Way. The interpretive marker is suggested in the plan for the east entryway recently written by Bolton & Menk. 

The driver’s license station at the Greene County treasurer’s office in the courthouse will be closed Thursday, Friday and Monday, July 27, 28, and 31. The office will be open for other business.

Above normal temperatures were accompanied by widely varying rainfall and some severe weather during the week ending July 23, according to the USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service. Statewide there were 5.4 days suitable for fieldwork. Activities for the week included hauling grain, applying herbicides and insecticides, cultivating, and haying.
