The proposed Greene County Schools bond issue would allow the district to take two vintage buildings out of use – the Intermediate School in Grand Junction, built in 1915, and the Middle School in Jefferson, built in 1921.
The all-volunteer Pay It Forward Committee hosted a series of informational meetings earlier this month about the proposal, with meetings at the vintage buildings including a tour so voters could judge for themselves the need for updated buildings.

The proposal includes closing both vintage buildings and creating a 5-12 school at the current high school location. A two-story, 24-classroom addition would serve high school students, and the current high school (built in 1966), would be renovated and four classrooms would be added to serve students in grades 5-8.
Shive-Hattery architect Mark Hattery told those who attended the meetings in Grand Junction and Jefferson that although vintage buildings are more and more difficult to use as schools, several have been repurposed for “non-public” use. The proposal does not include funds to demolish either building.
