Five game win streak for Ram softball team

The Greene County softball team built a five-game winning streak following two losses in their first two games. The Rams picked up victories over Ogden, Madrid, Martensdale-St Marys, Nevada and Gilbert. The early losses went to Gilbert and Collins-Maxwell-Baxter. CMB is ranked 10th in Class 3A of the IGHSAU poll.

The Rams improved to 6-2 overall and 3-2 in Heart of Iowa Activities Conference play as of June 3.

GC 21, Gilbert 1

Greene County avenged a 13-10 loss to Gilbert on May 24 with a 21-1 victory in Gilbert on Friday, June 3. The only two starters back from the team that finished third in the Class 3A State Tournament the past two seasons were gone on a senior class trip for the May 24 game.

The Rams led 10-0 after 4-1/2 innings, but the Tigers scored in the fifth to avoid losing by the 10-run rule. Greene County responded with 11 additional runs in the sixth for the final margin.

Samantha Hardaway had a triple and two singles and drove in three runs, while Sydney Koch doubled in two runs and had a sacrifice fly for another RBI. Megan Carey singled three times and collected two RBIs with Hannah Promes getting two singles and a pair of runs batted in. Carleigh Paup doubled and singled, while Megan Durbin had an RBI on a triple and added a base hit. Jenna Beyers was credited with two singles and one RBI. Kylie Roach and Kassi Lamoureux each had their first varsity hits and both drove in a run. Onica Delp did not have a hit, but drove in a run on a ground out.

Promes, a junior, allowed just five hits as she picked up the win. Promes did not walk a batter and she recorded five strikeouts. The only run was unearned.

GC 7, Nevada 1

The Rams traveled to Nevada on Wednesday, June 1. They defeated the Cubs 7-1

Pitcher Promes was home ill, but Samantha Hardaway tossed a three-hitter and the Greene County batters rapped 11 hits. Hardaway struck out four batters and walked three.

Offensively, Carleigh Paup had two doubles, a single, and one run batted in. Jenna Beyers had a double and two singles and a run batted in. Megan Carey singled twice and had one RBI, and Megan Durbin doubled, singled, and knocked in a run. Sydney Koch also had an RBI.

Greene County took a 3-0 lead into the third inning before the Cubs scored their only run of the game. The Rams added four runs in the last three innings to win 7-1.

GC 4, MSM 1

The Rams racked up their third win of the season with a victory over Martensdale-St Mary’s on May 28. The Blue Devils scored a run in the fourth inning. Greene County scored all four runs in the sixth for the 4-1 win.

The Rams managed only three hits in the game. Sydney Koch and Laurin Lyons were each responsible for an RBI. Koch drove in her run on a base hit. Singles were also stroked by Carleigh Paup and Jenna Beyers.

Hannah Promes took the win on the mound, throwing three strikeouts and three walks. She gave up just three hits. The Blue Devils only run was unearned.

GC 6, Madrid 4

Greene County hosted Madrid on May 28 in a non-conference battle. The Rams won 6-4.

GC scored a run in the first inning, three in the second and two in the fourth. The Tigers put a run on the board in the fifth and rallied in the seventh for three more runs before the Rams retired the side.

Samantha Hardaway was on the mound for the Rams. She recorded six strikeouts and two walks as she gave up four runs on three hits. All runs were unearned.

Hannah Promes drove in three runs on a double and two singles. RBI singles went to Carleigh Paup and Megan Carey. Jenna Beyers and Hardaway also stroked base hits. Megan Durbin was credited with the sixth RBI.

GC 10, Ogden 7

The Rams also played Ogden on May 28, coming up with a 10-7 victory. It was a tight game through four innings, with Ogden leading 7-5. But Greene County punched across five more runs in the fifth and sixth innings and held the Bulldogs in check for the win.

Hannah Promes picked up the pitching victory as she gave up seven runs on nine hits, throwing four bases on balls and one strikeout. Five runs were earned.

Seniors Carleigh Paup and Sydney Koch each cracked two doubles and a base hit with Paup driving in two runs and Koch, three. Jenna Beyers had two RBI singles; Megan Carey, three base hits and Megan Durbin, a single. Laurin Lyons recorded an RBI.

CMB 5, GC 4

In Heart of Iowa Conference action on May 27, Collins – Maxwell – Baxter topped the Rams 5-4 in Jefferson.

The score was even through four innings at 2-2. The Rams went up 3-2 in the fifth. CMB put up three runs in the top of the seventh but Greene County could only answer with one, losing 5-4.

The Rams tallied 11 hits but could not get runners around the bases. Sydney Koch had a hot bat, cracking a home run, double and single, driving in two runs. Jenna Beyers was responsible for a run batted in as she stroked two base hits. Carleigh Paup added a double and triple; Megan Carey, single; Hannah Promes, two base hits; Megan Durbin, a single.

Promes was the losing pitcher, throwing one strikeout and two walks. She gave up five runs on five hits with three earned runs.
