Tom Fiegen, Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate in the June 7 primary, will be in Jefferson Wednesday, May 25. The meet-and-greet event from 7 to 8 pm at Prairie Blue Creative Arts, 114 N. Wilson, will be an opportunity for community members to hear Fiegen’s views and his proposed solutions to issues that include food, agriculture, and the environment.
Everyone is welcome to attend. There is no cost. Light snacks, with an emphasis on local ingredients, will be served.
Fiegen grew up on a South Dakota farm. The challenges his family experienced in their efforts to save the family farm during the 1980s Farm Crisis led him to become a lawyer. Based in Cedar Rapids, he has spent his career defending family farmers ever since. He specializes in bankruptcy, commercial and agriculture law on behalf of small businesses, homeowners, and farmers.
In 2000, Fiegen ran for the Iowa State Senate, defeating 18-year incumbent Jack Rife. In 2002, Fiegen was named a “Friend of the Family Farmer” by the Iowa Farmers Union for his work on legislation to ban packer ownership of livestock and “Outstanding Legislator of 2002” by the Iowa Citizen Action Network for his efforts on behalf of injured workers.
