Two men were killed in a one vehicle crash on the Highway 30 overpass in Grand Junction Saturday morning.
The Iowa State Patrol has identified the victims as John Jacob Twombly, 36, of Des Moines and Alexander Joseph Sharer, 26, of Boone.
According to the ISP, Twombly was eastbound driving a 1989 Chevy Corvette at 6:30 am. As he navigated the curve on the east approach of the overpass he veered, crossed the westbound lane and went through a cable guard rail. He traveled down the steep embankment on the north side of the roadway. His vehicle struck a tree, causing severe damage to the car. Twombly and Sharer, a passenger, were declared dead at the scene.
The accident report notes that Twombly was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident. Sharer was wearing a seat belt.
Greene County sheriff Steve Haupert, two Greene County deputies, Greene County Emergency Medical Services, Grand Junction fire and rescue and the Iowa Department of Transportation responded along with the ISP.
According to Haupert, alcohol was found at the scene. He also noted that the accident was reported at 6:30 am, although it happened in the early hours of Saturday. The vehicle had fallen down the embankment and was not noticed until daylight.
The overpass was closed for about five hours after the crash.
