Tree Tracings

Tree Tracings~by Valerie Ogren for the Greene County Genealogical Society

Meeting notice: The Greene County Genealogical Society will meet Saturday, April 2, at 10 am in the basement meeting room of the Jefferson public library.  Guess what?!  You are all on the program!  It’s fun to have a “Time of Sharing” because we always learn from each other. Please be thinking of a family story, a challenging research discovery, or a “brick wall” you climbed and share with members. Guests are always welcome.  We won’t force you to share a story, but you certainly may.

The reference library will be open at 9 am if you would like to do some research before the meeting. The basement is handicapped accessible.

Reference library: It’s time for all you researchers to hit the road again. The reference library will be open again regular hours:  Saturday 9 am – noon and Wednesday, 1 – 4 pm.  Sometimes we fail to mention that we have much more than just Greene County material. The shelves are full of material from other counties, other states, other countries, “how-to” books, and one complete section of family histories with Greene County connections which have been donated. Some are small folders or booklets – some are 400 page hardbound books. If you have published a family history, we would love to add it to our collection.

Iowa Genealogical Society: The 2016 IGS spring conference will be April 9.  With a mouse-click and credit card sophisticated DNA tests for detecting relatedness and predicting ancestry are available directly to consumers at a relatively low cost. Dr. Bryant McAllister, professor of biology at University of Iowa, will lead the day-long conference on DNA.  Information is available at http://iowagenealogy.org/?page_id=5265  He will introduce the science underlying these tests and explore the products delivered by the companies that dominate the US marketplace (e.g., 23andMe, AncestryDNA, and Family Tree DNA).   The IGS German interest group will host Part 2 of ABC’s of German Research on Monday, April 4, at 7 pm.  Even if you missed Part 1, all are welcome to attend. In addition to the various interest groups, another “perk” of IGS membership is FREE access to Ancestry.com on their library computers.
